World Champion returns as ETS makes first visit to Luxembourg

World Champion returns as ETS makes first visit to Luxembourg

In contrast to the tight boards style track of Round 4 held at the fahr(T)raum Museum in Mattsee, Austria, the Yokomo Euro Touring Series travels for the first time to Luxembourg this weekend (6-8th June) to what is rated by many drivers as one of the greatest outdoor tracks in Europe – Mini Circuit “Ville de Luxembourg”. The penultimate round of the championship, the event marks the return of former champion Jilles Groskamp, the reigning World Champion having some great memories of the track as it was where the Tamiya Racing Factory driver won his first major title back in 2009. Another significant name on the 240 plus entry list is that of r/c racing legend David Spashett who despite many years of being involved in the championship as a sponsor will make his first race outing. Amassing an impressive 4 World Championship titles and 13 European crowns, Spashett will go up against the biggest current day names of the sport including Groskamp having entered the Ride Modified class in which he will be driving an ARC R10.

While there will be much interest in how both Groskamp and Spashett get on, in terms of the overall championship the weekend is set to focus on Team Yokomo’s Ronald Volker who could secure his fourth consecutive ETS title come Sunday evening. Winner of Round 2 of the championship, only Xray’s Alexander Hagberg can deny the German ace from wrapping things up before the season finale at the Hudy Arena in Slovakia next month.

A two time champion of the ETS, winning the first two seasons, Groskamp returns the championship for the first time since 2012 when he made his last appearance during Season #5 at Apeldoorn where he was part of an all Tamiya podium. A staunch early supporter of the ETS concept and still the championship’s third most winning driver, last season was the first time the now Thailand based Dutch ace missed a complete season, but his return comes at a track he relishes. The venue of his 2009 European Championship title when he beat Marc Rheinard and Volker, the only two drivers who have more ETS race wins to their names, he will be hoping he can repeat that success again this weekend.

A season that has produced three winners from four races, Volker’s win at fahr(t)raum making him the first double winner, the large Mini Circuit “Ville de Luxembourg” should make for super close racing. Most famous for its Laguna Seca corkscrew style corner, it is the perfect stage for producing winner number 4 of Season #7. Yannic Prumper put in one of the drives of the season in A2 at Round 4 putting his Yokomo team-mate Volker under immense pressure. In A3 the 20-year-old then saw off a strong challenge from 3-time World Champion Rheinard. Both drivers are hungry for their first win of the season and having nothing to lose in terms of the championship can go all out to achieve it.

Rheinard was much improved in Austria, despite losing his way a little in qualifying, and this weekend he will again have the support of TRF418 designer Kiyo Suzuki and top Japanese racer/Tamiya employee Takayuki Kono. He should also benefit from Groskamp’s presence, his team-mate known for technical input. Serpent’s Marc Fischer, still in search of that first Modified win for both himself and his team, has shown he has the speed finishing fourth in Mattsee and the German will be one to watch. Although he didn’t have a good return to the series at Round 4, Freddy Sudhoff should be another to watch as Awesomatix continue to improve their car on asphalt.

Prumper & Rheinard complete podium at fahr(T)raum

sun_modpod2

Yannic Prumper made it a Yokomo 1-2 at the fourth round of the Euro Touring Series in Mattsee, Austria, the 20-year-old seeing off a strong challenge from Tamiya’s Marc Rheinard who completed the podium at the fahr(T)raum hosted event.  With Ronald Volker having wrapped up his 10th ETS win in A2, the closing race of the all new event on the ETS calendar was very much a two way battle for second overall. Having put his team-mate under immense pressure in A2, it was Prumper’s turn to face the pressure as 3-time World Champion Rheinard slipped by his TRF team-mate Viktor Wilck early on to make the German work for his win. Rheinard looked to have got by his former team-mate but with the next corner a left hander and the TRF418 on the outside, the two touched. With Rheinard’s car spinning 180 degrees following the contact it was enough to give Prumper a gap he would maintain to the finish.

‘It is way easier to apply the pressure than take it’, was Prumper’s reaction to the battle. Pleased to join Volker on the podium, the Yokomo duo having locked out the front of the grid in qualifying, he said the weekend’s result couldn’t be better. Commenting on Rheinard’s attempted pass, he said luckily he had ‘the stronger car’ adding after his rivals spin the rest of the race was pretty straight forward. A big fan of the Luxembourg track that will host the penultimate round of the championship in a months time, he said he is looking forward to going one better there, him keen to rack up his 3rd ETS win.

‘It was a good fight, I almost had him’ that was Rheinard’s summary of A3. The former champion, who is already out of the title chase this season after a poor Round 2 & 3, said even though he got down the inside of the Yokomo unfortunately the next corner was a left turn. After the spin, even though he only lost 3/10ths on Prumper, he said the gap was too much to make back up on such a track. Setting the fastest lap of the three A-Mains, Rheinard said the problem this weekend was their lack of pace in qualifying but he said having been able to match both Volker and Prumper today was very encouraging. With Kiyo Suzuki and top Japanese racer/Tamiya employee Takayuki Kono travelling from Japan to support  the team this weekend, he said the support was a big help and ‘for sure (they are) making progress with the car’.

With the Xray Pro-Stock Class winner having also been decided in A2, Jan Ratheisky taking his third win of the season, A3 was also about deciding the remaining podium positions. Despite winning, Jan Ratheisky still contested A3 taking the win over Xray team-mate Marek Cerny who would secure second overall. Another good run from 8th on the grid, Awesomatix’s Oliver Franke would finish the leg 3 a result that would see him complete the podium.

New in the pits

sun_teamc3

Following what seems to be one of the most stable markets in the industry, TeamC is showing new commitment to the touring class and was present here at the ETS with their new car called the TC10. Pretty quick in the hands of Siedl and Botzenhart who both made the Xray Pro-stock A-Main, the new platform seemed to be off to a competitive beginning.

sun_NIP3

Good news also came for Awesomatix owners, who will now be able to precisely measure their caster adjustments thanks to the smart tool that the guys at fun-brush.com designed and produced. Made to be used on both the front and rear hubs, the system uses a digital pitch gauge – sold together with the kit – to allow maximum precision on the fully adjustable Russian made chassis’ geometries.

sat_ameservo1

Andreas Myberg’s AME have debuted their new line of servoe with the new “z.z6” (the name recalling the nice speed of 0.06 seconds) that will be produced in two versions, one featuring a built-in mount which is suitable for Xrays, Yokomos as well as other brands of cars, while the second is a classic mount version.

Motor – MuchMore (handout)
ESC – MuchMore (handout)
Batteries – LRP 7500
Tires – Ride (handout)
Radio/Servo – Sanwa
Bodyshell – Blitz GSF

Remarks – Topping the final round of qualifying here in Mattsee in the Xray Pro-Stock class, the German ARC driver is running a slightly revised car, the latest new bits being a shorter steering rack that is meant to allow a better rotation and more consistent steering throughout the whole corner. It also has harder lower suspension arms and new ball-cups realized with a different plastic compound. In terms of setup, here he is using a softer shock configuration, anti-dive in the front and kick-up in the rear and shorter camber links to obtain a more reactive car in the tight track.

Volker celebrates 10th ETS win with Mattsee victory

sun_ronaldwinner

He said after A1 he expected a stronger challenge from his team-mate and that is exactly what he got in A2, but in the end Ronald Volker was able to hold off intense pressure from Yannic Prumper to claim the overall win at the Yokomo Euro Touring Series fourth round in Mattsee, Austria. The win marks the defending champion’s 10th ETS race leaving him just 1 off the championship’s most winning driver Marc Rheinard who completed the Top 3 for second of the day’s A-Mains. In terms of the championship today’s victory together with bonus point for TQ means now only Team Xray’s Alexander Hagberg, who is having a tough event at fahr(T)raum, can deny the Yokomo driver & his team their fourth consecutive Ride Modified title.

sun_volkerprumper2

‘I’m done, that race aged me’ said a very clearly relieved Volker after the display of world class racing put on by himself & Prumper.  As had predicted after A1, Volker said Prumper had the advantage of new tyres, which prior to today were more a distadvantage than used tyres, and their performances were reversed from the opening Main.  Complimenting Prumper on keeping the highly intense battle so clean adding it ‘was a good show for those watching’, the European Champion looked to have early control of the race until he tapped his LRP powered BD7 off the boards allowing Prumper’s MuchMore powered example to close right up.  ‘Working crazy hard’ to give the 20-year-old no room with only three potential passing spots on the track. With Prumper on fresher tyres Volker said this got more difficult as the race went on as his challenger had more steering and better forward traction. Delighted to take his winning tally to double digitals, him very keen to knock Rheinard from the top of the ETS winners table, the German said it had been ‘a great weekend’ thanking his sponsors Yokomo and LRP for their support and as always his race engineer Yukijiro Umino.

sun_yannic

‘I just couldn’t find a place to pass’, that was how Prumper summed up his impressive challenge. The former race winner said with fresh tyres his BD7 was much better although it wasn’t until around the 2-minute mark at which they really came good. Making a move on the last lap which saw the two make contact, sending his own car crashing into the boards, he said there was a small gap and he ‘had a go but it didn’t happen’. Set to start at the front of the grid in A3, Volker sitting out the closing race, Prumper said his main focus is on the win and Marc Rheinard, the Tamiya driver the only one who can potential deny him helping make it a Yokomo 1-2 on the overall podium. With Rheinard starting fourth, his former team-mate said once he makes no mistakes the win in A3 should be no problem.

sun_rheinard

Finally getting by his team-mate Viktor Wilck, when the No.3 Tamiya driver tapped the boards and broke a C-Hub, Rheinard said it was too late to be able to do anything about the leading Yokomos. Encouraged by his comparable pace to both Volker & Prumper, he said his Much More powered TRF418, which is running a number of World Championship development parts, was ‘good’.  Seeing off Marc Fischer, he admitted the Serpent driver had him under pressure for a time but he was able to break away from the challenge.  With 2nd overall up for grabs in A3, he said he will go for it but added he needs to be careful that he doesn’t on the other hand throw away the chance of only his second podium finish of the season.

sun_ratheisky

In the Xray Pro Stock class the overall win was also decided in A2 with Top Qualifier Jan Ratheisky seeing off a sterling challenge from Xray team-mate Marek Cerny. Cerny pushed the German hard over did with just over a minute to go hitting the boards and taking a corner off his car.  Starting 5th on the grid Team C driver Tobias Seidl  took second with another good run from Oliver Frank seeing him completing the A2 Top 3.  In Formula, Ratheisky became the first champion of Season #7 as he took A2 for the overall win to defend his title in the growing category.
