Yokomo back 2010/11 Euro Touring Series

Yokomo back 2010/11 Euro Touring Series

With the start of the 2010/11 Euro Touring Series just one week away the organisers of the world’s biggest r/c touring car championship are delighted to announce they have concluded a deal with Yokomo that will see the Japanese company become title sponsor.

The fourth season of the ETS, the championship will be known as the ‘Yokomo Euro Touring Series’ and backs up the company’s continued commitment to the competition r/c market in Europe in what has been an ultra successful season for their BD5 Touring Car.  2010 has been a very fruitful year for the team with factory driver Ronald Volker claiming five major titles in Europe winning the DHI Cup, both the Indoor and Outdoor EFRA European Championships, the LRP Masters along with the highly competitive German National Championships.

As part of their title sponsorship Yokomo, who competed in selected rounds of last season’s ETS, will field a full factory assault on the Euro Touring Series as they aim to become the first manufacturer to topple Tamiya’s domination of the modified class over the past three seasons.

Speaking about their new partnership with Yokomo legendary race announcer Scotty Ernst, who together with Uwe Rheinard created the ETS, said, ’We are delighted to welcome Yokomo onboard as title sponsor for what is going to be our biggest and best season yet.  I have known the guys at Yokomo for many years through my work as a race announcer and it is great to have this opportunity now to work together with a company I have so much respect for.  From a racing point of view it is also great that the Yokomo team will compete in all our races as together with Ronald Volker they are one of the most competitive packages in Electric Touring Car in the World and that will add to the spectacle for everyone attending ETS events this year.’

The six round 2010/11 ‘Yokomo Euro Touring Series’ kicks off next weekend, 15-17 October, when a record entry of almost 300 drivers will desend on the town of Kastellaun in Germany for the season opener. Once again the ETS will continue to use hand-out tyres from Xenon Racing and a controlled speedo & motor in the Pro Stock and Hobby classes from Speedpassion who have been a partner of the series since its creation back in 2007.

UPDATE: Due to problems securing the venue for round 3 in Budapest, Hungary, we have had to relocate this round. Taking place on the same date, the new venue will be in St. Pölten, Austria.

Champion Groskamp returns for Dutch ETS encounter

The Xenon Racing backed Euro Touring Series moves outdoors this weekend (May 21-23) as it travels to the Netherlands where Jilles Groskamp makes a welcome return to the series that he has been champion of since its inception three years ago. Having moved to Thailand last year, the reigning European Champion has been unable to defend his ETS title this season but with the MACH still very much his home track the Tamiya Racing Factory driver will be hard to beat at the fifth round of the 2009/2010 Series.

Groskamp has dominated proceedings on the last two ETS visits made to his home country and will be keen to repeat that this weekend as he starts his preparations for the World Championships which will take place in Germany in just over a months time. Groskamp is one of a number of international Touring Car stars using the ETS’ first outdoor race of the year to get valuable competitive mileage under them ahead of the Worlds Warm-up race that takes place next weekend in Burgdorf.

Also making the trip over from Asia to Holland is former World Touring Car Champion and current 1:8 Off Road World Champion Atsushi Hara. The Japanese ace is a previous ETS race winner and will be keen to add another victory as he makes his European debut with Hot Bodies new TCX chassis. The first international asphalt race of the year, this weekend will give both Hara and HB team-mate Andy Moore a chance to gauge the new car against the factory squad of current World Champions Tamiya.

Tamiya have taken victory at all four rounds thus far with current World Champion Marc Rheinard leading the standings by 5 points from Viktor Wilck, who won the opening race at Kastellaun, and they will be keen to maintain the team’s 100% winning record this weekend. Others who should be in the mix in the premiere class at the MACH include Corally team leader Marc Fisher, European Junior Champion Yannic Prümper, Danish  European finalist Steen Graversen and emerging Slovak talent Zdenko Kunák, who heads the Xray challenge.

For the biggest class of the ETS, Round 5 marks a major change in Pro Stock as the organisers introduce, with the help of series sponsor Speed Passion, a controlled speedo to try and create a more level playing field for racers. With all drivers being equipped with the same Cirtix Stock Club Race speedo and Competition 3.0 13.5 turn motor there will be a far greater emphasis on driver ability this weekend. Predicting a winner among the 101 entries is difficult but one can expect Czech ETS race winner Daniel Wohlgemuth, last year’s Dutch ETS winner Rob Janssen, Russian Ivan Laptev, Zdenko Kunák and local ace Vasco Christiaanse, who TQ’d on the last visit to the MACH, to be at the top end of the time sheets.

In the Hobby class the driver to beat is promising Polish youngster Michal Orlowski who leads the standings from Eric Mulder but this is Mulder’s home track and he will be determined to take his first win of the season here. One interesting entry in the class is Frank Groskamp, father of Jilles, and with such a good driver coach he could spring a few surprises on the more established runners.

Round five of the Xenon Racing Euro Touring Series gets underway with practice on Friday and the event can be followed live throughout the weekend on RedRC.net who will be in Heemstede to report on all the action.

ETS Introduces Spec Speedo for Pro Stock

ETS Introduces Spec Speedo for Pro Stock

Our sport has seen some great advances in technology over the past few seasons. The introduction of brushless motors and LiPo batteries has made the sport a more level playing field and a lot more user friendly. Lately however the pace of electronic development has outpaced the sport for many with the latest Stock Spec Speedos become a major talking point. During our most recent events in the Czech Republic and Poland it was very easy to see that racing was being determined by the latest speedo rather than the individual ability of each driver and after racing it was clear that this was taking the fun out of our events for the majority of the Pro-Stock racers who have traveled across Europe with us to be a part of the Euro Touring Series.

The debate on the latest generation of speedos designed specifically for Pro-Stock has become an international one and is sure to continue for some time but after many conversations with drivers of all levels we have decided to take our own action in an attempt to create a more level playing field again at ETS races. Starting at Round 5 in Heemstede we will introduce a spec speedo for the Pro-Stock class. The Speedpassion ‘Citrix Stock Club Race’ will, thanks to the support of Speedpassion, be available for purchase at a special ETS price of just €49 or rental fee of only €5 per event for those only racing in selected rounds.

We have had five Citrix speedos out with drivers for testing and the feedback has been very positive. Although it does not match the same crazy top speeds as the latest generation Stock Spec speedos it does meet our criteria of being easy to set-up, runs motors at low temperature and will give drivers the chance to race on an equal footing. We are also confident it will help produce good close racing. We hope drivers find our decision as a positive thing for the sport and that come Sunday evening in Heemstede we can see that drivers are back enjoying their racing once again.

Speedpassion are preparing a 130 Citrix speedos for Round 5 and these should arrive with use by the end of April. For drivers already registered for Heemstede or Andernach they can order their speedo now and we will ship it to you for pre race testing once we receive them. Unfortunately we are not in a position to ship out rental speedos prior to the race.

Polish capital awaits Euro Touring Series fourth round

Polish capital awaits Euro Touring Series fourth round

Poland plays host to the fourth round of the Xenon Racing backed Euro Touring Series this weekend as it travels to a new venue, the huge Arena Ursynow, in the city of Warsaw. The final carpet race of the 2009/2010 season before the series move outdoors for Rounds 5 & 6, the second visit to the Polish capital has attracted over 200 entries including last year’s winners Yannic Prümper and Meik Niemann. Twelve months ago the two German’s notched up their first international race victories at the event, a special moment they will both be hoping to repeat again come Sunday.

Prümper makes a return to the ETS after school commitments forced him to miss the Czech round where 200mm World Champion Daniele Ielasi filled his drive at Toni-Sport. Despite being out of action for two months, the talented teenager is sure to be back up to speed quickly and be a serious podium contender this weekend.

Leading the championship by 2 points from Tamiya team-mate Viktor Wilck, Marc Rheinard travels to Warsaw as the clear favourite for the top step on the podium. Having won Round 2 in Budapest, the World Champion backed it up with a dominant performance last time out taking victory in the Czech Republic and now has his targets set on a third consecutive ETS race victory. Wilck, winner of the season opener in Kastellaun, is the only other driver to have been on the podium at all three opening rounds and will be determined get the better of Rheinard on the 41M X 28M track and leave Poland back at the top of the points table.

The star of Hrotovice, finishing fourth overall in the A-Main among the quality line-up of international team drivers, Zdenek Hamak will be hoping to repeat his best international performance and further impress Team Xray who are supporting the Czech driver for the 2010 season. Hamak will again have the benefit of working alongside full factory Xray driver Martin Hudy who currently lies joint fourth in the standings with Team Associated’s Juho Levanen.

In the 13.5T Pro Stock class there are four ETS race winners among the 107 entries but it is current standings leader and inaugural Euro Touring Series Pro Stock Champion Alexander Stocker that they will all be out to beat. The German dominated the opening two rounds but in the Czech Republic had to withdraw from the finals allowing fellow German Daniel Wohlgemuth to take his first win in the series from Russian driver Ivan Laptev.

Defending Pro Stock Champion Balint Rajki has had a difficult season so far and really needs to turn things around this weekend to have any chance of retaining his crown. Last year’s event winner Niemann makes a welcomed return to the series having been absent from the racing scene for a few months and is entered to run a Hot Bodies chassis. Another Hot Bodies that can be expected to feature strongly is that of super fast Swede Tommy Bergfeldt. The Redbull backed racer is a previous DHI Cup Champion and back in January had a great battle with Stocker who eventually took the win and so has a point to prove in Poland.

Round four of the Xenon Racing Euro Touring Series will be part of a major feature on Polish television with the country’s top TV station sending a crew along for the weekend to film all the action. OSM, the host club, have also arrange for the Lord Mayor of Warsaw to attend the event on Sunday making this a great showcase for the sport of r/c racing in Poland. Also supported by Speedpassion, the event gets underway with practice on Friday with RedRC.net on hand to bring live coverage throughout the weekend.
