Volker sets early practice pace around challenging Andernach track

Ronald Volker

2010/11 Yokomo Euro Touring Series champion elect Ronald Volker has got the season finale off to a strong start at Andernach topping the first controlled practice ahead of outgoing champion Marc Rheinard. Having grown to over double the size of the 125 entries that attended the inaugural ETS race at Andernach four years ago, the record world class entry are finding this the most challenging event yet at the German track as, unlike the previous three visits, this weekend’s racing is being run in an anti-clockwise direction.

Andernach track

Having endured his worst result of the season when he finished 6th at Apeldoorn in the Netherlands last month, Volker said the new track layout is a lot more challenging with the middle section very hard to get right.  Trying two different Yokomo BD5 WX chassis’ that ran very slight set-up changes between them in CP1, the German said he was happy with the first car but feels the second maybe be better but could not prove that as high winds during the second half of his run blew sand from the nearby volleyball courts on to the track causing a big drop in lap times.

Marc Rheinard

Rheinard, for whom this is his home event, welcomed the change to the track layout but said today’s wind means low traction, resulting in his Tamiya TRF417 feeling loose.  TRF team-mate Viktor Wilck, who was third fastest, said his car had a good balance but admitted that getting the track right was really difficult.

Atsushi Hara

Making his third visit to the ETS at Andernach former Touring Car and 1:8 Offroad World Champion Atsushi Hara was fourth fastest.  The Hot Bodies star said his TCX is not far off being un-driveable over the first three laps but thereafter feels pretty good.  Team-mate Andy Moore, who was 12th fastest, echoed the same problem with his TCX with the pair believing they have more work to do with their preparation of the controlled tyres.

Top Qualifier in the Netherlands when he made his first ETS appearance of the season, two time ETS Champion Jilles Groskamp took his Tamiya to the fifth fastest time saying the ‘bunch’ of chassis changes he made after free practice was the right direction to take.  Describing the Andernach track as ‘completely’ different to Apeldoorn where a diff failure cost him the overall win, Groskamp said Andernach has never been a successful track for him but he prefers the anti-clockwise direction.

Christopher Krapp

Factory Kyosho driver Christopher Krapp was happy to take his TF6 to the sixth fastest time having struggled a little in free practice.  The German said he has a lot of experience of the track but only in the normal clockwise direction.  Describing it as good to drive the World finalist said its a lot more difficult.  Running a front gear diff in the car for the first time he said it made it much better through the big sweeper despite the low traction.  Looking for more rear traction he will try a different tyre prep for CP2.

Paul Lemieux

Fastest of the large factory Xray team present for the season finale is US star Paul Lemieux. The straight talking American, who has brought along Jim Skinner of his electronics supplier Thunder Power along for support, said he doesn’t think he is going to shock the world this weekend but was encouraged by his driving in CP1 saying it was the first battery that he got to terms with the ‘very difficult’ layout.  A finalist on his previous two ETS outings at Andernach Lemieux’s focus now is to figure out the right tyre prep.

In the Xray Pro Stock class Kyosho driver Jens Kröger was fastest ahead of Martin Hofer’s Schumacher with French ace Cyril N’diaye, better known for racing in the Xenon modified class, third. Having enjoyed a great ETS debut for Team Yokomo in Apeldoorn where he finished fourth in Mod, N’diaye has taken on the challenge of both classes this weekend.

Originally planning to run two rounds of qualifying this evening a power failure, caused by a switch failure in the local electricity suppliers junction box outside of the track, resulted in a delay of over an hour and a half.  Due to the loss of time Race Director Scotty Ernst has made the decision to run two run the two rounds of qualifying for the Hobby and Pro Stock classes but will move Q2 for Modified to tomorrow morning.

Champion Rheinard takes first 2010/11 win

Champion Rheinard takes first 2010/11 win

Current ETS champion Marc Rheinard secured his first win as champion of the series today by claiming the top step on the podium at Apeldoorn in the Netherlands.  The fifth & penultimate round of the 2010/11 Yokomo Euro Touring Series, the Tamiya Racing Factory driver took the win over Yannic Prumper, winning of the day’s third A-main, and Top Qualifier Jilles Groskamp.

With Groskamp taking the opening final and Rheinard the second ahead of Ronald Volker, the trio all went into the last race of the event with a chance of the overall win.  Making his first ETS appearance of the season former champion Groskamp looked very much on target to repeat his win from the last time the series visited the superb Apeldoorn track but it was not to be.  Having established a comfortable lead over the Yokomo of Prumper and his TRF team-mate Rheinard, Groskamp’s gear diff started to slip.  Trying to continue the now Thailand based driver eventually had to pull up.

Ronald Volker

Volker’s challenge did not even last a lap as he got pushed onto the grass on the first run down the main straight. The incident, which saw four cars get stuck on the grass, resulted in a rear shock spring retainer being knocked off the champion elect’s Yokomo, ending his race.  With Groskamp and Volker out this automatically gave Rheinard the overall win but enjoying a run of success, including victory at the Reedy Race in California two weeks ago, he wanted to find a way passed Prumper but the teenager held on to take maximum points and the first podium finish of the 2010/11 season for the former race winner.

Modified Top 10

Commenting on his first ETS win since taking victory at last season’s finale 11 months ago, Rheinard said this had been a really positive weekend for Tamiya thanks mainly to the technical input of Groskamp who he said was the fastest car all weekend but was just hit with bad luck.  Fitting a new gear diff to his car Groskamp, who is widely respected as one of the hardest working drivers in the sport, said they knew the shimming of the gear diff is vital but having fitted a new one for the last run he said they still have find more accuracy.

Cyril N'diaye

Having dominated the first three race of the season, Volker said he was disappointed at not having had a clear chance at battling for the win in Leg 3 as his car felt ‘really good’ in the warm-up.  Pleased to see Prumper on the podium and Cyril N’diaye finish fourth overall thanks to his third place in A-Main 3, the Yokomo No.1 was happy with the progress they made having found themselves well off the pace at the beginning of the weekend.

Pro Stock Top 3

With John Bruins having secured a very popular overall victory in the Xray Pro Stock class, allowing him to sit out the third main, this left Martin Hofer to take an easy win over Daniel Wohlgemuth. The result meant the German pair joined Bruins, who secured the first ever TQ and first ever win in the Pro Stock class for Tamiya, on the podium.

A great first outdoor race of the 2010/11 Yokomo Euro Touring Series, drivers now have four weeks to prepare for the season finale at Andernach in German where one of the most star studded entries of the season is expected to take part.

Rheinard wins exciting 2nd A-Main

Marc Rheinard

After a rather dull opening leg of the Xenon Modified A-Main at Apeldoorn the second final provided plenty of action with Marc Rheinard taking the win over the Yokomo’s of Ronald Volker and Yannic Prumper.  The winner of Leg 1, Top Qualifier Jilles Groskamp got completely out of shape as the cars left the start line and ended up on the grass eventually recovering to finish fourth. Also getting loose off the line Rheinard, who started to the right of his team-mate, managed to stay on the asphalt and took up the early lead only to through it away on lap 3.  Rolling his TRF417 one corner earlier than where he lost his chance of victory in the opening leg, this allowed Volker to take the lead.  Heading the pack for 5 laps he was also to roll handing the lead back to the No.2 car of Rheinard.

Volker said afterwards he was lucky to take the lead and admitted he always knew Rheinard would catch him up again, however he did not plan to give the lead back to the World Champion just as easily as he did.

Jilles Groskamp

Setting the fastest lap of the race as he battled for third with Prumper, Groskamp joked afterwards that his Orion electrics ‘had too much power’ but continued that he just had less traction this time round, something which Rheinard said he also had a problem with.

John Bruins

In Pro Stock John Bruins fended off pressure from standings leader Martin Hofer to back up his Leg 1 win and take the overall victory for the Dutch round.  The Dutch racer’s first international win it also marks the first success for Tamiya in Pro Stock, the largest class of the ETS.  A very popular winner with the local crowd, Bruins admitted he had to battle his nerves but said the relief & joy of winning at home was amazing.  Bruins will sit out the third and final leg allowing the other nine drivers to battle for the other podium placings.
