Volker tops free practice as rain haults proceedings

fri_ronald

Rain haulted proceedings at Round 5 of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series in Luxembourg just as controlled practice was due to get underway at Mini Circuit “Ville de Luxembourg”.  Having started off a dry day, allowing two rounds of free practice to be completed, the heavy rain left race organisers with no choice but to stop the event with the free practice times now expected to determine the reseeding of the qualifying heats. The free practice times would produce no surprises with last year’s race winner Ronald Volker fastest from team-mate Yannic Prumper.  Behind them Xray’s Bruno Coelho completed the Top 3 in front of Marc Rheinard.

fri_volcar

With drivers having completed 5-rounds of free practice yesterday Volker, having used two cars in each of those runs, today said he focused on running a single car to get into a good rhythm for 5-minutes.  Feeling his LRP powered BD7 was working ‘quite well’, the German said while it was ‘good’ to be at the top the times sheets it was only free practice and not a true picture of where his rivals are really at.

fri_yannic

Running Hitec’s new Lynx radio for the first time this weekend,  finding the switch from Sanwa to take a bit of time to adjust to, Prumper said his Much More powered BD7 was really good yesterday.  Adjusting the rear droop, adding more for today, the 21-year-old said the change had left it a little slow to start off and for when proceedings do get back underway he will go back to the same as he ran yesterday.

fri_coelhoname

Coelho said his T4 was ‘super fast but not consistent’.  Although he raced 1:8 nitro here aged 11, the track then not having its feature Laguna Seca corner, the Portuguese ace said he was still trying to learn what he described as a ‘super fun but difficult’ layout.  Changing to a painted signature colour scheme bodyshell for the last free practice round in preparation for using it the rest of the event he said it mounts slightly further back on the car and this has caused him to lose a little steering.  As a result he will have to revert back to his white practice bodyshell.

fri_marcR

Runner-up to Volker here last year, Rheinard said while his Tamiya was ‘OK’ in the last practice overall things had not started off so good.  Fresh from winning a record 5th Reedy Race of Champions title last weekend in California, he said while the car is safe to drive it is understeering in the fast corners.  Looking to further change his set-up once action resumes, when asked about the rain changing the track he said a much little shower yesterday had little effect on the traction levels him predicting it ‘should be fine’.

fri_alex

Fifth fastest, Alexander Hagberg reported the opposite issues to team-mate Coelho.  The Swede said, ‘I think my car is pretty consistent but not super fast’.  He continued, ‘the car is good but I need to find more steering for the fast stuff as it is just a little too slow’.

fri_wilckcar

Serpent’s Viktor Wilck would complete the Top 6, the Swede saying it’s ‘all going well’.  Running the same set-up he ran at the ETS in Mattsee and at the Reedy Race, he said even though the track here is totally different his S411 feels really good.  Running both of the morning’s free practices on used tyres, he is confident that on new rubber he has the pace to run close to Top 3 pace.

fri_jilles

Behind Yokomo’s Loic Jasmin, Jilles Groskamp would post the 8th fastest time.  A driver who has great memories of the track as it was where he won his first European Championship 6-years ago, the HB driver said things were already going a bit better than the previous two ETS outings.  Happy with his first run of the day, the Dutchman changed to a heavier diff oil for the second but while his PRo5 was faster over a single lap it was less consistent and he will go back.  New to the team, who have also recruited Freddy Sudhoff this year, the 2012 World Champion said the team has really started to gel now.  With all the drivers running off the same ‘good base set-up’ he said having lost their way in Mattsee they are now making smaller ‘fine tuning’ adjustments between rounds and that is paying dividends.

fri_sudhoffcar

Sudhoff would record the ninth fastest time describing his early performance as ‘not so bad’.  Having tried a number of shock set-up changes on his PRO5 he said ‘some worked good, some worked bad’ but they had helped the team to find a good direction in which to go with set-up.  One of a number of drivers coming directly to Luxembourg from the Reedy Race, he said going from the small tight Tamiya Raceway to here couldn’t be more contrasting and he was still trying to fine tune his driving style to the huge track.

fri_meendriv

First time Mini Circuit “Ville de Luxembourg” visitor Meen Vejrak rounded out the Top 10. The Yokomo driver said his BD7 improved a lot after many set-up changes over the 7 rounds of free practice.  Having struggled with no traction he said it while he was still working to find more compared to yesterday it was now a lot better.  Still learning the track he said its right side is proving quite difficult to master.

Track Focus – Mini Circuit “Ville de Luxembourg”

fri_trackpano

Track Name – Mini Circuit “Ville de Luxembourg”
Country – Luxembourg
Location – Luxembourg City
Host – Luxembourg Model Car Club (LMCC)
Surface – Asphalt
Direction – Anti-clockwise
No. of ETS Races hosted – 1 (2014)

After a very successful first visit to Mini Circuit “Ville de Luxembourg” last year the ETS returns to what is undoubtably one of the best tracks in Europe.  Famed for its Laguna Seca corkscrew style corner which has an elevation of approximately 2-metres the layout is hugely popular with drivers and for a country of only half a million people its a track revered by racers across the World.  Run by the Luxembourg Model Car Club (LMCC), the 310 metre long track was built in 1999 after the club reached a long term agreement to rent a plot of land from the City of Luxembourg.  Unfortunately for the last 5-years however the track has been operating on somewhat borrowed time.  The City has earmarked the parcel of land on which the track is located for mixed development with plans already drawn up that include housing, shops and a train station.  Thankfully however for the club and the ETS, the green light to start the groundwork for the development hasn’t yet been given meaning drivers can at least for now continue to enjoy this great track.

In addition to the corkscrew, the scale of which can only truly be appreciated by walking it, the track also features a 10 degree banked corner at the end of the main straight.  Undergoing an infield redesign in 2007,  in 2013 the track surface was polished using 1mm steel balls and last year drivers felt this left the track with low traction.  Commenting on the traction this time round, reigning ETS Champion Ronald Volker said it was now better.  Having wrapped up his fourth consecutive title here last year, the Yokomo driver said it as a ‘great track’ and ‘it is still one of the best in the World’.  Volker’s team-mate Meen Vejrak, who is on his first visit to the track, replied ‘it’s totally different’ when asked what he thought of the track.  Describing it as ‘really fun’ to drive the Thai driver said it was difficult, having always raced on flat tracks, to get used to the elevation changes.

Volker ‘LUX’ to secure fifth ETS title

fri_corkscrew

Ronald Volker travels to Luxembourg this weekend looking to claim a fifth consecutive title in the Yokomo Euro Touring Series. Securing 4-in a row when he took victory at the huge track famed for its Laguna Seca style feature corner, a perfect weekend for the Yokomo driver would be enough to put the title beyond the reach of the German’s three remaining challengers.

Heading that challenge is his own team-mate Yannic Prumper, winner of Round 3 when the ETS made a return to Italy, who currently sits second in the standings. Only fourth in the standings due to carrying a 9th place finish at the previous round in Austria, long time title rival Marc Rheinard is also in the hunt but the last driver to be ETS champion before Volker’s reign he needs to finish on the top step of the podium come Sunday. Having just beaten Volker to a record 5th title at the Reedy International Touring Car Race of Champions last weekend in California, the championship’s most winning driver will be hoping he can carry his form back to Europe. Albeit only an outside chance, the only other driver left with a mathematical chance of being crowned champion of Season #8 of the ETS is Xray’s Alexander Hagberg but he needs to TQ and win as well as for Volker to finish off the podium to go to the season finale at the Hudy Arena still in the game.

While the championship title will be the focus of Volker and his challengers, the second outdoor race of the season has attracted a number of potential winners whose only target will be only trying to add a first ever ETS race win. One of those drivers is reigning World Champion Naoto Matsukura. Having switched from Yokomo to Tamiya, the Japanese stars hasn’t had the greatest of starts with his new team with him missing the A-Main on his first ETS outing in Italy. At the Reedy Race he was also never a serious contender but he is confident that a combination of the big track and a growing knowledge of his TRF419 he can turn this around in Luxembourg. One of the stars of Round 4 in Mattsee, fellow Japanese TRF driver Akio Sobue will be looking to build on an impressive run including taking a number of wins at the Reedy Race. A drivers who relishes small tracks, Luxembourg could be a shock to the system for the 20-year-old but an finalist at the WorldChampionships in Florida he is still fast no matter what size of track he is faced with.

Star of those Worlds, Bruno Coelho is another driver looking for that first win with most predicting its not a mattter of if but when he will get the job done. The arrival of the Portuguese talent has generated renewed interest in touring car racing especially his rivalry with Volker which has seen incidents at the last two ETS encounters.

Claiming his first ETS podium in Italy and joining Rheinard & Volker on the podium at the Reedy Race, former nitro touring car World Champion Meen Vejrak appears to have really found his way with Yokomo’s BD7 and the Thai driver is certain to be one to watch again in Luxembourg. The driver Meen pipped to that podium finish at Tamiya Raceway, Christopher Krapp showed he’s now fully up to speed with his Tamiya and the popular German is determined to deliver a first podium for new TRF team.

Others to watch will be Frenchman Lucas Urban. A driver who shot to prominence when he was the star of the 2009 European Championships in Luxembourg driving an aging Losi chassis, the now VBC team driver just missed the podium last year. Making a return to the ETS at this event last year after a long absence and finishing on the podium, 2012 World Champion Jilles Groskamp has always been quick at this track. Winning his first European title there, he will be looking to help put his new HB team in the mix for at least a podium finish after a character building outing in Mattsee. Team-mate Freddy Sudhoff, who showed great speed at the Reedy Race, will also be hoping the weekend is one where everything comes together with his new team. Chasing their first ever ETS win Serpent will pin their hopes on Viktor Wilck while the potential of up & coming star Michal Orlowski and his Schumacher should add interest to the weekend’s Ride Modified class action.

In the Xray Pro Stock class, last year’s event produced a great battle between Xray’s Marek Cerny and ARC’s Lars Hoppe. With two wins a piece from the opening four races the two are set to once again to do battle as leading title contenders. In Formula, despite missing Italy due to a shoulder injury, Jan Ratheisky could be celebrating his 3rd consecutive title in the class if he finishes on the podium but having won three from three its very likely the Xray driver will lift the title in style.

Volker secures 2nd win of ETS Season #8

sun_ronwin

Ronald Volker has won the fourth round of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series, the win in Austria marking the reigning champion as the first double winner of Season #8.  An A3 showdown between the Yokomo driver and Tamiya’s star of the weekend Akio Sobue, Top Qualifier Volker wouldn’t put a wheel wrong to secure the overall win ahead of the Japanese A1 winning driver.  Securing third in A3 after team-mate Bruno Coelho crashed on the penultimate lap, Xray’s Alexander Hagberg would complete the podium at the second running of the fahr(T)raum hosted event.

sun_a3volkker

‘Very very excited to end a tough weekend with the win’, was Volker’s reaction to his 12th ETS race win.  After the disappointment of Italy where having TQ’d he only finished 4th, he said to get the TQ and win today was the perfect weekend in terms of his quest for a fifth consecutive ETS title.  Commenting the final race of the weekend, Volker said he was never comfortable over the 5-minutes saying his tyres that had done all four of the qualifiers and the previous two finals were ‘absolutely done’.  Lacking overall traction from the start it got worse over the run and he said he was fully on the limit trying to stay ahead of Sobue.  With Round 5 taking drivers to Luxembourg, a track where Volker clinched the title last year and says is his favourite track, he is feeling pretty confident about the championship with rivals such as Marc Rheinard and his own team-mate Yannic Prumper having not had a good weekend in Austria.

sun_sobue

On his second ever ETS outing, his first being last years season finale at the Hudy Arena, Sobue was very happy to finish competitive on the podium.  The 20-year-old was however a little dissapointed that he didn’t get the opportunity to race Volker for the win in A3 but said his tyres where done after A2 so he had no chance.  With his performance contrasting that of his high profile team-mates, Sobue said he was looking forward to more ETS outings with RF engineer Takayuki Kono confirming he will travel to Luxembourg although Sobue said he is not sure he will like such a big track.

sun_alexander

Hagberg said while ‘of course (he is) happy to be on the podium’, he was also disappointed with the fact that having had such a good car yesterday the conditions today left him struggling.  The Swede said with this in mind the podium was a good result and also good for the overall championship.  Commenting on his weekend Coelho said ‘today was not to be my day’.  A driver to bring an new air of interest into touring car with his aggressive driving style, the Portuguese driver said he made too cautious a start to A3.  Having broken a rear tyre and had to glue it for A3 he said this also left his T4 slightly unbalanced but a set-up change for the race made it ‘super good’.  Able to catch Volker, unfortunately he would slide wide at the end of the straight after hitting a damp patch and this let Sobue through to second.  Trying to retake the place, adding he had nothing to lose, he had an off.  Not dwelling on the weekend the 21-year-old said ‘we will try again in Luxembourg’ many predicting its only a matter of time before he joins the exclusive list of ETS race winners.

sun_prutech

Finishing fourth, ETS Italy winner Yannic Prumper said nothing more was possible’.  The Yokomo driver said ‘luckily Bruno crashed each time or I would be leaving with fifth place points instead of fourth’.  With Luxembourg his favourite track the 21-year-old was confident he would be back at the front for Round 5.

sun_Fmarc

With Serpent completing the Top 6 with Marc Fischer and Viktor Wilck, Fischer said ‘last year I was fourth this year I am fifth so I suppose it was an OK weekend and for sure was better than Italy’.  Looking to Luxembourg he said ‘myself, Viktor & Jirka (Hassler) will work hard on it and hopefully it can be a good race for us’.

sun_f1pod

In Formula, which would also be decided in A3, it was also the reigning champion that would take home the biggest trophy with Jan Ratheisky taking a tone to tone win.  His challenger, A2 winner David Erhbar saw his race ruined in the first few corners as he got hit from behind from Mike Gosvig.  In the end ETS Italy winner Erhbar’s Serpent would finish second overall with Jacques Libar completing the podium. With Lars Hoppe wrapping up the Xray Pro Stock win in A2, A3 would decide who joined him on the podium. Gosvig would head home Ratheisky and that is the order they finished in the overall results behind Hoppe.

Volker wins A2 from Sobue

sun_voleading

After the dramas of A1 Ronald Volker took an easy win in the second A-Main at ETS Austria, the Yokomo driver heading home the Tamiya of A1 winner Akio Sobue by 2.4 seconds as Bruno Coelho retired early after putting his Xray in the boards of the temporary track.  Alexander Hagberg would complete the Top 3, the Xray driver struggling as the track had even less traction than A1 when he finished a close second to Sobue.

sun_ronald

‘A2 was a different, much better story for me and I was able to run a clean safe race’, that was how Volker summed up the second of the three A-Mains.  With the result putting the Top Qualifier in a strong position to wrap up his 12th ETS win on the difficult to overtake track, the German said conditions were tricky second time round as overall traction was lower.  The problem was also compounded by a number of damp spots that had developed as drops of water from the outside found their way through the roof joints of the massive marquee the track is housed in.  Volker said he had to adjust his line to a tighter one at the end of the straight and at the middle hairpin to avoid getting his tyres wet.  After 3-minutes Sobue lost pace and he was able to cruise to the finish adding he hopes for a ‘repeat clean race for the next one’.

sun_sobue2

Sobue, who at worst will claim his first ETS podium in a top 2 position, said he struggled with no traction at the start after hitting a damp spot.  While the tyres came back after a number of laps and he was able to match Volker on pace, his fastest lap slightly faster, he said he couldn’t make up the time lost as his tyres were done.  Unfortunately with new tyres a big disadvantage in the low traction conditions, the track having had high bit last year, the Japanese driver said he has no choice but to continue with the same tyres forA3.

sun_hagbergcar

Hagberg said it was ‘a shame that we have to race in these conditions and the outside rain is affecting the race’, the Swede’s comments in reference to the damp patches.   Although he would record the fastest lap of the race he described his ORCA powered T4 as ‘worse than A1’ as he struggled to keep up with the leaders and was just trying to maintain his position for the 5-minutes in the end finishing 9/10th of a second ahead of Yannic Prumper.  The 2-time ETS race winner said he had no choice than to change his set-up for the closing race of the event if he is to stand a chance of keeping up.  Team-mate Coelho said his T4 had no traction and as a result he lost the rear end.  With the car crashing heavily into the track’s wooden boards the impact would break the right steering hub forcing instant  reirement after just 2-laps.

sun_larswin

In the Xray Pro-Stock class Lars Hoppe became the first crowned winner of the Mattsee event as he backed up his A1 result with another convincing win over Mike Gosvig and Jan Ratheisky.  Hoppe’s second win of Season #8 of the ETS, the result together with the bonus point for the overall TQ puts the ARC driver right into contention for the title especially given that defending champion Marek Cerny is struggling this weekend.  Having last year been a strong race contender in Luxembourg, venue for the next round of the championship, the German says he is already looking forward to the event which takes place at the end of this month.  In Formula things looked like going the way of Ratheisky until ETS Italy winner David Erhbar pulled off a great move on the final round down the straight to get is Serpent passed the Xray and forced the the decider to go to A3.
