Rheinard & Stocker extend championship lead in Poland

Rheinard & Stocker extend championship lead in Poland

Marc Rheinard and Alexander Stocker came to Poland at the top of the Euro Touring Series standings and this evening they go away with an even greater advantage over their rivals after notching up their third win of the 2009/10 season at the Arena Ursynow.  Stocker wrapped up the Pro Stock win early, taking victory in the opening two legs of the A-Main but in Modified things went down to the wire with no less than half the grid still having the potential to claim the overall victory.

Rheinard & Stocker extend championship lead in Poland

Starting from pole, Rheinard was to be the class of the field in the closing race, quickly establishing a comfortable buffer but the German almost threw it away.  Three corners from the finish line he flipped his Speedpassion powered Tamiya, loosing 2.5 seconds, but luckily for the two time World Champion his lead was big enough that he could still take the win.  The big battle of the race was for second between last year’s winner Yannic Prumper and Leg 1 winner Viktor Wilck. Having struggled all weekend it was a case of too little too late from the German teenager.  Moving his shocks to a lower position the 16-year-old finally showed the the kind of pace we saw 12 months ago when he took his first international victory.  Starting fourth on the grid he found a way passed Steven Weiss and eventually got ahead of Wilck for second, lifting him to fourth overall.  Expected to really push Rheinard for the win, Wilck fitted a fresh rear diff to his TRF416 X for the final race but it was to slip costing him any chance of closing the standings deficit which has now grown to 5 points.

Fourth in the final leg, Team Yokomo’s Steven Weiss would take the final step on the podium thanks to his second place finishes in Leg 1 & 2.  His first ETS podium, the German said it was a very encouraging weekend and had been very beneficial for him in terms of getting to grips with the BD5.

Rheinard & Stocker extend championship lead in Poland

In Pro Stock while the weekend belonged to Alexander Stocker we witnessed some great driving from Zdenko Kunák.  Having pushed the German all the way in the opening leg, the Slovak teenager put in another great performance in the third leg with a very mature drive to take a well deserved second on the podium.  Making it two Xray’s in the Top 3 Oliver Franke also put in a fine performance with his second top three finish of the day in Leg 3 to secure the final step on the podium.  In the Hobby class Michal Orlowski upheld the honour of the Automobilklub Polski by cruising to victory, winning all three A-Mains from pole, and his talents were further recognised when he was presented with the Speed Passion ‘One to Watch Award’ by race director Scotty Ernst.

Round 4 of the Xenon Racing backed Euro Touring Series has been completed with the polish hosts OSM putting on a first class event.  The event also brings to a close the indoor part of the 2009/10 season with the championship returning to Heemstede in the Netherlands for the first outdoor round on May 21-23.

Rheinard on pole in Warsaw

Rheinard on pole in Warsaw

Marc Rheinard will start the fourth round of the Euro Touring Series from pole position ahead of his Tamiya Racing Factory team-mate Viktor Wilck.  Going into the final qualifier here in Warsaw tied on 310 points each, Wilck needed to TQ the round in a faster time than that set by the German in Q4 but it wasn’t to be.  The Swede could only manage the 5th fastest time while Rheinard was the only driver to record 19 laps for the round.

Steven Weiss

The star of the last round of heats was former European Championship Top Qualifier Steven Weiss.  Having signed with Team Yokomo for the 2010 season, the German was yesterday still learning the new chassis in terms of set-up but for the final two rounds of qualifying he found his way.  Running in the second fastest group, Weiss produced an 18 lap run in 5:00.193 to take second in the final qualifier backing up his fourth fastest time in the penultimate round.  With each driver’s best two of the five qualifiers to count Weiss jumps right into contention for a strong result this weekend, lining up 3rd on the grid.

Third fastest in the final round of qualifying and jumping from a place in the B final to seventh on the grid in the A was Martin Hudy.  A previous ETS podium finisher, the factory Xray driver has struggled since crashing out in the warm-up for his opening heat but looked far more confident in Q5 and hopefully can carry that through to tomorrow.  The sheer size and width of track here in the Arena Ursynow should give the Slovak driver a real chance of progressing through the field.  Swiss National Champion Sacha Lnenicka was another driver to benefit from a ‘best for last’ run as he ran the fourth fastest time bumping him up to ninth on the grid.

Zdenko Kunak

In Pro Stock, the last round of qualifying was the first time we didn’t see Alexander Stocker’s name at the top of the list.  Both he and team-mate Daniel Wohlgemuth had their cars shut down within seconds of one another, leaving Slovak talent Zdenko Kunak to TQ the round and secure second on the grid ahead of German’s Jan Gehrig who has really impressed here this weekend.  Gehrig is being run by Mod racer David Ehrbar, who is also running his girlfriend Anna Wysgol in the Hobby class, and tomorrow all three of them will line up on the grid for the A-Main of their respective classes.

In the Tamiya TT01 based Hobby Class it is emerging 8-year-old Polish talent and championship leader Michal Orlowski who will start on pole ahead of Dutch driver Eric Mulder.  Making his ETS debut Gerd Strenge of Durango fame will line up fourth on the gird.

Wilck maintains form in Q3

Viktor Wilck

Factory Tamiya driver Viktor Wilck has notch up his second TQ run here in Warsaw heading a quartet of Speedpassion powered TRF416 chassis’ at the top of the time sheets.  The Swede, who set a new fastest lap of 16.053 for the huge track, was on target for his quickest run of the day but pushed too hard rolling first on lap 14 and then again on lap 17 resulting in his 19 lap run being a second off his Q2 time.  The Swede said his car was really good and a 5:08 run is possible but he needs to be less aggressive with his driving to achieve this.

Team-mate Marc Rheinard tried a new prototype diff in the front of his car for the run.  The ETS championship leader said his car felt lazy and this was reflected in laps times with his best lap almost 2/10th off that of Wilck.  The German plans to run two of the diffs in his car for the penultimate qualifier to see how it reacts.

Having struggled yesterday in practice and in the opening two rounds of qualifying this morning, last year’s race winner Yannic Prümper seems to have finally found his way setting the third fastest time.  The Toni-Sport team driver said a fresh set of tyres had cured the traction roll problems but the car was now sliding around a little too much.  The European Junior Touring Car Champion hopes a second outing on the tyres will give him the balance in grip he needs.

Just missing out on a 19 lap run by 6/10th of a second, Michael Bok was very happy with his run saying his car was really easy to drive.  With the traction levels continuing to increase the Czech driver plans to change the offset on his Tamiya. Best of the Xray drivers was David Ehrbar who was fifth fastest with the similar T3 of Swiss National Champion Sacha Lnenicka who completed the Top 6.

Zdenko Kunak

In Pro Stock Alexander Stocker continued his domination of the 13.5T Speedpassion hand motor class.  Coming closest to the DHI Cup Champion was Zdenko Kunak, who 16.895 fastest lap from Q1 still stands, with Jan Gehrig making it three out of three as he again completed the Top 3 on the time sheets.  Czech ETS winner Daniel Wohlgemuth once again failed to complete the run when for the second time in succession the pulley came loose on the lay shaft of his Hot Bodies Cyclone.

Wilck tops Q2

Wilck tops Q2

Viktor Wilck has topped the second round of qualifying here in Warsaw, Poland at the fourth round of the 2009/2010 Xenon Racing backed Euro Touring Series.  The Tamiya Racing Factory driver produced a 19 lap run in 05:11.871 with his team-mate and Q1 pace setter Marc Rheinard second with a time of 5:14.184.  The Swede described the run as OK but feels there is potential to go faster after he drove on the safe side when Rheinard rolled his TRF416 X while on a potential TQ run.  Rheinard, who set a new fastest lap of 16.141 during the round, lost almost 2 seconds when he caught a dot on lap 5 and then had another moment on lap 14 which he believes was caused by a tyre coming unglued.

Lars Treder

A superb run by German teenager Lars Treder took him to the third fastest time for the round with a low 18 lap pace.  Driving a Tamiya, Treder is confident that with a shortly application time of additive he can break 19 laps next time out.  Another strong run, David Ehrbar was the fastest non Tamiya driver with his Xray stopping the clock in the fourth fastest time just ahead of Czech driver Michal Bok.

Team Xray driver Martin Hudy completed the Top 6 with a poor run by his standards. Having broken his T3 on the warm-up for Q1 the Slovak ace said he just drove too careful but now that he has some points on the board he can push again.

Jan Gehrig action

In Pro Stock Alexander Stocker again set the pace but he was pushed hard by by fellow Hot Bodies driver Tommy Bergfeldt who ended up just over a second behind. On lap times the two stars of the European Pro Stock scene were seperated by 13/1000 of second. Germany’s Jan Gehrig backed up his impressive Q1 effort to again complete the Top 3 with his Xray.

Practice completed, Championship leaders top reseed

Practice completed, Championship leaders top reseed

Euro Touring Series championship leader Marc Rheinard has ended practice for Round 4 in Poland at the top of the time sheets. Over the five practice runs the German recorded both the fastest individual lap time with a 16.233 and a Superpole time, average of his best three laps, of 16.352 around the huge track here in the Arena Ursynow.  Running a 4 turn Speed Passion motor in his Tamiya TRF416 X, the German said the car felt pretty good despite running a fresh set of the controlled Xenon tyres in the final, and fastest, practice session.

Behind Rheinard with a Superpole time of 16.415 is the other half of the Tamiya Racing Factory team Viktor Wilck.  The Swede was also happy with how his car is performing but looking over the individual lap times, in which his fastest lap is 15/100 off that of his team-mate, the Kastellaun winner was surprised by the gap saying ‘that’s too much’.

Fastest after three rounds of practice Zdenek Hamak has ended up third fastest continuing on from his impressive showing at his home race in the Czech Republic.  The Xray supported driver managed only two laps in the fourth practice after a problem with a front CVD pin on his T3, the lost track time forcing him to make a lot of set-up changes for the final practice.  The Czech driver said the changes made the car much smoother to drive and with a few very small changes, the car can be strong for the opening qualifier which takes place for the Hobby and Modified classes later this evening.

Sebastian Lein

Putting in a great final round of practice, privateer Tamiya driver Sebastian Lein managed the fourth fastest time just ahead of last year’s Polish victor Yannic Prumper.  With almost every other one of the 200 drivers racing here this weekend waiting for traction to increase, Prumper is struggling to keep his Tonisport car on four weeks due to grip roll.  The young German said the car was the best it has been all day but is puzzled as to why he is the only driver suffering with too much traction. Due to his poor pace in the earlier sessions Prumper ended the reseed, based on the average best two Superpole times, in 12th.  Completing the Top 6 in the reseed, David Ehrbar managed 5th from Xray’s Martin Hudy.

Tommy Bergfeldt

In Pro Stock practice ended with championship leader Alexander Stocker topping the reseed from Zdenko Kunák who actually recorded the fastest Superpole time with his Xray averaging 17.242 in the final session.  Top Danish Pro Stock racer Carsten Madsen ranked third ahead of Tommy Bergfeldt.  Bergfeldt, who is running a new colour scheme on his Redbull backed Hot Bodies, said he feels he has found a better line for the open track but is still playing with the gearing to get the best from his Advanced Electronics speedo.  Germany’s Jan Gehrig did a good job to be reseeded 5th ahead of ETS Round 3 winner Daniel Wohlgemuth.

Winner here last year, taking his first ever international win, Meik Niemann is enjoying being back racing saying the big track was making it easier for him.  The German who is now running a Hot Bodies Cyclone said he is having problems getting the right setting for on his LRP speedo but overall is happy with how practice has gone despite managing only 35th in the reseed.  The large Pro Stock entry will have to wait till the morning for their first of the five scheduled rounds of qualifying.

Czech star Hamak sets early pace in Poland

Warsaw Track

Practice for Round 4 of the Xenon Racing backed Euro Touring Series is underway here in Warsaw, Poland and all the talk in the pits is about the sheer size of the track.  After securing the biggest hall in the capital city, the host club OSM promised to create the biggest indoor track the sport has seen and race director Scotty Ernst thinks that that has easily been achieved.  The track which is 41 metres long and 28 metres in dept is getting mixed reviews from the drivers with some loving the high speeds while others say it lacks corners but the general consensus is that it will produce some very close racing in Sunday’s finals.  Brand new carpet for the event have meant low levels of grip for the opening three rounds of practice but with the huge entry a black line is developing fast.

Zdenek Hamak

So far it is the star of the Czech round Zdenek Hamak who is setting the pace based on the super pole timing which will be used later to reseed the drivers for qualifying.  Over three laps the Czech Xray driver managed an average of 16.966 with championship leader Marc Rheinard the nearest to him with a 17.074 average.  Hamak said that the wide open layout of the track is taking a bit of getting used to and while he has good pace over three laps the car is hard to drive and not very consistent.  The T3 currently has too much steering which is not good for this track but he is confident that he can easily dial that out for the fourth practice.

World Champion Rheinard, who is chasing his third consecutive ETS win here this weekend, described the track as not very technical but nice.  The German said his Tamiya is OK but it is hard to get a true indication of where he is at due to to low traction.  His Tamiya/Speedpassion team-mate Viktor Wilck, who has so far recorded the outright fastest lap time with a 16.685, also likes the track in particular the first corner at the end of the front straight where the cars are on maximum brake.  The Swede is currently fourth in the super pole ranking just behind Czech ace Michal Bok.

Ivan Laptev

One of the stars of the Pro Stock A-Main at the last round in the Czech Republic Ivan Laptev is running well so far in Modified with the fifth fastest pace.  Russia’s top international touring car driver, Laptev struggled in the opening two runs but changes for the third made his Tamiya fell really good until the diff broke.  Unfortunately in Stock he is struggling, currently lying only 9th fastest as he struggles with straight line speed.  Sacha Lnenicka, an A finalist on his ETS debut in Budapest currently holds the sixth fastest time in Modified.

Martin Hudy

Birthday boy Martin Hudy, who was presented with a Formula 1 shaped cake after the second practice to mark his 26th year, sits seventh.  The factory Xray driver said his T3 was working OK but it was hard to actually get a good feeling for what the car is doing cause the track is so open.  Making a welcomed return to the Euro Touring Series, new Team Yokomo signing Steven Weiss is currently 11th but the former European Championship Top Qualifier said he is waiting for the grip to come up and we should see him move closer to the pace in the remaining two rounds of practice.

Zdenko Kunak

In Pro Stock up and coming Slovak driver Zdenko Kunak had a good third practice to put his Xray T3 top of the time sheets ahead the three main protagonists of the European Pro stock scene, Alexander Stocker, Tommy Bergfeldt and Daniel Wohlgemuth.  Championship leader Stocker, together with his team-mate and Czech ETS winner Wohlegmuth, said they would like to see more corners in the track.  For super fast Swede Bergfeldt, who arrived here on Wednesday and enjoyed a day of sightseeing yesterday around Warsaw, he is still trying to find the right lines for the huge track.

Unfortunately defending Pro Stock champion Balint Raijki has been forced to miss the event after laser eye treatment during the week has left him in too much pain to make the trip.  Returning to racing after a couple of months absence former winner Meik Niemann is currently 39th fastest but once the German shakes off the cobwebs we should she him feature higher.  One interesting competitor here this weekend in the Hobby Class is Durango designer Gerd Strenge.

Rheinard ‘Czechs’ out in Leg 2 to win ETS Round 3

Rheinard 'Czechs' out in Leg 2 to win ETS Round 3

Marc Rheinard is the winner of the third round of the Xenon Racing backed Euro Touring Series, the current World Champion backing up his A-Main Leg 1 win by cruising to a 2 second winning margin over his Tamiya team-mate Viktor Wilck. The result means Rheinard leaves the Czech Republic with a 2 point advantage over the Swede who came to Hrotovice as the championship leader.

Viktor Wilck

Rheinard said once he had established a gap up front he just controlled the race.  Commenting on the weekend the German said it was one of the more difficult races for the team as they struggled with set-up but in the end they made progress and it was good practice for the up coming indoor European Championships in Finland.  Wilck was disappointed he wasn’t able to mount a challenge for the win in Leg 2 and take the race to the third leg.  The ETS Round 1 winner said his Tamiya was lacking steering after being late putting on the front additive and despite giving his all there was nothing he could do about his team-mates pace.

Repeating his Leg 1 third place finish Associated’s Juho Levanen said he felt he could pass Wilck before making a small mistake which dropped him back.  With the pace of the Top 3 so close the Finn said he couldn’t make back the lost time and had to settle for third once again.

The big battle of the race was for fourth position with Martin Hudy once again the man getting the most attention from his rivals.  Like in Leg 1 the Slovak driver stayed calm and kept his LRP powered Xray online to finish in front of fellow T3 driver Zdenek Hamak and former World Champion Andy Moore.  After piloting his airborne Hot Bodies down the straight on the opening lap the former World Champion finished ahead of fellow Brits Elliot Harper and Olly Jefferies.

Daniel Wohlgemuth

In Pro stock, Leg 2 wasn’t as action packed as the opening race with Daniel Wohlgemuth converting his TQ starting position into victory but once again the German had his moments rolling once as he came onto the straight.  Behind him it was defending Champion Balint Rajki took second making it a 1-2 finish for the Cyclone.  Afterwards the Hungarian summed up the race but saying, ‘that was much better’. Ivan Laptev again had a good run to bring his Tamiya home in third ahead of a very Carsten Madsen, the Dane recording the fastest lap of the race.  The overall winner of Round 3 for Pro Stock will be decided in the third leg with three drivers, Wohlgemuth, Leg 1 winner Dennis Fadtke and Rajki, in contention.

Rheinard on pole for Czech final

Marc Rheinard top qualifier

Marc Rheinard will start tomorrow’s A-Main on pole position after he TQ’d the final qualifier for the third Round of the ETS here in the Czech Republic.  The Tamiya Racing Factory driver put in the fastest 5 minute run of the weekend just missing out on breaking into the 17 laps with a time of 5:00.663.  The German claims his first Top Qualifier honours of the 2009/10 Series ahead of team-mate Viktor Wilck who set the fourth fastest time for the round.

The big star of the final round of qualifying was Czech driver Zdenek Hamak. Topping free practice yesterday ahead of some of the world’s best touring car drivers, the Xray driver went in the wrong direction with set-up this morning but reverting back to his practice settings for Q5 he showed he could run with the best. Fastest in his heat it was only the World Champion who was running in the top heat who could better his time.  The result will see Hamak start fifth on the grid, something he admits he is a little nervous about.

Also putting in an impressive final heat was Slovak teenager Zdenko Kunak who too was at the controls of Xray’s T3 chassis.  Setting the 3rd quickest run Kunak will start 7th on the grid one position higher than he achieved at Round 2 in Budapest.  Sandwiched between Hamak and Zdenko on the grid will be Xray’s factory driver Martin Hudy who failed to finish the last qualifier.

Juho Levanen

Juho Levanen was the only driver that could deny a Tamiya car from carrying the Number 1 plate in the final here in Hrotovice.  TQ’ing the penultimate qualifier, the Finn went all out in an attempt to put his Associated on the front of the grid but it didnt work.  Afterwards he said he had nothing to loose and took big risks to try and better Rheinard’s time but it didn’t pay off as he only managed sixth following a number of errors.

Andy Moore didn’t have a good final heat saying track conditions had changed from earlier causing his Cyclone TC to feel very loose.  With strong runs in Q4 & 5 the former World Champion will line up 4th on the grid and his best international showing for quite some time. This weekend has seen a marked improvement in Moore’s competitiveness and the Brit has a real chance of challenging for a podium here tomorrow.

Completing the grid for the triple A-Mains are Associated Team UK driver Olly Jefferies, TRF’s new signing Elliot Harper and Steen Graversen.  The Dane climbed onto the back of the grid at the expense of Czech Grand Prix winner David Ehrbar thanks to fifth fastest time in the final round of heats.

Modified top 10 qualifiers
1. Rheinard Marc (DE) – 310pts (Tamiya TRF416X/Speedpassion)
2. Wilck Viktor (SE) – 308pts (Tamiya TRF416X/Speedpassion)
3. Levanen Juho (FI) – 308pts (Associated TC5R/LRP)
4. Moore Andy (GB) – 305pts (Hot Bodies Cyclone/Team Orion)
5. Hamak Zdenek (CZ) – 303pts (Xray T3/LRP)
6. Hudy Martin (SK) – 303pts (Xray T3/LRP)
7. Kunák Zdenko (SK) – 301pts (Xray T3/LRP)

9. Harper Elliott (GB) – 299pts (Tamiya TRF416X/Speedpassion)
10.Graversen Steen (DK) – 296pts (Tamiya TRF416X/Team Orion)

Daniel Wohlgemuth

In Pro Stock Daniel Wohlgemuth wrapped up pole position by taking his fourth TQ run of the day.  The German was much happier with the handling of his Hot Bodies in the final qualifier having lowered his front shock positions. The German’s only challenger for the Top Qualifier’s spot was Alexander Stocker who switched to a Yokomo chassis in a effort to claim his third pole of the 2009/10 series.  Rolling the car at the first corner the switch didn’t pay off and the championship leader will start 2nd tomorrow.  Behind the two Hot Bodies drivers on the grid will be impressive local driver Jiri Mara.  Driving an Xray T3, the 17-year-old Mara hasn’t been outside the Top 4 on the time sheets all day and is in with a real chance of ensuring local representation on the podium come tomorrow evening.  Defending ETS Champion Balint Rajki will start fourth.
