First Italian ETS encounter attracts World class entry of nitro drivers

First Italian ETS encounter attracts World class entry of nitro drivers

This weekend (January 20-22) the Euro Touring Series travels to all new territory as Italy plays host to the second round of the Yokomo backed 2011/12 Series with a massive 300 strong entry set to descend on the town of Scandiano in the North East of the country. A nation famed for its motoring passion and in rc racing for producing world class nitro drivers, the event has attracted one of the sport’s greatest legends Lamberto Collari who will be joined by other big names from the onroad nitro scene such as Dario Balestri, Walter Salemi and Andrea Pirani. A nine-time 1:8 Onroad World Champion, Collari has already shown his ability to quickly adapt to 1:10 electric touring cars having made the A-Main at the Italian Charity Race in December which attracted a quality field as the main factory teams used it as a warm-up event for the first ever Italian ETS encounter.

Racing a Yokomo chassis, Collari will be in good hands on his ETS debut having reigning Modified Champion Ronald Volker for a team-mate. The Team Yokomo lead driver got his title defence off to the perfect start at the season opener in Germany at the end of October when he took a dominant victory over his great rival Marc Rheinard and the driver who carries the unofficial title of being the World’s best touring car driver on carpet is sure to have plenty of top tips for Collari who is much more at home on asphalt tracks.

Having been victorious over Volker when they used the Italian Charity Race as preparation for this weekend, Tamiya Racing Factory’s Rheinard will be hoping he can take his first ETS carpet success since Poland two seasons ago. The World Champion lost his crown as Champion of what is now the World’s biggest championship for electric touring cars to Volker last year after the Team Yokomo driver dominated the first half of the season on carpet and Rheinard knows the key to retaking the title is denying his fellow German a victory indoors.

Having secured his first ETS podium finish at this seasons opening round, Kyosho’s Christopher Krapp will be aiming to build on that result this weekend but will have to see off tough opposition from rival factory drivers in the Ride Modified class. Two such drivers are Team Xray’s super fast Swede Alexander Hagberg who must now be due his big break and Team Associated’s Juho Levanen who looked very good at the Asian Touring Series pilot event at Yatabe in November where he finished runner-up to Volker.

In the Xray Pro Stock class Zdenko Kunák will be looking for a repeat of Round 1. In Germany we witnessed a very popular maiden victory for the Team Xray driver when the talented Slovak racer final got the job done holding off the Hot Bodies of former race winner Oliver Franke and the Schumacher of defending champion Martin Hofer.

Being a country steeped in Formula 1 history, the organisers of the ETS have chosen the Italian round to debut the new Formula class that will now join the Modified and Pro Stock Touring Cars classes as the third category on the race program at each of the remaining 5 rounds of the 2011/12 series. Replacing the Hobby class, Formula racing is enjoying growing interest around the world and the first race has had a very positive response with a healthy 45 entries registered for this weekend.

Round 2 of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series gets underway with practice on Friday and culminates with triple mains for all drivers on Sunday. All the action from Scandiano can be followed live throughout the weekend on RedRC.

Rheinard & Krapp complete podium at season opener

Modified Top 3

Marc Rheinard and Christopher Krapp complete the podium at the opening round of the 2011/12 Yokomo Euro Touring series after they finished 1-2 in the third A-Main at Mülheim-Kärlich watched on by overall winner Ronald Volker who after winning the first two legs of the final was able to sit out the final race of a very successful event.

Winning Team

With three drivers, Rheinard, Viktor Wilck and Alexander Hagberg, in contention for the overall runners up spot there was still plenty to play for in the third A-Main.  With Volker’s car absent on the grid it was Rheinard’s Tamiya that had a clear track ahead of him but on two occassions the World Champion came under pressure for the win he would ultimately take.  TRF team-mate Wilck closed the gap as the race entered in to the second half but the Swede was to roll on lap 16 loosing 4-seconds dropping him to fourth and fifth in the overall classification.  Looking like he now had a comfortable victory in the bag Rheinard was also to roll his TRF417X just four laps from home allowing Krapp’s Kyosho to close to within a second.  Holding off the 19-year-old Rheinard secured the win and second overall while the result ensured Krapp secured his first ever ETS podium finish.

Christopher Krapp

Having said after taking fourth in the opening leg that he felt a podium was possible today, Krapp was delighted with finishing third overall.  Really happy with his Orion powered TF6 he said he has made a lot of progress with his carpet set-up and the car was ‘super easy’ to drive. With round 2 of the series also on carpet he is looking forward to Italy in January when he hopes he can put in a similar performance and add to his strong championship point tally.

Having accidentally hit the back of Andy Moore’s Hot Bodies early in the race through the Xray chicane and loosing out to Krapp as he waited to allow the British driver back through, Hagberg was disappointed at missing out on the podium. Finishing equal on points with Krapp but having to settle for fourth overall, Xray’s top contender said it was a shame to miss out on the podium but he is hopeful he can make it at the next round as he said his new T3 2012 felt really good.

Pro Stock Top 3

While the winner of the first round of the new season in Modified was decided after the second A-Main in the Xray Pro-Stock class the battle went down to the third leg but there was to be a very popular first ETS win for the talented Slovak driver Zdenko Kunák.  Starting out the successful weekend by securing his first ever ETS TQ honour on Saturday the 18-year-old, who also made the Modified A-Main, won the opening leg but pulled up early in the second after a mistake put him out of contention.  Pressured throughout the final race by former winner Oliver Franke and reigning champion Martin Hofer he held on to take the win and the first international win for Xray’s new T3 2012.  A long time competitor in the ETS, today’s win put him in serious contention for the overall title of the series biggest class in which 166 drivers took part this weekend.

Attracting a record 292 entries the fifth season of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series has got off to a hugely successful start and judging by the large contigent of Italian drivers who made the trip to Muelheim-Kaerlich this weekend the ETS’ first ever visit to Italy in January is sure to produce another great weekend for the world’s biggest electric touring car championship.

Volker pulls off perfect start to ETS title defence

Ronald Völker

Team Yokomo’s lead driver Ronald Volker pulled off the perfect weekend to claim an early victory at the opening round of the 2011/12 Yokomo Euro Touring Series in Mülheim-Kärlich, Germany. Starting from pole, the German ace backed up his win of the first A-Main with an even more dominant performance in the second to secure the overall win.  Able to sit out the third and final Main of the day, Volker’s performance which saw him top the time sheets for every round of practice and qualifying has put pressure firmly on his rivals to find something before the fifth season of the ETS moves on to Italy in January for Round 2 of 6.

Although the winning margin of the second A-Main was smaller than race 1, Volker controlled the race from the start this time.  Pushing harder over the opening laps he said once Rheinard made a mistake on lap 8 of 24 he was able to run a controlled race.  Admitting to a lapse of concentration on the final lap that saw him get his BD5 WXi up on two wheels, he said he was delighted to kick off his title defence in the same way he got his successful 2010/11 campaign underway.  The winner of the opening three race last season, he said could not have expected a better weekend and although not sure what to expect at Round 2 as its is an all new event on the calendar he is really looking forward to moving onto the next round which is also on carpet.

Rheinard

Recovering from his roll Rheinard once again took a frustrating second behind his great rival.  The World Champion said in testing on carpet his Speed Passion Tamiya TRF417x has felt really good but in race conditions it is no match for Volker’s Yokomo.  Putting much of the champions domination down to Umino Yukijiro who has travelled from Japan to provide technical support, Rheinard said he hopes he can convince Tamiya to send chief designer Kiyo Suzuki to Italy so they can try halt Volker and Yokomo in their quest to defend the title they took away from Tamiya last season. Although Viktor Wilck set the fastest lap of the second A-Main, he too struggled to keep the car on four wheels dropping from second to sixth in the race.

Alexander Hagberg

After a tough first Main, Team Xray’s Alexander Hagberg enjoyed a good clean race to finish third.  The Swede said while he benefited from others mistakes his new T3 2012 felt fast and with Volker sitting out the third leg the race for second overall is still wide open.  Planning to run a harder front shock to reduce his steering he said he hopes he just gets a second chance at having a clean race.  Making it four different brands of cars in the top four Kyosho’s Christopher Krapp repeated his Leg 1 result to again finish fourth from sixth on the grid.

With his Hot Bodies working much better this time round, Andy Moore was looking good for second until he got out of shape first allowing Rheinard passed before getting swallowed up by the pack when he got hit later in the lap causing his body to tuck.  The British Champion lost 4 seconds as a result and in the end finished 9th.

Oliver Franke

In Pro Stock the overall winner of the season opener will go down to the final leg after Oliver Franke took a narrow win over champion Martin Hofer.  Top Qualifier & winner of the opening leg, Zdenko Kunák led the race until lap 7 when he ran over a dot and got out of shape to get swallowed up and hit a number of times by the pursuing pack.  Out of contention for a string finish, the Xray team driver pulled up.  The result means three drivers, Kunák, Franke and Hofer, have a chance taking overall victory with a win in the final leg.

Perfect start to campaign for Volker

Ronald Volker

Team Yokomo’s Ronald Volker has got his 2011/12 Yokomo Euro Touring Series campaign off to the best start possible by backing up his pace in practice with a TQ run in the opening round of qualifying in Germany tonight.  The defending champion took the first of the four scheduled qualifiers by 2/10th of a second from Tamiya’s Marc Rheinard with Viktor Wilck third.

Volker, who won the opening three rounds of last season’s ETS en-route to the title, said he made a slightly over cautious start to his Q1 run losing him some time early on to Rheinard.  Once settled into his rhythm the German said he was very comfortable with his LRP powered BD5 WXi and started to pushed harder and once aware of his 3/10th advantage over Rheinard said he focused on keeping the remainder of the run clean.

Top Mod heat

Rheinard, who pulled off an impressive save when his car got up on two wheels, said his TRF417x was easier to drive following a switch to a heavier shock oil after final practice. Despite setting the fastest lap the World Champion said he needs to find more steering.  TRF team-mate Wilck ran a gear diff in the front of his car which he said made for better handling in the second half of the run but he too was also suffering with the front end pushing, the Swede plans to switch back to a spool for Q2 tomorrow morning.

Christopher Krapp

‘Much better than last season on carpet’ was how Team Kyosho’s Christopher Krapp responded to his run to the fourth fastest time.  The German said he has never been good at the 3-consecutive-lap timing used in practice but felt going into qualifying that his Shin edition TF6 had the potential for a good time over 5-minutes.  Having changed diff oil and shock springs for the first qualifying run he said the car had a little understeer but he thinks a change of bodyshell should cure this and he is feeling good about the three remaining rounds of qualifying tomorrow.

Zdenko Kunak

For 18-year-old Zdenko Kunák it was a very successful first day in German as he TQ’d the first round of Pro Stock qualifying and set an impressive fifth fastest time in the competitive Ride Modified field.  The top Xray driver in Modified he said a small mistake cost him a potential top three time but he was very happy with fifth and he hopes he can continue his form tomorrow in both classes.  Xray team-mate Alexander Hagberg, who was second fastest in practice, was upset with himself for making what he called two stupid mistakes.  Very happy with his T3 2012 he said he pushed too hard resulting in the two rolls that dropped him to 8th fastest behind the two Hot Bodies of Dominik Fleischmann and Freddy Südhoff.

For reiging Pro Stock Champion Martin Hofer the day was not as successful as that of Volker. The Schumacher driver, who was complimentary of Kunák’s driving today, is struggling with traction roll on just one particular corner of the track and ended Q1 only 8th fastest.  Behind Kunák, Oliver Franke set the second fastest time with Awesomatix team driver Ivan Laptev third.
