TQ in Slovakia gives Coelho ETS title No.4

Bruno Coelho has taken the overall TQ at ETS Slovakia and with it his fourth consecutive Euro Touring Series title.  Only Yokomo’s Ronald Volker could mathematical end the Xray driver’s reign over the Championship but he needed to go into the Season #12 Finale A-Mains as the Top Qualifier.  With Coelho taking the first two qualifiers, Q3 was a decisive run for both drivers but again it was the final lap that would be Volker’s undoing as he again handed it Coelho.  While Coelho will aim to cap of his successful title campaign with his 5th consecutive win at the Hudy Arena, Volker will try to hold on to his 2nd place from Alexander Hagberg and Lucas Urbain who go into the fourth & final qualifier with the advantage of still having a new set of tyres.

Reacting to what is his 4th TQ of the Season, Coelho said, ‘for sure that was a like a final qualifier and the pressure was on but at the end everything was OK.  Not only did we get the overall TQ but also Championship.  I’m very happy for this’.  He continued, ‘our (himself & Ronald) pace is exactly the same and it has been all about small mistakes today.  One more time there was nothing between us at the end’.  Still focused on the job in hand for the weekend rather than celebrating his title win, the World Champion said, ‘I’m still not happy with the car so we will try something different for the final qualifier.  Even though we will be in used tyres we see can we learn anything from it for the finals’.

‘The same story as Q2, this time I blew it going into the last lap.  I went sideways and that basically was it’, was how Volker summed up the penultimate qualifier.  As in the previous round, the German led Coelho on pace on the second last lap on this time he dropped 3/10ths with the error.  Despite setting the fastest lap, he said, ‘losing all qualifiers to Bruno when we had the same tyre strategy means I need to make sure Alex and Lucas cant jump me on the grid’.  He concluded ‘the late timing of the last one should mean my used tyre disadvantage is less’.

Posting the third fastest time of Q3, Hagberg said, ‘I was too slow to fight for the TQ.  The first two were a little faster’.  The Swede continued, ‘I have new tyres for the last qualifier so I hope I can take advantage of that and TQ to get 2nd on the grid’.  Asked where he felt Coelho & Volker were getting their edge from, he replied, ‘my car is too lazy in the chicane.  I need to make t more reactive.  We will try to improve that for the last qualifier’.

Again managing the 4th fastest time, this time ahead of Loic Jasmin and Marco Kaufmann, Christopher Krapp said, ‘It was pretty the same story as before, I was just too slow’.  Having change the flex set-up on his Yokomo, he said, ‘it was a little better but not what I needed.  The car drive too easy but that’s not fast’.  Looking to give himself a fight chance of a podium, he said, ‘I will change the rear end of his car and run a different, lighter, ARS system for Q4’.

Also securing the TQ in Q3 with the perfect hat trick of fastest time was reigning Formula Champion Jan Ratheisky.  The Xray driver was over 2-second quicker than Infinity’s Jitse Miedema while title main rival David Ehrbar ended up with  P5 for the round.  In Pro Stock, Max Mächler became the classes third different driver top the times.  The Awesomatix team manager TQ’d the round from Frederik Mikkelsen and Kevin Nielsen, with Q2 pace setter Dominic Vogl out this one as Q1 winner Simon Lauter ended up outside the Top 10.

Volker loses Q2 to Coelho on final lap

Ronald Volker lost out on a TQ run in the second round of qualifying at the ETS Slovakia when Bruno Coelho made up just over a tenth of a second on the final lap to make two out of two by just 0.069 of a second.  Starting directly behind Coelho after the Xray driver took the opening qualifier, Volker went into the final lap looking like he had done enough with Coelho facing traffic but a slow lap from the Yokomo driver handed it to the reigning Champion.  A significant loss for Volker, who needs the overall TQ to go into the Mains here at the Hudy Arena with any chance of deny his rival yet another ETS title, the German must now ensure he plays the perfect tyre strategy for the final two qualifiers, Q4 set to be the rocket round due to expected cooler conditions.  Behind the two World Champions, Lucas Urbain set the third fastest time followed by Christopher Krapp, Elliott Harper and Marco Kaufmann.

Summing up his effort, Coelho said, ‘We changed the toe in.  We increased it to make the car more easy to drive but it was too easy to drive’.  The Portuguese ace, for whom this weekend is very much a ‘home race’,  continued, ‘I had no steering basically so I was forcing a lot to keep the same pace as Volker’.  Looking to Q3, he said, ‘we will go back with the toe in and try different stuff.  The next one should be cooler which is good.  Right now it is 55 degrees on track and the tyres are over 60 degrees which is way too much’.

‘I was super frustrated on discovering I lost out’, was Volker reaction to getting pipped at the end of the qualifier.  He continued, ‘after a few minutes after I was happy we can fight heads up and we pushed each other to our limits.  Hayato has done a great job with the car’.  With the intense peak heat of the day now abating, for Q3 he plans ‘only a minor change’ to the car set-up with his tyre strategy the main discussion he plans to have with his mechanic.  Volker needs to TQ the remaining two rounds and then it would come down to the fastest time which is widely expected to come in Q4 which is due to run after 19:00.

Reacting to his Q2 performance, Urbain said, ‘that was my best run so far.  The driver was good this time.  I had no mistakes.  It is the first run without mistakes so I feel it was the best I could have done’.  Set for his 4th A-Main start in a row, the French Awesomatix driver said, ‘for sure I will run used tyres for the next because the last round with the rocket round.  The Top 2 on the grid should be fixed so I am in the fight with Alex (Hagberg) for 3rd.  I’m pretty sure he ran used in Q2 so he has two sets left’.

Seventh fastest in the opening qualifier, Krapp said, ‘It was better than Q1 but I am still way off the pace.  I’m struggling with my driving and getting used to the track’.  The Yokomo driver added, ‘I tried Ronald’s set-up in practice this morning and it didn’t work for me so now I have to go another way’.  Asked what the issue was the German replied, ‘the steering is OK but the forward traction is not there.  It’s loose.  I’m not sure what to change but I need to make big changes.  Maybe I will change the flex set-up’.

In Pro Stock, Dominc Vogl found almost 2.5-second compared to his opening run to TQ the round ahead of Q1 winner Simon Lauter while Jan Ratheisky again completed the Top 3.  Formula was a repeat for Ratheisky, this time the Xray driver getting the TQ ahead of title rivals David Ehrbar and Lauter.  It was a similar story in Stock 17.5 with Dominik Ruf also making it two out of two with Cham Dassanayake his closest challenger on the timing screens.

Coelho takes Q1 on reverse Hudy layout

Bruno Coelho has taken the opening qualifier at the Season Finale of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series but the Xray driver had to work hard for it against title rival Ronald Volker.  With uncertain weather conditions for the next two days, mainly the high risk of thunderstorms, it was an earlier start than usual to qualifying with all four rounds scheduled to be run today (Friday).  Another change to format for the closing race of the season is the track layout, Race Director Scotty Ernst making the announcement at the start of yesterday’s  practice that the event would run in the clockwise direction.  While the direction change has been met with mixed views, Coelho got the best from his car in the extreme heat to go fastest from Volker by 3/10ths of a second with Alexander Hagberg completing the Top 3 ahead of Awesomatix pairing Lucas Urbain and Loic Jasmin.

Commenting on Q1, Coelho said, ‘It was a super tight qualifying with Volker, from the beginning I was fighting with him’.  Aiming for a fourth consecutive ETS title this weekend, he continued, ‘In the middle I had some small mistakes and then had to force to come back.  It is super hot and the car was loose in the rear.  The temperature will be the same the next one so we will try to make it a little easier to drive.  The asphalt is super hot so after 2-minutes you start to slide, the traction is gone’.  Asked how he found the reverse layout, the World Champion replied, ‘I don’t really like it.  It has no flow’.  He added that the decision to switch direction, ‘doesn’t really make sense.  Yes we test a lot here but we just had the Euros here so the others had got a set-up from that but now we are all start again from scratch’.

Volker said, ‘It was a good run but it is just so hot out there.  Everything is on the limit.  It is not easy to go round’.  The Yokomo driver, who is Coelho’s only remaining title challenger with a very outside shot of success continued, ‘I had the same gap to Bruno yesterday so we have a good pace and now we are just trying to manage the heat.  The tyres are on the limit we me need to try get the best balance out of the tyres.  It is easy to get loose in these conditions but tomorrow it will be a  different story for racing cause the weather will be cooler and cloudy’.  On the track change, the German said, ‘It is something new so I like it for that.  I have been here more than 10 times so it’s a welcomed change’.

Summing up his opening qualifier, Hagberg said, ‘I started at the back because I had problems in practice and this made it hard to pace myself and because I couldn’t see what the guys at the front were doing.  I also had traffic.’  Looking to Q2, the Swede said, ‘I need on the fine details now and need to work on tyre strategy’.  As for the track, the Xray driver said, ‘I found it hard to get used to because I was so used to the original layout.  I’m getting used to it now but it has less of a flow.  I still prefer the original layout’.

‘It went alright I guess’, was how Urbain summed up his first qualifying attempt.  He continued, ‘I led the first minute but made a mistake on grass like an idiot at the end of the straight.  Anyway I started 3rd and finished 4th so we need to figure out the reason for my drop off.  I am the only one using the Helcat body so maybe it’s that but maybe it’s my power settings or something in the set-up’.  Making his first return to the Hudy Arena after a long absence, on the reversed track layout the Frenchman said, ‘It was been 5-years since I last race here so I could tell what is better.  On this layout I really like the ride side of the track’.

On his P5 run, team-mate & fellow countryman Jasmin said, ‘It was not bad but I struggled for the first minute with my driving after that I drove pretty good.  My car was OK but we will change something for the heat’.  On the track he added, ‘I way more like this way.  It is more natural to drive and less risky for me’.

‘A good start, a consistent start, a safe start’, that was how Harper summed up his P6 in Q1.  The British Xray driver felt ‘the track changed a lot since practice so we need some more steering without making it loose in the rear.  We need to figure out something but overall I am pretty happy’.  Asked how he was adapting to the direction change of the track, he responded, ‘It is good to try something different.  It’s more interesting for everyone but the flow this way isn’t as good’.

In Pro Stock, newly crowned Champion Simon Lauter took the opening qualifier ahead of Awesomatix team-mate Olivier Bultynck with Jan Ratheisky third, each driver separated by 1-second.  Ratheisky was able to TQ the Formula class going fastest from fellow Xray driver Matej Dobnikar and Andreas Stiebler.  In Stock 17.5 Dominik Ruf TQ’d the first encounter from ETS Austria winner Luis Moreno.

Krapp secures first podium at Apeldoorn with A3 win

Christopher Krapp has secured his first podium of the current ETS season after taking the win in the concluding final of a hot weekend of racing at the beautiful Apeldoorn track in the Netherlands.  Having challenged Top Qualifier Bruno Coelho for a time in A2 but unable to find a way by the reigning Champion, allowing him to celebrate his third win of the season early, Krapp came good in A3.  Getting by second place starter Freddy Sudhoff early on as the Awesomatix driver struggled with a lack of traction, Krapp would pulled clear before coming under the attention of a very racy looking Alexander Hagberg in the closing stages.  Setting down almost identical lap times, 1/1000th separating them, Krapp kept control of the race crossing the line 3/10th in front of Hagberg with Ronald Volker only 2/10 off him.  The win with the P2 from the previous final would see the German equal his best ETS result with Yokomo with Sudhoff completing the podium.  Having come into the weekend as the Championship leader, unfortunately 5th overall behind Hagberg means Volker relinquishes that lead to Coelho with one round to go.

‘I’m really happy now finally’, was Krapp’s reaction after A3.  A former ETS race winner with Kyosho, he continued, ‘I had huge pressure from Hagberg.  I don’t know what he did but he was quick that one.  Anyway, 2nd is good and good for the team also.  I have to thank the whole team for trying to get the car better.  2nd was the best I could do today and I hope we can keep the performance now’.

With his car visibly struggling in A3, Sudhoff said, ‘It was like ice-skating.  I could already feel on the warm-up lap that I had no rear traction.  I have no idea why’.  Having started out the weekend as the benchmark, the German added, ‘On the first lap the rear end was loose in the sweeper and it got worse every lap.  Then I had a 360 and my race was done’.  With 3rd place overall not enough to keep him in the title chase he said, ‘I hope now I can fight with Ronald for second (in the Championship).  We found a few set-up things here that will work at the Hudy Arena too.  I hope I can be as quick there as I was in quali here.  I really like the track layout there’.

With only Formula and 40+ Masters going to A3 to decide the winner, it was former Champion David Ehrbar ended up on the top step of the Formula podium.  An exciting race would see Infinity’s Jitse Miedema take a popular A3 win after he forced an early pass on Top Qualifier Simon Lauter.  In the hunt for the overall win having taken A1, Lauter would drop down the field while A2 winner Ehrbar, after challenging for the lead, held off Jan Ratheisky for third to give him the overall win by a point.  With the same results Lauter would get the second on tie break from Miedema.  In 40+ Masters a repeat win in A3 secured A2 winner Andreas Weyhoven the overall.  Finishing third behind reigning champion Thomas Oehler, Toni Mateo claimed second wit the podium completed by Beni Stutz.  With Olivier Bultynck wrapping up an early overall win in A2, Frederik Mikkelsen took A3 ahead of Dominic Vogl and this is the order they would complete the podium.  Daniel Pöhlmann won A3 of 17.5 Stock to join overall winner Marwin Riedelbauch on the podium with the Top 3 line-up completed by Tobias Baumbach.

Coelho wins ETS Netherlands

Bruno Coelho has won ETS Netherlands for the second year in succession, the Xray driver taking maximum points at the Apeldoorn track to move a step closer to retaining his Modified title for the fourth season straight.  Securing the TQ, he claimed his third victory of the season with a win over Christopher Krapp in A2, the Yokomo driver looking for a time like he might force things to go to A3 after getting by Freddy Sudhoff in the opening laps.  At the end however Coelho, as in A1 last night, was able to maintain a save advantage at the front crossing the line 7/10th in front of Krapp with Sudhoff a further 1-second back, the Top 3 having quickly broke away from of the rest of the 11 car field with Yannic Prümper finishing a distant 4th.

Commenting on his second A-Main encounter Coelho said, ‘At the beginning I was a little afraid to make mistakes so I stayed away from the curbs.  Then Freddy had some kind of mistake which allowed Christopher to close on me but like yesterday I expected a drop off in the middle (of the race) and that’s what happened’.  Moving into the Championship lead with today’s win, he continued, ‘the points are what we came for and for sure this is good for the title.  I know have 3TQ and 3 Wins  and something like a 6th & 8th so its still open’.  While having the advantage of the season finale being at his ‘home’ track, the Hudy Arena, the World Champion said while he was ‘happy with result today’ he is ‘still not totally happy with the car’.  He explained, ‘we are still missing something to the Awesomatix guys.  We need to make our car faster.  We thought after the last ETS in Austria and the Euros that we were on a good way but here we see we are not so we still need to work a lot’.

Reacting to his A2 challenge, Krapp said, ‘I hope I made it interesting for a while at least.  To be honest my car was really game on that time.  Freddy was struggling so I go on his inside and passed him.  Then I was on Bruno and tried everything but just didn’t have enough. Congrats to him on the win’.  Asked were he was lacking compared to Coelho, the German explained, ‘he was having trouble at the end of the straight, his car was loose there but he was better then me on the right side which meant I couldn’t get close enough to make a move at the end of the straight’. Going into A3 with a chance of second, the German, who is still seeking his first podium of the season,  said, ‘ I will try to fight for second (overall) but Freddy had some problems that one so I’m sure he will be quick again in the next one.  I will race it out with him and make sure I don’t do any stupid stuff’.

‘Mission failed’, was Sudhoff’s reaction after A2.  One only three drivers to win this season after taking his first ETS career win in Madrid, the German continued, ‘the first few laps I was struggling for overall traction.  I took my tyre warmers off too early and then we had the driver presentation so they were too cold.  It was my own fault’. He added, ‘that’s how Krappy could pass me like he did out of the corner.  For the last one I need to work on tyre prep and then see what happens’.

In the other classes A2 also saw the Xray Pro Stock decided.  Having taken A1 from the TQ, new EFRA European Champion Olivier Bultynck again took charge of proceedings to secure his first overall win of the season with his Awesomatix.  In Scorpion Power Formula class former champion David Ehrbar took the win ahead of reigning Champion Jan Ratheisky after Top Qualifier Simon Lauter and Jitse Miedema came together in the middle of the race.  The Infinity 40+ Masters class was won by Andreas Weyhoven despite the German getting a stop go penalty for contact at the start with Top Qualifier and A1 winner Toni Mateo.  In the 17.5 Stock class there were tears of joy for Marwin Riedelbauch as he backed up his A1 win with another in A2 to take his biggest ever race win.
