Teams ready for battle in Hrotovice

Ronald Volker

The opening round of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series was all about one driver and one team with Ronald Volker dominating proceedings to give Team Yokomo their first ever win in the series. In the weeks since Kastellaun the opposition have been busy trying to ensure this is not repeated with Volker admitting himself he expects a much tougher challenge from Tamiya and Xray here. Having enjoyed his first nitro race after traveling to Hong Kong recently where he raced 200mm, the German said the wide open track here this year in the Czech Reublic is also going to make it a very close affair with no challenging corners in which to give any particular driver or car a distinct advantage over the opposition.  Last year the track here in Hrotovice was one of the most technical with lap times in the region of 18 second compared with the 12 seconds being run in early practice today.

Marc Rheinard TRF417

The big news for Round 2 is the arrival of Tamiya’s all new TRF417.  The car replaces the 416 which brought Tamiya two consecutive World titles and three Euro Touring Series titles with just three cars present here for their Tamiya Racing Factory squad.  Marc Rheinard and Viktor Wilck had their first taste of the new chassis at the Tamiya Fair event in Shizuoka, Japan, last week where they did some demo races before traveling to the Yatabe Arena for a full day of proper testing.  In addition to picking up their new hardware the pair also agreed new contracts that will see them each continue to race for Tamiya for a further two years.  The youngest and newest member of the team, Elliot Harper didn’t travel to Japan, his car been shipped to the UK where he spent the week building it.  Having his first run with the 417 in this morning’s practice the teenager said the car already feels really good.

Martin Hudy

Xray launched their new T3 ’11 at the opening round last month and while they finished 1-2 in Pro Stock they were less than happy with their performance in the premiere class with only Alexander Hagberg making the A-Main.  Not ones to sit around, the Slovak company gathered its team at its factory in Slovakia where Hagberg, Teemu Leino, Martin Hudy and Francesco Martini spent the last few days testing on their indoor carpet test track.  Hagberg who last week won the Nordic Championships said the test was very productive and the entire team are confident they have found the reason for their lack of pace and he is hopeful of a much better showing here in Hrotovice.

Andy Moore

Although they enjoyed 2 cars in the final at Kastellaun Hot Bodies factory driver Andy Moore was not one of them and the former World Champion has used the time between races to try and get the TCX chassis better suited to carpet.  Focusing on different shock set-up he said it transformed the car back home where he enjoyed a win in the second round of the competitive Ardent Raceway Winter series.  Much happier with the car he hopes the set-up will transfer to the different blue carpet that is being used here this weekend.  Freddy Sudhoff was the top Hot Bodies driver in Germany and he is hoping for a similar performance this weekend targeting a podium finish, having just missed out last time at Round 1.

Another who just missed out on a podium having ended up on the same points as Sudhoff and Wilck, who claimed the third spot, Juho Levanen is making his debut with the full production version of Team Associated’s new TC6.  The Finn, who spent Wednesday snowboarding before departing for Czech yesterday, said the car has a number of slightly different parts to the pre-production one he raced at Round 1 with the shocks being totally new.  Although there was no racing for him to try out the car he did conduct some testing which he said proved very productive.

Christopher Krapp

Making a welcome return to the series here is factory Kyosho driver Christopher Krapp.  Unable to attended Kastellaun due to work commitments the young German, who was one of the stars at the World Championships earlier this year, gets his campaign underway this weekend.  Having been busy racing electric off road for the last four weekends Krapp said he has had to use the morning to readjust his driving style but his TF-6 feels good thanks to some carpet testing he did last month back in Germany.

Steven Wiess

Elsewhere there are two interesting changes in terms of cars being used by Steven Wiess and Michal Bok.  Having struggled to get to terms with the BD5 Wiess has left the team and is running a privateer this weekend running a TOP Racing Photon.  The German said he will race a number of makes of cars and hopes after a difficult season he can get back on track for 2011.  Michal Bok who has run Tamiya in recent times moves to Yokomo after his company MIBO Sport became the distributor for the Japanese company here in the Czech Republic.

How-Jiang and Dominic Quek

One entry that is very worthy of a mention is that of father and son pairing of How-Jiang and Dominic Quek who have traveled all the way from Singapore to race in the ETS. How-Jiang said they have been following the ETS on Red RC and thought it looked like a really nice series to race in, so as a present to his son Dominic who only turned 8 on Wednesday they decided to take in the race here in Hrotovice as part of a European holiday. How-Jiang is in for a busy weekend as he will race himself in Pro-Stock while Dominic races in both the Xray Pro-Stock and the Speed Passion Hobby classes.

Today’s schedule is made up of four rounds of controlled practice followed by the first of five round of qualifying for all classes.

Rheinard takes runner-up spot in Kastellaun

Rheinard take runner-up spot in Kastellaun

With Ronald Volker having already secured the overall victory with wins in the opening two legs, and opting to sit out the third final, it was Marc Rheinard who became the only other driver to appear at the top of the Xenon Modified time sheets here this weekend in Kastellaun.  The defending ETS Champion took a rather easy win but only after he made contact the rear of early leader Freddy Sudhoff on lap 4, the body once again tucking under on the green Hot Bodies TCX.  Rheinard said afterwards that the incident was unfortunate and ‘shit for Freddy’ but reflecting on Volker’s domination of the event said his Tamiya team needs to find something before the next round in Czech Republic next month.  The 3-time World Champion believes the level of support provided by Yokomo here in Germany was key to Volker’s performance.

Rheinard take runner-up spot in Kastellaun

With Rheinard winning by over 2.5 seconds, the interest in the race was the battle for second which at one point was between four cars. In the end Hot Bodies driver Dominik Fleischmann resisted pressure from Team Associated’s Juho Levanen who in turn had to deal with challenges from Yannic Pruemper and Viktor Wilck.  A much improved Pruemper, the German teenager finally showed the kind of speed we expect from the former race winner, but a mistake in the chicane while trying a move on Levanen dropped him back and he eventually finished 6th.  Having traction rolled off the track on the opening lap Wilck worked his way back up the order but also failed to find a way passed the Finnish ace who crossed the line in third 15/100th ahead of the Swede. The result of the third leg would see Levanen, Wilck and Sudhoff all tie for the final podium place on 7 points but Wilck’s Leg 3 race time would see him take the 3rd overall.

Rheinard take runner-up spot in Kastellaun

In Pro-Stock Eric Dankel, having already secured the overall win, completed a perfect day with a clean sweep of victories from pole.  A rather chaotic race, the Xray driver managed to lap everyone up to second place which went to Martin Hofer which was good enough to secure the Yokomo driver the final step on the podium.  Finishing third, backing up his second place finish in Leg 2, 16-year-old Tim Wahl made it a successful 1-2 result for Xray’s new T3 ’11 as he finished runner-up overall.

A superb start to the 2010/11 ‘Yokomo Euro Touring Series’, with a record 262 entries registering championship points, the teams and drivers have six weeks to prepare for the next stage of the World’s biggest touring car championship.  Making a very successful debut on the ETS calendar last season, the series returns to the Czech Republic on November 26-28 when we will see if anyone can respond to the pace laid down by the on-form Volker.

Volker’s domination continues with victory in opening final

Volker's domination continues with victory in opening final

Ronald Volker has taken a convincing win in the opening leg of the Xenon Modified final here in Kastellaun this morning heading home old rival Marc Rheinard.  Starting from pole the Team Yokomo driver continued his domination of the event leading from start to finish but afterwards said the race was not as straight forward as it looked.  With his LRP powered BD5 working well at the start he was able to pull a gap on the pack but in the latter part of the race the car become very loose. ‘I had to drive very carefully in the last part of the race.  I knew Marc was fast but I could see he was taking a lot risks so I just tried to stay cool and focus on my driving to maintain the gap and it payed off as he made a few mistakes’.

Volker's domination continues with victory in opening final

Setting the fastest lap of the race Rheinard was happy with his Speed Passion powered Tamiya but not himself, ‘The car was working better now but I made too many small mistakes’.  Having started 3rd, the German got passed Freddy Sudhoff and looked to be making inroads on Volker but a number of mistakes canceled out his progress.  The World Champion will leave his TRF416 set-up the as is but will replace the rear arms as one has become a little sloppy.

The start of the race didn’t go as planned for ‘Fast Freddy’ Sudhoff, the Hot Bodies driver saying he had too much traction and in the opening part of the race it was a challenge to keep it on four wheels.  As the race progressed the handling improved allowing the German to recover and find a way passed factory Associated driver Juho Levanen for third.  Sudhoff, whose TCX is fitted with a self created chassis plate, said he will change his tyre prep for the next final and leave the set-up as is.  Levanen enjoyed a great start to the race going from 6th to 3rd.  Having a great battle with Sudhoff he said he eventually had to let the German go and settle for fourth as his TC6 lost pace after the 3 minute mark.

Last year’s winner Viktor Wilck who lined up fourth on the grid saw his chances end on the opening lap after Dominik Fleishmann made contact with the rear of his Tamiya causing the body to tuck. Despite being able to run a similar pace in terms of lap times to Volker and team-mate Rheinard he would only finished 9th.

Volker's domination continues with victory in opening final

In the Xray Pro-Stock final, Top Qualifier Eric Dankel took a very convincing victory to head home an Xray 1-2 with Tim Wahl finishing second.  The German said he was helped by the early battle for second which gave him the chance to make a break.  With Pro-Stock drivers permitted a new set of Xenon tyres for the finals, Dankel opted to change and was very happy with how the car worked on the fresh rubber.  Martin Hofer, who was expected to be his main challenge, also ran fresh tyres but his Yokomo didn’t respond as well causing his BD5 to be very edgy for the first part of the race.  The runner-up here last year, he said nerves also got the better of him saying he thought too much about the race rather than just getting on with driving.  With Hofer out of sorts it allowed 16-year-old Wahl to take second.  Starting from 4th on the grid the German was delighted by his performance and is hopeful of repeating it in the next race.

Defending champion Alexander Stocker, who has switched from his Hot Bodies to Hofer’s spare Yokomo chassis, set the fastest lap of the race but an early incident hampered his progress and he could only finished 6th. Encouraged by the handling of the BD5, the winner of this race on the last three occasions is confident of better thing in Legs 2 & 3.

Volker completes clean sweep in qualifying

Full event results are available on MyRCM. View our event image gallery here and Live Video stream here.

He topped practice yesterday and today he remained at the top of the time sheets TQ’ing all five round of qualifying here at the opening race of the 2010/11 ‘Yokomo Euro Touring Series’.  The German ace, who has been at the top of his game this season, topped the last of the 118 heats which were run over 14 hours in Kastellaun today with the fastest 5-minute run.

Volker completes clean sweep in qualifying

With Volker having already wrapped up pole for the Xenon Modified A-Main the big interest in the last qualifier was how the rest of the grid would fair out and it was Freddy Sudhoff who was to win that battle.  Setting the second fastest time, the result moves his Hot Bodies up the number 2 starting position on the grid ahead of ETS Champion Marc Rheinard who ended the day with the third fastest time.

Q5 saw a very determined Viktor Wilck set a new track record as he looked to move up the grid but his Tamiya flew off the track ending the Swede challenge and he drops to fourth in the starting order.  Starting behind him will be Dominik Fleischmann followed by Associated’s Juho Levanen.  Deserving of a bonus from Losi for his performance here among the world class factory line up of drivers, super fast French driver Lucas Urbain will start 7th with his Speed Passion power JRX-S a car that was designed a number of years ago.

Completing the grid for the main event tomorrow are Yokomo’s Yannic Prümper, TRF’s Elliot Harper and Team Xray’s Alexander Hagberg.  The unfortunate BQ honour falls to Junior European Indoor Champion Adrian Berntsen but the Norwegian faces some high class opposition in the B-Main from the likes of Martin Hudy, Teemu Leino, Andy Moore and European finalist Loic Jasmin.

Volker completes clean sweep in qualifying

After TQ’ing the final round of qualifying Eric Dankel will start tomorrow’s Pro-Stock A-Main from pole. Running his Xray T3’11, which is fitted with Spec-R gear diffs both front and rear, the German Indoor Champion claimed his fourth TQ run of the five rounds of qualifying.  Although he has the number one starting position for the three leg final the 19-year-old nitro champion is not taking anything for granted tomorrow saying its not going to be easy, as racing is totally different to qualifying.

Despite his worst run of qualifying Martin Hofer, the only other driver to TQ a round this weekend, will line up second on the grid and is confident he can take the challenge to Dankel, a driver he has plenty of experience competing against.  The runner-up here 12 months ago, the Yokomo driver will change to a harder front ant-roll bar on his BD5 and other than that feels the car is good enough for the victory. Behind him on the grid will be Dutch ETS winner Oliver Franke, second fastest in Q5.  Two drivers at the rear end of the grid who will be ones to watch are defending champion Alexander Stocker, who has never been beaten at this race, and Vice-Champion Daniel Wohlgemuth who start 8th and 9th respectively.

Volker is Top Qualifier in Kastellaun

Volker is Top Qualifier in Kastellaun

Ronald Volker has secured the overall TQ honours for the opening round of the 2010/11 Yokomo Euro Touring Series as he continued his domination of proceedings in the penultimate qualifier.  The European Champion recorded the fastest 5-minute run of the event putting pole position for tomorrow’s finals beyond reach of his rivals.  The German switched from a gear diff to a ball diff in the back of his Yokomo BD5 which improved stability through the sweeper but create understeer out of the hairpin but overall the car felt safer to drive.  A great start to the event for Yokomo who have made a big commitment to the ETS becoming this season’s title sponsor, Volker feels pole position is a big advantage on this track as overtaking is difficult.  With the pressure now off, Volker plans to use the fifth & final heat to test a different set-up ahead of the finals.

Volker is Top Qualifier in Kastellaun

Setting the fastest lap Sweden’s Viktor Wilck claimed second for the round, the Tamiya driver having set the early pace for the top heat.  Making it three different cars at the top of the time sheets Freddy Sudhoff got a clear run in to claim third.  A podium finisher here two years ago the German ran a self designed and produced chassis plate on his TCX.  A narrower chassis than the standard kit version, it made for a softer car which he said felt perfect for the track conditions.  Currently tied on points with Wilck, Sudhoff said he really wants to beat last year’s winner in the final qualifier which would allow him to line up third on the grid.

ETS Champion Marc Rheinard, who passed Sudhoff on track only to put his Tamiya on two wheels loosing both time and track position, finished fourth. Just missing out on his first 31 lap run by 8/10th Juho Levanen was next up just ahead of a much improved Yannic Prumper.  An ETS race winner the young German said raising the bodyshell on his Speedpassion powered Yokomo had made the car much easy to drive and combined with better driving he was able to record his best run, but he has his work cut out for him to try and make the A-Main as he currently sits 13th in the qualification ranking.

Volker is Top Qualifier in Kastellaun

Eric Dankel notched up another TQ run in the Xray Pro-Stock class with the fastest time of the event. Running the controlled speedo & 13.5T motor from Speedpassion, the Xray driver once again headed the Yokomo of Martin Hofer meaning the pair will battle it out in the final qualifier to see who gets pole for the finals.  Oliver Franke claimed another Top 3 time with his Hot Bodies ahead of Russia’s Ivan Laptev who finish 3rd overall in last season’s ETS standings.  Czech race winner Daniel Wohlgemuth enjoyed his best time, which was good enough for fifth and sees him tied on points for 10th position on the grid with another race winner Meik Niemann.  In the Speedpassion Hobby class Lucas Fischer claimed his first TQ run but having been fastest in the first three rounds Oliver Günther already had the pole secured.

Volker closes in on pole position

Volker closes in on pole position

Ronald Volker has made it three out of three in qualifying for the first round of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series taking another TQ run to close in on securing pole position for tomorrow’s finals.  The Team Yokomo driver felt track conditions had changed with traction levels increasing which made his LRP powered BD5 more difficult to drive. The German says they plan a number of changes to the set-up, which has so far remained unchanged, and try to put the overall TQ honours beyond the reach of his rivals in the penultimate qualifier.

Volker closes in on pole position

Setting the second fastest time and looking like a more serious threat to Volker, Marc Rheinard said he now felt things were starting to get better.  Switching to a fresh TRF416 chassis for Q3, the ETS Champion said it worked pretty well.  Fitted with a ball diff the more upbeat German will try a gear diff for the next outing.  Tamiya/Speedpassion team-mate Viktor Wilck also produced a more competitive heat finishing only 2/100ths adrift to set the third fastest time despite a roll.  The Top Qualifier and winner here last year, the Swede said his car seemed better after a diff rebuild and new belts and he plans to run it as it is for Q4.

Volker closes in on pole position

Driving a Hot Bodies Dominik Fleischmann continued his strong performance here in Kastellaun running the fourth fastest time followed by the third member of the Tamiya Racing Factory team Elliot Harper.  Harper, who was on the podium at both the World and European Championships earlier in the year, felt it was a lucky run as other drivers were fastest than him but hit problems.  With his car a handful to drive he is going to switch to the same set-up as Wilck for the penultimate round of heats.

Volker closes in on pole position

Fastest Xray was Martin Hudy, the Slovak racer posting his best round with the 6th fastest time.  Hudy was frustrated by traffic which cost him time but was pleased with the progress he had made with his new T3 ’11. Harder oil and lowering of the shock position had transformed the car from being very edgy to very smooth.  Freddy Sudhoff managed 7th but was on for stronger run until a big off cost him over 4 seconds. Teemu Leino recorded his first Top 10 run with 8th ahead Juho Levanen and Daniel Sober.

Volker closes in on pole position

Let down by his driving in Q2 Eric Dankel bounced back to top the third round of qualifying for the Xray Pro-Stock class.  The German who opened the event by setting the pace in the first of the five rounds of heats said his Xray started off good but became very loose in the final 2 minutes.  Despite this he set a new fastest time but to try cure the problem he will now try a heavier oil in the rear shocks.  Martin Hofer had the opposite problem.  Too much additive on the front tyres gave him too much front bite on his Yokomo BD5 for the early part of the race but by the end it was good again allowing him to set the fastest lap and recover to record the second quickest time.  Young Rene Klockner enjoyed another strong round, setting the third fastest time as the only other driver to complete 30 laps over the 5-minutes.  ETS race winners Oliver Franke and Meik Niemann finished 4th and 5th respectively.

Xenon Modified Top 10 – Q3

Another TQ run from Volker

Another TQ run from Volker

Ronald Volker has  backed up his opening TQ run with a new fastest time in the second round of qualifying here in Kastellaun. The Team Yokomo driver set the first and only 31 lap run saying the unchanged car felt better allowing him to increase his pace and again set the fastest lap. Really happy with the run despite having to deal with a lot of traffic, the European & German champion said the controlled Xenon tyres worked better on their second run and he now hopes he can maintain his distinct advantage for the remainder of qualifying.  Second fastest was defending Champion Marc Rheinard but the German is still unable to get his Tamiya to his liking.

Another TQ run from Volker

Having suffered problems with traffic in Q1 Lucas Urbain got a clear run and put in an impressive third fastest time with his Speed Passion powered Losi JRX-S.  The talented Frenchman increased the rear droop and said the car felt better.  Suffering grip roll on his warm-up lap Urbain said he drove too cautiously on the opening lap but other than that was pleased with the run.  The only change he plans for the next is more glue on the front tyres.

Another TQ run from Volker

Viktor Wilck was fourth fastest with his Tamiya ahead of the Xray pairing of Alexander Hagberg and Adrian Bernsten. Having struggled in the opening qualifier when Hagberg was the best of the new T3 ’11 drivers, the Slovak team made a big leap forward in pace.  Hagberg switched to lighter oil in the rear shocks which gave him much needed rear traction and the Swede now says he can concentrate on his driving as the car is now competitive.  Junior team-mate Bernsten also found more overall grip after a change of C-Hubs making the car much easier to drive.  The 17-year-old Norwegian will stick with the same set-up for Q3.

Third fastest in Q1 Dominik Fleischmann was 7th fastest blaming his driving for the fall in pace saying his Hot Bodies was again very good.  Fellow German Hot Bodies driver Freddy Sudhoff, who set the second fastest time in the first qualifier, failed to finish pulling up after two heavy crashes tweaked the car.  Martin Hudy, who did much of the development testing on the new Xray T3 ’11, managed an improved 8th fastest time with Associated’s Juho Levanen and Tamiya driver Steen Graversen completing the Top 10.

In the Xray Pro-Stock class Martin Hofer upped the pace from yesterday’s opening qualifier to TQ round 2.  The Yokomo driver put the performance down to his driving saying the car feels just as he wants it to and he plans to change nothing for Q3. After being off the pace in Q1 last season’s Dutch ETS winner Oliver Franke said a change of bodyshell had allowed him to take his Hot Bodies to the second fastest time.  Switching from Protoform’s LTC-R to the Mazda Speed 6 the 17-year-old German said the TCX was fast and very easy to drive and he too plans to leave as is for his next heat.

Third fastest was Rene Klockner.  Having made a mistake on the final lap yesterday in Q1 which cost him a decent time, the 16-year-old said his Tamiya was the same as yesterday only this time his driving didn’t let him down.  Feeling his corner exit speed is slower than his rivals he plan to make a few set-up changes.  Having TQ’d yesterday Eric Dankel was unable to repeat that performance finishing up fourth saying ‘Car was good but I wasn’t’, the German Indoor National Champion making a number of driver errors over the 5-minutes.

Volker opens qualifying with TQ run

Volker opens qualifying with TQ run

Qualifying for the Xenon Modified class got underway this morning with Ronald Volker taking the first TQ run here in Kastellaun, German.  The Yokomo ace ended the five minute run well clear of the opposition with Freddy Sudhoff just over 5 seconds adrift with the second fastest time.  Volker said it was definitely a good way to start the day but admitted his car was still difficult to drive and he was having to drive a very fine line which on this occasion was possible as he faced no pressure from other drivers during the heat.  Despite the car being loose the Indoor European Champion plans to stick with the current set-up for Q2.

‘Not expected but a perfect start’ was how Sudhoff described his opening qualifier.  The Hot Bodies driver said his LRP powered TCX was a little difficult to drive but the end result was it was fast. The German plans to run a thicker shock oil all round for Q2. Making it a very competitive start to the opening event of the ETS for Hot Bodies Dominik Fleischmann set the third fastest time.

Dominic Fleischmann

Pitting next to Sudhoff, Fleischmann is running the same set-up as his fellow German, the only difference between the two cars being that his car is fitted with a Spec-R gear diff.  A long time Hot Bodies driver Fleischmann said the car was pretty good and consistent driving was important as track conditions mean the car is on the edge of traction rolling all the time.  Planning to run the same set-up for his next heat he will continue to concentrate on his driving.

Fourth was the best defending Champion Marc Rheinard could manage, the Tamiya team leader making two mistakes. Leaving the track on one occasion, the 3 time World Champion described his TRF416 as OK but is struggling with it getting loose off throttle. His Tamiya/Speedpassion team-mate Viktor Wilck set the fastest lap for the opening round of qualifying but also had an off and had to settle for 6th behind Associated’s Juho Levanen who he was trying to pass when he had his off.

Levanen, who needed medical attention yesterday after getting superglue in his eyes, said his Reedy powered TC6 is working really well.  The Finn said he got his tyre prep wrong and he sauced the controlled Xenon tyres too early, something he will change for Q2.

French National Champion and European finalist Loic Jasmin took his Orion powered Tamiya to seventh ahead of Hot Bodies’ Andy Moore who suffered a broken diff during the run.  French Losi star driver Lucas Urbain was a frustrated ninth fastest after traffic cost him a possible Top 4 run.  Danish driver Steen Graversen completing the top 10 with Alexander Hagberg the fastest of the Xray team in 11th followed by team-mate Teemu Leino and Junior European Indoor Champion Adrian Berntsen.
