Rheinard targets repeat win at ETS Germany

ETS_Rheinard

Having made the perfect start to Season #9 of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series with the TQ and win in the Czech Republic, Marc Rheinard will be targeting a repeat performance as the championship travels to Germany this weekend (5-7 February). Attracting a record 440 plus entries, Round 2 takes place in Muelheim-Kaerlich where the Tamiya driver has enjoyed two key successes in the past 12-months.  Last season the 4-time onroad World Champion ended a 5-year drought of ETS victories on carpet at the event and having claimed his first ever Euro Offroad Series win at the same venue just last weekend, the ETS’ most winning driver’s confidence couldn’t be higher.  Racking up his 13th ETS win in Hrotovice, Rheinard’s biggest competition is again set to come from Yokomo in reigning champion Ronald Volker and Xray in both Bruno Coelho & 2014 Mulheim winner Alexander Hagberg.

The first time in 6 seasons that he will arrive at the second round not leading the championship, Volker is ready to resume control of the championship and get his quest for a sixth consecutive title on target. Finishing second to Rheinard at Round 1 back in December, winning the opening A-Main with a great last lap pass on his arch rival, Volker believes having kicked off 2016 with a dominant victory at the DHI Cup that they have found what they lacked.  Three years since Yokomo has won the important German round, Volker’s team-mates Yannick Prumper, who has been a podium finisher at the event the last three years, and Meen Vejrak will also be aiming to be in the mix to give the champion manufacturer  it’s first win of their 2015/2016 campaign.

Having turned around his 2014 ETS debut performance at Hrotovice, when he just scrapped into the A-Main, to being in contention on his second attempt, Coelho is determined to add a first carpet win to his increasingly impressive CV.  Winner of the closing two rounds of last season’s championship on asphalt, the Portuguese star took over the lead of the EOS title race with his second 4WD win of the season in Muelheim last weekend, the location a good proving ground for Xray.  Hagberg was dominant 2-years ago topping all four qualifiers and wrapping up the win in A2.  The Swede hasn’t won an ETS encounter since but coming into the event fresh from victory at the Snowbirds in the US that could be about to change.

With travel restrictions forcing him to miss the season opener, reigning World Champion Naoto Matsukura returns for Round 2.  The Japanese driver’s first visit to the venue, it will also be his first ETS carpet outing with Tamiya and he would very much like to mark the occasion with a first win of the championship, his previous outings not even netting him a podium finish.  With the event last year marking his final outing with Kyosho, TRF team-mate Christopher Krapp will be hoping for a better Round 2 having missed out on the A-Main at the season opener.  A race where he has been on the podium, the popular former ETS race winner would like to mark his first full season with Tamiya with a strong showing.

One driver who could provide a surprise this weekend is Viljami Kutvonen.  While the Awesomatix lead driver made the A-Main in Czech, the Finn was disappointed with his 10th place finish.  The only one to challenge Volker at the DHI Cup, he is out to make amends and show the true potential of the new belt drive A800.  Kutvonen’s former Awesomatix team-mate Freddy Sudhoff will lead the HB charge this weekend. The German who had a character building first round will be joined by team-mate JJ Wang, the American/Chinese driver making his ETS carpet debut.

In the Xray Pro Stock and Serpent Formula class it is the same driver that the combined 249 entries of the two classes will be out to beat.  Double Top Qualifier and race winner at Round 1, the reigning Formula Champion Jan Ratheisky fresh from success at the Snowbirds will get the opportunity to race against one of the greatest legends of the sport.  Coming out of retirement for the event, 14 time World Champion Masami Hirosaka will make his ETS debut when he races in Formula at the controls of a Yokomo YR-10.  In Pro Stock, Ratheisky’s main challenge will come from his Xray team-mate & reigning champion Marek Cerny.  The Czech driver has been Top Qualifier and race winner in Germany for the past 2-years.

Masami to come out of retirement for ETS debut

Masami to come out of retirement for ETS debut

Legend of the sport Masami Hirosaka is to come out of international racing retirement to make his debut in the World famous Yokomo Euro Touring Series.  Having officially retired from top flight competition after the 2008 Touring Car World Championships in Thailand, the same year the first season of ETS was completed, the 14-time World Champion will compete in the German round in two weeks time (Feb 5-7).  Having last raced in Europe during the 2006 World Championships in Italy, the multiple onroad & offroad World Champion will be one of 8 World Champions who make up the record entry in Muelheim-Kaerlich.

Having spent recent years giving something back to the sport through his work as a TV personality and as a JMRCA official, being the Assistant Race Director of last October’s 1:10 Offroad World Championship at the Yatabe Arena in Japan, Masami’s return to competition will come at the controls of a Formula car.  A class that is enjoying strong growth within the ETS and around the world, the second race of Season #9 attracting 130 entries, he will race a Yokomo YR-10 in his signature green, pink & white colour scheme.

Rivals strive to end Volker/Yokomo reign in ETS#9

fri_trackfish

The Czech Republic is the venue for the start of Season #9 of the Euro Touring Series this weekend (11-13 Dec) with the world’s best drivers descending on the small town of Hrotovice in their quest to win one of the sport’s most coveted titles.  A season in which the World famous championship will celebrate its 50th race, it is again Ronald Volker and Team Yokomo who everyone is out to beat, the successful combination targeting a sixth consecutive title.  Maintaining their long standing sponsorship of the ETS, Yokomo also remain as title sponsors for a sixth season.  The big change for the 2015/16 season is the arrival of Volante as the new tyre supplier for the touring car classes and the change has created an air of anticipation among Yokomo’s rival teams, none more than long running championship runners up Marc Rheinard and his Tamiya team.

Only winning 2 races on his way to his latest title, one of which was at last season’s opener in Hrotovice, Volker again leads the Yokomo assault but even within his own team the German, who has amassed 12 ETS wins, faces strong opposition.  Yannic Prumper enjoyed a win in Italy on his way to fourth in the 2014/15 standings however having been somewhat labelled as the team’s No.2 driver, he and his engineer Toni Rheinard are out to prove otherwise with a World Championship year coming up.  Last season would see former nitro touring car World Champion Meen Vejrak make a break through in top level electric touring car action and become a front runner with a podium finish in Riccone leading his team to extend the ETS programme of the Thai star.

Maintaining the mantle of being the ETS’ most winning driver despite having had to concede the title to Volker for the last 5 seasons, 2009/10 champion Marc Rheinard will again be one of Volker’s greatest opponents. A driver who was very vocal in the past about the influence tyres had on the racing, the 4-times World Champion will be hoping the switch to Volante will allow him to have a straight up race with his arch rival Volker.  With World Champion team-mate Naoto Matsukura withdrawing from Round 1, Tamiya’s other big hope for a successful weekend is Christopher Krapp.   2015 was the German’s first year with the team and as a former race winner he will be kicking off the 6 round championship by adding a second win to his tally.

With Hrotovice marking Bruno Coelho’s first ETS appearance and his first race on carpet, the Portuguese ace qualified only 8th on his debut.  Over the rest of the campaign however he would mark himself out as a real title contender for the new season.  Winning the final two rounds, he would finish third overall with carpet races having been his weakness, but as he comes up to complete his first full season as a professional driver with Xray, expect the recently crowned electric Offroad World Champion to be fighting for the win.  Team-mate Alexander Hagberg is a two time winner on carpet and now having a team-mate of Coelho’s caliber to work with, this should be Xray’s strongest title campaign to date.

Making a vey welcomed return to the ETS in 2015, inaugural champion Jilles Groskamp heads the challenge of the HPI Racing/HB team.  The former World Champion is still in his first year with his new team but having recently become Euro Nitro Series Champion with them, he travels to Round 1 with high hopes.  Another of the team’s new for 2015 signings, joining longtime recruit & former World Champion Andy Moore, Freddy Sudhoff has also showed promises with the PRO5. The German has been on the podium but the win has so far eluded the high rated driver.

Elsewhere Sudhoff’s old team Awesomatix come to Hrotovice armed with their all new A800.  Finishing 5th at last year’s encounter, fast Finn Viljami Kutvonen is the Russian team’s lead charger and has elsewhere shown well with the new car.  Having added Viktor Wilck to its line-up at Round 2 last year, Serpent will be hoping their first full ETS campaign with the Swede will get off to a strong start with team-mate Marc Fischer a former podium finisher at the Mibosport hosted event.

In the Xray Pro Stock class, defending 3-time consecutive champion Marek Cerny heads the entry but Czech driver struggled at his home race last year.  The race would instead be dominated by ARC’s Lars Hoppe setting up a title fight between the two drivers over the rest of the season. Joining the winners roll of honour last season as the only driver to beat Cerny and Hoppe,  Serpent’s Julian Borowski could be one to join the mix for title honours.

In the newly titled Serpent Formula class, reflecting the former class champions becoming a primary sponsor of the new season, Jan Ratheisky is back in search of four in a row.  Champion of the past three seasons, the Xray driver is again the title favourite but as the class continues to grow so to does the level of competition.  With 226 drivers registering championship points in Season #8, 86 drivers are making the trip to the Czech Republic where racers will have to run spec wing sets for the first time.  Continuing to race on a Ride tyre, expect Serpent’s David Erhbar, VBC’s Olivier Bultynck and multiple former Pro Stock Champion Alexander Stocker plus a few others to put pressure on Ratheisky.

2014/15 Formula Champion Jan Ratheisky Interview

2014/15 Formula Champion Jan Ratheisky Interview

Here is the 2nd part of Xray’s interview series with 2014/15 ETS series winners Marek Cerny and Jan Rathiesky. Having already heard from Marek Cerny, this time it is the turn of back to back to back Formula Champion and Pro Stock championship contender Jan Rathiesky from Germany.

Jan-2

Congratulations on your second consecutive ETS Formula Champion title with the Xray X1. How are you enjoying your title?

Thank you very much! It is my third title in a row, and the second that I have achieved with the X1 car. I am very happy and proud of this achievement! This last title is, for me, even more valuable because in the middle of the season I broke my shoulder and I could not race in Italy… and so I lost valuable points. Since I missed one race I had to work even harder to catch back up. I raced with a lot of pain in my shoulder, so I’m doubly happy about this win.

Jan-3

Is the competition level increasing in the Formula class?

Absolutely, yes it is. We get more and more good racers in F1 because the class is expanding very quickly and is becoming much more professional. I remember in my first season that I just recharged my battery and raced all the races… I was just having fun. But on the other hand I like to battle with good contenders. To ensure that F1 remains a fun class, we had a meeting at the last ETS race in Slovakia between the organizers and manufacturers about the future development and rules of this class. I consider this a great sign for the industry.

Jan-4

What were the main reasons that allowed you to win ETS for second consecutive time?

The main reasons are our excellent car and our exceptional team. We work very hard to continually improve all the time. Martin is a true professional and a very dedicated person, and it is really a pleasure to work with him and the rest of the Xray R&D team. We internally discuss whatever I have on my mind, and the speed of development & production of prototypes at Xray is simply marvellous. This flexibility allowed us to develop the car very quickly, and we can adapt to changes in the competition. I would also say that I have somewhat of an advantage in this class because I have run 1/12 for a very long time at a very basic club level… sometimes with broken tires, sometimes racing in challenging conditions, and other things. So I have a lot of experience in being able to handle my car in many conditions, and I know how to set up the car for those conditions. That’s very important in F1 because you need to push your tires a lot.

Jan-2

What are your goals for next season?

The dream would be a fourth title in a row in F1 and a third title for Xray. Of course I will do my best to make this dream a reality, so there is a lot of work ahead of us again. After some short summertime holidays, I am back full force and ready to race again.

Jan-5

As you look back at the time since you started, what would be your advice to young RC car drivers who want to become as successful as you?

Don’t think too much when you drive, try to have the most fun at any time. Try to understand your car, make notes about every change you make, and how you think the changes went, good or bad. Then try to learn from that and use it for the next races. And one very good tip at the end: take a look in the Xray Set-up Database or ask a Team driver directly. We’re very happy when we can help you.

2014/15 Pro Stock Champion Marek Cerny Interview

Cerny ETS

Having taken both the highly competitive Pro Stock and Formula class titles in the 2014/2015 season, Xray sat down and interviewed their Factory drivers Marek Cerny and Jan Rathiesky about their recent success in what is the biggest onroad series in the World. First up its Czech driver and 3 time Champion Marek Cerny.

Cerny2

Congratulations on your third consecutive ETS Champion Stock title. How does it feel?

Thank you very much! It is certainly a great feeling. In the ETS series of races it is not enough to be good or have the luck to win one race, but you need to continue to work the entire year. So the ETS is about the teamwork during the entire racing season. I won all of my three ETS titles with Team Xray, and of course I am very happy and proud of what we have achieved together. It is a mutual partnership where we constantly push each other to do better, and this season it has again paid off.

Cerny1

Is the competition level increasing in the Stock class?

Oh yes indeed. Before me it was Zdenko Kunak who won the Stock title for Xray, so this is already the fourth consecutive win for Team Xray. Every year the competition gets stronger and faster, which of course motivates us to push our limits even further. There is now much more time spent in a preparation for the races, and the smallest details can make a big difference.

Cerny3

What is your recipe for success?

It’s combination of everything involved: driver, car, team, work, luck, dedication, and even state of mind. You cannot leave out any one of these, it has to be the proper mixture of all these factors. Our team works extremely hard and we do a lot of testing during the year, so it is not only about the race itself but also about what goes on in between. We test a lot of different things and I am regularly at the Xray factory, racing at local races and practices, and we actively work with Martin. I test all his new ideas and he listens to the drivers; thankfully Martin is also a racer so he understands everything we tell him. I had a rough start to the season and I had to catch up a lot and work even harder during the rest of season, but luckily everything worked out well and we took home the title once again.

Cerny4

What are your plans and expectations for next season?

Right now I am taking a short break for the rest of the summer, and after that the indoor season will start again. I expect that the 2016 ETS season will again be even MORE competitive, but nevertheless we will continue to push ourselves to get better results. I am very excited for the next season!

The new season starts with a race in the Czech Republic, and for me it is always a very prestigious thing. The schedule for next season has a greater pause between races, which will be very good and will give us more time to prepare and rest. I look forward to the next race.
