Groskamp wins opening final

Jilles Groskamp

Top Qualifier Jilles Groskamp has won the opening leg of the Xenon Modified A-Main at the fifth round of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series in Apeldoorn in a rather uneventful race.  The Dutch ace took an easy victory leading from start to finish to win from TRF team-mate Marc Rheinard and Yokomo’s Yannic Prumper.  As the race was reaching the midway distance things looked to be hotting up with Rheinard set to mount a challenge on the two time former ETS Champion but running high on the curb coming onto the straight his car got sideways catching the grass giving Groskamp the break he needed to cruise to the win.

Groskamp said he got lucky when Rheinard got on the grass but is confident that today’s hot conditions will suit his smooth driving and allow him to protect his tyres from over heating.  Very happy with his TRF417 and that his Orion motor can match Rheinard’s Speed Passion, something he was not able to do last year at the similarly large MACH track, he is confident he can repeat his 2009 Apeldoorn victory this afternoon.  Still seeking his first overall ETS win as Champion of the series, which has just one more event remaining after this weekend, Rheinard believes without his mistake he would have been able to take his team-mate and plans to stay off the curbs for the rest of the day.

Yannic Prumper

Despite holding off the close attentions of Team Kyosho’s Christopher Krapp to claim third, Prumper was not happy with his BD5 which he said did not work well on fresh rubber.  Having topped the third round of qualifying yesterday, the German teenager is confident that on used tyres he can be a lot more competive in the remaining two finals here in the Netherlands.

Having got the jump on his Yokomo team-mate Prumper, champion elect Ronald Volker looked on target to take a distant third until his car came to a halt on lap 15.  Caused by the end cover coming off his LRP motor, the German appeared more concerned about his lack of pace compared with Groskamp and Rheinard saying he needs to find something big for Leg 2. The other retirement of the race was Freddy Sudhoff who went out with a broken rear gear diff in his Hot Bodies TCX.

John Bruins

In the first of the Xray Pro Stock A-Mains John Bruins also took an easy win after a messy first lap by the rest of the 10 car field.  The Dutch Tamiya driver had a lucky start after which he was able to control the race but said with a clean start the second leg is going to be very different story.  The driver expected to mount the biggest challenge was Martin Hofer but after two incidents on the opening lap he pulled up his Schumacher early so as to save his new tyres.  Running the first final on used tyres, as Bruins did, last year’s Dutch ETS winner Oliver Franke took second from fourth on the grid.  Having finally found a set-up for his Hot Bodies that he likes and with a fresh set of tyres for the second leg he is confident he can pull off another good result. Starting 8th on the grid Xray driver Steffen Leinburger survived the first lap incidents to take 3rd holding off strong pressure from the Tamiya of Swiss driver Sandro Kuriger.

Groskamp is Top Qualifier at Apeldoorn

Groskamp is Top Qualifier at Apeldoorn

Former two time ETS champion Jilles Groskamp will start his first appearance in the 2010/11 Yokomo Euro Touring Series from pole position tomorrow in Apeldoorn.  The Tamiya driver tied on points with team-mate Marc Rheinard and Yokomo’s Yannic Prumper but having produced the fastest 5-minute time of qualifying when he topped Q1 yesterday, the Dutch ace was declared Top Qualifier.

Jilles Groskamp

In the fourth & final round of qualifying Groskamp looked well on target to claim his second TQ run of the event until he ran wide at the end of the straight on lap 9 causing his Orion powered TRF417 to spin out onto the grass under braking.  The incident cost him over 7-seconds allowing Prumper and the Top Qualifier of every other race this season Ronald Volker to battle for the fastest time.  In the end Volker topped the time sheets for the first time this weekend becoming only the third driver to record 20 laps which secures him fourth on the grid behind team-mate Prumper.

Groskamp admitted he was lucky that Volker denied Prumper the round but said despite his off he is really confident for tomorrow’s triple leg finals when he will be looking to repeat the result from 2-years-ago when he won this event.  Having switched back to a spool on his TRF417 for Q4 the former European Champion said the car was better and he believes he has the fastest car which he now just has to keep in the middle of the track.

Starting second on the grid Rheinard, who has still to win a race in a year that he is the reigning champion, failed to finish the last heat.  Suffering with a very loose car that kept spinning out he pulled up early.  Finding nothing wrong with the car he hopes it was just down to running used tyres.

Ronald Volker Stand

Volker who ran a set-up which he described as a combination of both Prumper’s and Cyril N’diaye was much happier with his LRP powered BD5.  More confident with the car in Q4 he is looking forward to tomorrow’s finals as is Prumper. 3-time French Champion N’diaye failed to finish the round after he broke a rear belt but still lines up behind his Yokomo team-mates in fifth and will be one to watch tomorrow.

Steen Graversen

In a desperate attempt to make the Top 10 and secure a place in the A-Main former ETS Top Qualifier Steen Graversen ran one of his fresh sets of allocated race tyres in Q4 and it paid off.  Taking his Russian designed Awesomatix to the third fastest time the Danish driver will start 8th on the grid between the Kyosho of Christopher Krapp and the Hot Bodies of Freddy Sudhoff.  Polish race winner Juho Levanen who ran in the second highest group of drivers had to sweat out the last qualifier of the day but thanks to his Q1 & 3 times just made it onto the back of the grid in 10th.

In Pro Stock John Bruins made it a TQ double for the Dutch and Tamiya as he topped Q4 from Daniel Wohlgemuth to secure pole ahead of standings leader Martin Hofer who had an off in Q4.  Super pleased with his day, 27-year-old Bruins said his TRF417 felt really good and he is looking forward to tomorrow.  A winner of a club race here two weeks ago he said the racing should be really interesting.  Hofer was not too worried about starting second saying he won from that spot at the last round to notch up his second consecutive ETS win.

ETS racers dig deep for Japan

ETS racers dig deep for Japan

Racers competing in the fifth round of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series at the beautiful Apeldoorn track in The Netherlands this weekend dug deep into their pockets this afternoon with an auction in aid of the Red Cross’ Japan Fund raising €1,735 ($2.489).  Organised by regular ETS competitor Phil Hoggart, the auction was conducted by legendary race announcer Scotty Ernst providing plenty of entertainment for everyone during a rain shower that interrupted the final round of qualifying. The highest bid made during the auction was for a body shell donated by current World and ETS Champion Marc Rheinard which helped raise €100.

Prümper heads Yokomo 1-2 in Q3

Yannic Prümper

Former ETS race winner Yannic Prümper has TQ’d the third & penultimate round of qualifying at Apeldoorn setting the fastest time by 3/10th of a second over Yokomo team-mate Cyril N’diaye who in turn was a tenth quicker than Tamiya’s Jilles Groskamp in third.

Feeling his Speed Passion powered Yokomo ‘lacked something’ after he set the fourth fastest time in yesterday’s opening qualifier Prümper switched to a different car this morning for Q2 but could only manage one lap before stripping a spur gear. Sticking with the softer BD5 chassis the switch was to prove fruitful for the German teenager as he took maximum points, putting him into contention for overall TQ honours going into the final qualifying round this afternoon.

Cyril NDiaye

French ace N’diaye, who has been really impressive here in the Netherlands on his first ETS appearance with Team Yokomo, adjusted the Ackerman and changed additive for Q3 which made the car just that little bit nicer to drive allowing him to swap position at the top of the timing screens with Prümper.  Planning to run new tyres in the final heat, should the rain not return before then, the former National Champion will be one to watch in the final dash for overall TQ honours.

Setting the fastest lap for the round with a 15.699, Groskamp felt he handed the run to the Yokomo pairing when he spun out on his second lap.  Before the race the two time former ETS champion’s batteries were found to be too high in voltage and this delayed the Q1 pace setter meaning he could only manage a single warm-up lap something he contributed to his spin.  Having switched to a Speed 6 body for the run he will stick with it for Q4 but will revert some small droop adjustment back to that used in Q2.

The only drivers with wins to their names this season Ronald Volker and Juho Levanen set the fourth and sixth fastest times with Kyosho’s Cristopher Krapp separating them in fifth.  Q2 top qualifier Marc Rheinard, who is set to lose his title to Volker at the end of the 2010/11 season, failed to finish the heat after the geardiff in his Tamiya broke.

John Bruins

In the Xray Pro Stock class John Bruins, who hails from Haarlem the same Dutch city where Red RC has its headquarters, managed to deny Martin Hofer from wrapping up the TQ honours as he set both a new fastest 5-minute run and fastest lap for the Speed Passion speedo & motor controlled class.  The winner of last year’s Dutch ETS race Oliver Franke put in his best run to take third ahead of fellow Hot Bodies driver Daniel Wohlgemuth.

Rheinard tops Q2

Marc Rheinard

Current champion Marc Rheinard has taken the second round of qualifying for the Dutch ETS encounter, heading home Q1 pace setter Jilles Groskamp and a much happier Ronald Volker.  Despite heavy overnight rain, conditions for this mornings Q2 were dry but the track was slower meaning neither Rheinard or TRF team-mate Groskamp could repeat their 20 laps from yesterday evening’s opening qualifier. Rheinard said there was less traction following last night’s rain but now his Speed Passion powered TRF417 was good at the beginning of the run and starting to fade at the end, the complete opposite to yesterday.  Able to get an advantage over the first two laps on Groskamp the World Champion said he should have had a bigger margin on his team-mate but for ‘some stupid laps’ as he followed closely behind the No.1 starting car.

Clearly quicker than his rivals over the opening laps of the first qualifier Groskamp said his car was now pushing in the beginning, something he feels may be due to removing his tyre warmers too soon before the start. Running a Protoform’s LTC-R, the Dutch ace will switch to a Speed 6 for Q3 which he hopes will allow him to match Rheinard’s corner speed.

Ronald Volker

Having had his car shut down in the opening heat, champion elect Ronald Volker was clearly in higher spirits today as he took his LRP powered Yokomo to 3rd.  The German ace spent 3 hours working on his car this morning as he switched to the same set-up as French team-mate Cyril N’diaye.  A big improvement, he said it was now much easier to drive and believes that without the two 16 second laps caused by traffic incidents he could have been very close to matching the pace of the two Tamiyas.  Fifth fastest in Q1 N’diaye was on target for another Top 5 run until he made a big mistake on his 14th lap which cost him a massive 3.5 seconds.

Another of the top drivers who failed to finish the opening qualifier after he stripped a rear belt, Team Kyosho’s Christopher Krapp enjoyed a strong start to Day 2 taking his TF6 to the fourth fastest time. Really pleased with his car, the German said his driving on this occasion did not get the most from it.

Fifth fastest, a substantial 1.6 seconds off Krapp, TRF driver Viktor Wilck was not happy with his run summing up how the car felt promptly with ‘shit, like driving on ice’.

Freddy Sudhoff

With former World Champion Andy Moore absent due to British Championship commitments this weekend, Freddy Sudhoff is the lead Hot Bodies driver.  Having struggled yesterday the rapid German fully rebuilt his TCX for Q2 reverting back to the standard kit chassis plate which allows the car to roll more.  Able to run the sixth fastest time he is a lot happier with the feeling and is confident of further improvements in Q3 and 4.

Winner of the fourth round of the ETS back in March Juho Levanen said his Reedy motored Associated TC6 is slowly getting better but still lacks steering.  The Finn hopes two cuts in the top deck for Q3 will cure the problem.

Martin Hofer

In Pro Stock, Schumacher’s Martin Hofer made it two out of two as he was again fastest from the Tamiya of Dutch driver John Bruins with Swiss driver Sandro Kuriger, also driving a Tamiya, third.

Groskamp heads Tamiya 1-2-3 in Q1

Jilles Groskamp

The opening round of qualifying at the Dutch round of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series produced a Tamiya 1-2-3 with Jilles Groskamp setting the pace ahead of Marc Rheinard and Viktor Wilck. Making a one off return to the series this weekend at Apeldoorn, the two time ETS champion said afterwards that he thinks he can go faster as he was only driving at 95%.  Opening up an early lead at the start the Dutch ace said he just tried to maintain that gap over Rheinard, eventually taking the round by half a second despite having to avoid a number of incidents.

Marc Rheinard

Current Champion Rheinard said his Speedpassion motored TRF417 felt ‘pretty good’ but for the first two laps, which is where he is losing out to team-mate Groskamp whose car is good right from the start.  Fresh from winning the Reedy Race of Champions in California two weeks ago the German thinks the difference is down to tyre prep and will change for Q2.  Wilck had the opposite problem with his car losing grip at the end of the run causing him to miss out on a 20 lap run as he made a few mistakes as he attempted to keep pace with his team-mates.

Yannic Prumper

Yannic Prumper was the best non Tamiya in fourth ahead of Yokomo team-mate Cyril N’diaye. Prumper said the run was ‘just Ok’ and something was just missing but he is not sure what it is.  Former French Champion N’diaye was very happy with his fifth position.  Switching to a mixture of Xexon and Rheinard additives he said it improved the car a lot from the final practice. Also making the Top 10 for Yokomo was Lucas Urbain and Loic Jasmin.  Eighth fastest, Urbain said he is starting to get his BD5 to his liking while ninth fastest Jasmin, who run an almost identical set-up to N’diaye, was annoyed with himself for making a mistake on his last lap which cost him 2.5 seconds.

Yokomo team leader Ronald Volker failed to complete the run as the electrics in his BD5 shut down.  The winner of three from four of the opening ETS events, the German said he took a risk with his speedo settings and it didn’t pay off but he added even if this had of worked he is still struggling with chassis set-up.

Juho Levanen

Splitting the four Yokomos were Steen Graversen’s Awesomatix and Juho Levanen’s Associated TC6 with the sixth & seventh fastest times.  Levanen said having got his power problems sorted his chassis set-up now needed working on.  David Ehrbar completed the Top 10 as the fastest Xray. Elsewhere Kyosho’s Christopher Krapp said his Kyosho felt really good until he was forced out when the rear belt stripped.  Other non finishers included Corally’s Marc Fisher, Austrian Thomas Prumper who broke a front drift shaft and Awesomatix team driver Martin Lissau.

Martin Hofer

In Pro Stock Martin Hofer took the opening qualifier ahead of practice topping John Bruins and Daniel Wohlgemuth.  Setting the fastest lap for the round, the championship standings leader said ‘new tyres did the magic’ for his Mi4CX and he now just needs to focus on ensuring he puts in clean runs in the remaining heats.

Bruins said his Tamiya suffered a little understeer at the start of the run due to the fresh tyres but by the end it felt good and he is confident he can top Q2 tomorrow.  Driving a Hot Bodies TCX Wohlgemuth said his run was looking strong until he lost time behind Ivan Laptev five laps from home as the Russian recovered from an off. Vasco Christiaanse failed to complete the run as he suffered motor glitches.  The Top Qualifier at last year’s Dutch ETS encounter he said he already changed the receiver and then the motor in practice but the intermittent problem is still there and so for Q2 he will run a new speedo.

As all the drivers retire to their hotel at the end of the first day in Apeldoorn, as predicted the heavens have opened over the track with rain forecast to continue tomorrow however Sunday is showing to be a dry sunny day.

Tamiyas top practice

Jilles Groskamp

The Tamiyas of Jilles Groskamp and John Bruins will carry the No.1 in the top Xenon Modified and Xray Pro Stock stock heats respectively after the Dutch pair set the fastest three consecutive laps in the final practice for the fifth round of the ETS at Apeldoorn. Former Champion Groskamp was one of the few top drivers to improve their 3-consecutive lap average in P4 setting a time of 15.586 with his Orion powered TRF417 to top current champion Marc Rheinard who along with Viktor Wilck, Ronakd Volker, Yannic Prumper and Cyril Ndiaye failed to improve their P3 times.

Christopher Krapp

Improving his average from 16.050 to 15.841 Team Kyoshos Christopher Krapp moved himself into the top heat as he ended practice with the seventh fastest time ahead of Austrias Thomas Pumpler who also found pace in P4.

Having struggled for straight line speed in early practice on a track where Xray driver David Ehrbar was clocked at 104kmh, Juho Levanen found some grunt but still only managed the 11th fastest time and misses out on running on the top heat to the Corally of Olivier Bultynck and Awesomatix of former ETS Top Qualifier Steen Graversen who in P3 set the 9th and 10th fastest times.

John Bruins

Pro Stock saw the Top 18 drivers record their fastest times in the final practice with Bruins outpacing P3 pace setter Vasco Christiaanses Kyosho by 8/100th as they broke into a 17 second average. Martin Hofer was again third ahead of Jens Kröger and the Top Qualifier in Poland Ivan Laptev.
