ETS Austria in numbers

Having risen to become one of the toughest, most competitive & prestigious championship’s in the World over the last decade, the Yokomo Euro Touring Series entered into its 11th season last weekend in Austria. A brand new destination on the ETS calendar, Round 1 would take place in Messe Wien located in the historic Prater district of Vienna right next to the oldest amusement park in the world. Invited to be part of Austria’s biggest modelling show by the organisers of Modellbau Messe, the racing would prove a huge hit with the record 63,000 showgoers with the track surrounded by large crowds throughout the 3 days of competition. A great showcase for the sport, the season opener attracted just shy of 250 race entries from 27 nations and collecting data from each of the drivers at technical inspection here is a breakdown of driver’s preferences in chassis manufacturers.

As the reigning champions in both Modified and Pro Stock, it was Xray who proved the most popular brand of choice. Overall the Slovakian manufacturer’s cars were raced by 1 out 3 of the total entry with its biggest share being in Formula with 36 percent of racers.  Sharing the honour of being the second most popular car in the Scorpion Power Systems backed class, with 13 percentage each, was VBC Racing and reigning Formula champions Serpent. Introduced to the ETS program in Season #5, 10 different brands made up the Season #11 opening grid.

The biggest class of the ETS with a grid of 115 cars in Vienna, compared to 72 in Modified and 60 in Formula, the Xray sponsored Pro Stock class saw Awesomatix as the second biggest manufacturer with 19 cars compared to Xray’s 33.  Overall it is Awesomatix who is also the second biggest brand when all touring car class numbers are combined.  Interestingly despite having announced the end of their famous TRF race team after the season opener last year, Tamiya is the 3rd most popular chassis in Pro Stock just ahead of Schumacher.

Filling the void left by Tamiya in the premiere Modified class, Infinity have made solid gains as they undertake their first ETS campaign as a manufacturer with them the second most popular brand in Modified behind Xray. Taking their first win in Vienna, overall the Japanese newcomer shares 3rd position as the touring car of choice with Yokomo and Serpent – each having 17 users.  Xray having a substantial market share of 84 drivers overall with Awesomatix having 26.  The Modified class is the biggest in terms of the number of manufacturers represented in the ETS with new additions Mugen, Destiny and WRC bringing the number to 14 different brands.

After a great start to ETS #11, drivers now have an extended break before another new venue awaits them when Sporthotel & Resort Daun in Germany plays host to Round 2 on February 02-04.

Coelho and Volker complete podium at ETS Austria

With Marc Rheinard putting in a dominant performance to wrap up his first ETS win in 2-years in the second A-Main, the closing race in Vienna, Austria, was a battle for other two podium places.  In the end while the order was a welcomed change, it still had a familiar look as Bruno Coelho and Ronald Volker completed the line-up.  With Rheinard sitting out the race, it was Viljami Kutvonen who started out front, and despite losing the speed that yesterday allowed him to qualify second, he was hopeful of a repeat of the podium finish he opened last season with.  With Coelho getting by Marco Kaufmann quickly, Viljami put in a valiant effort to hold the reigning champion behind him but little over half way in Coelho put an impressive move on the Finn. While the Awesomatix driver tried to come back at him he would touch the boards allowing Alexander Hagberg and Volker through.  With Coelho clear up front, Hagberg had to fend off the fastest man on the track Volker but after contact in A1 the German showed great patience with third enough to give secure the final podium placing.  Hagberg’s P2 for the round would see him take 4th from Viljami on the tie breaker, the result a big disappointment for the latter following his pace in qualifying.

A driver whose pace went the opposite direction to that of Viljami with him only qualifying sixth but ending up on the podium with the fastest lap of the finals, Volker said his set-up changes were tyre related.  The World Champion said, ‘we ran front front tyres from both my sets and that was crucial to my improved pace from A1. I don’t want to blame the tyres but it is something we need to understand better and have a strategy for for Round 2, because of this P3 was the best I was able to do today’.

Jan is back, Ratheisky does double at ETS Austria

Multiple former Pro Stock & Formula Champion Jan Ratheisky bounced back with a bang at the Euro Touring Series season opener in Austria today wrapping up a double victory in the second round of A-Main encounters.  Securing his first pole position in over a season at the Vienna hosted race, the Xray driver ended a 9 race victory drought in Pro Stock thanks to a repeat of his dominant A1 performance.  In Formula, the 4-time back to back champion’s last race win was more recent, the German had to work harder for the win in A2. The man who took the title off him last season, David Ehrbar pushed him hard with the duo swapping positions before Ratheisky found his way back passed the Serpent driver to win by half a second. With Ratheisky sitting out A3, Ehrbar would take the win to secure 2nd overall despite a strong challenge from Luke Lee, the British driver completing the Scorpion Power System Formula podium with his Xray.

In the Xray Pro Stock class, A3 was also about deciding who would stand each side of Ratheisky on the podium. Having been one of the surprises of qualifying Simon Lauter could deliver on his impressive P2 qualifying position to take his Tamiya to victory ahead of Tim Benson and Max Mächler. This result would secure Lauter second overall with Max Mächler completing the Top 3. For reigning champion Alexandre Duchet, having qualified last on the grid the Frenchman would salvage 5th overall, a result he will be hoping becomes one of his two throw-outs.

While Mod, Pro Stock and Formula where all decided in the second A-Main, the newly introduced Infinity Masters Touring class went down to the wire.  With Christian Drießle winning A1 after a last minute mistake from Top Qualifier Thomas Oehler, it was Hungarian Miko Peter who took A2 ahead of Oehler and Drießle.  This left it a three way battle for the win in the closing leg but 3rd place starter Peter found his way to the front to become the first Masters class winner.  Joining him on the podium, the class open to drivers 40 years old or more, Drießle took second over Oehler thanks to his A1 win giving him the tie breaker.

Rheinard opens ETS season with first Infinity win

Marc Rheinard got his first full season of ETS as an Infinity driver off to the best possible start by taking the overall win in Austria with another clear win in A2, again finishing ahead of reigning champion Bruno Coelho. Wrapping up his long run as a Tamiya driver at the season opener last year before moving to newcomers Infinity for Round 2, today marks the German’s first ETS success with the team and the first for the team as a manufacturer.  Also claiming the TQ in Vienna taking all four qualifiers, Marc’s first win in almost two season’s sees the former champion go away with the maximum points available with him admitting himself he doesn’t know when he last had such a dominant weekend.

‘Couldn’t be better’, was Rheinard’s reaction after the race, his winning margin over Coelho in A2 1.7 seconds.  With his last ETS win coming at the Season #9 opener in the Czech Republic, the battle for the win going to A3 on that occasion, the 4-time World Champion continued, ‘everything worked this weekend both from my side and from the car. I have to thank Kotonori (Fujiwara) from Infinity and Mr. Jang from Muchmore for a great car and motor.  Everything was perfect and we had three cars in the final.’  On his A2 encounter, Rheinard said, ‘It was again like A1, I could make a gap on the first lap.  Viljami has no speed today which is good for me’.  He continued, ‘I knew Bruno was faster than me but I knew I had almost a 3-second which was too big a gap for even him to close so I could drive a safe race to the end’. Joking he doesn’t remember the last time he wrapped up an ETS win in A2, this his 15th victory of the championships, he said, ‘I could not have asked for a better way to start Infinity’s first full season of ETS and I hope we can continue in this way at Round 2’ – the second round taking place in home country at the start of February.

‘It was a little bit complicated’, was how Coelho summed up A2.  Starting behind Xray team-mate Marco Kaufmann, the pair would clash twice in the space on two corners.  He continued, ‘I made a good start and overtook Kaufmann at the end of the straight. I was already on his inside and he tried to close and I crashed him or should I say he crashed me.  Then I turned around and he was there again and we crashed again.  It was unfortunate because I felt very confident for this final and maybe I could have raced Marc because my car was really nice now’.  Setting the fastest lap, he added, ‘we are running a strange set-up to have it that the car runs straight and there was a big chance to fight with Marc but I lost too much time at the start’.  Aiming to salvage a second overall out of the weekend, he said, ‘It will be hard. Kutvanen already has a 3rd and he starts at the front but now I am very confident with the car so we will see’.

Managing to hang onto a P3 in A2 ahead of World Champion Ronald Volker, Viljami was clearly lost for words on his performance drop off today.  The Finn said, ‘I don’t now.  I really don’t know where my speed is gone from yesterday’.  The Awesomatix driver who qualified second continued, ‘it feels like I am just sliding everywhere and I don’t know what to do’.  Set to start at the front of the grid in A3 with Rheinard able to sit out the closing race, he concluded the way his car is working today he is just going to have to dig deep in terms of his driving if he is to salvage a podium finish.

Ratheisky continues reign in Pro Stock & Formula

Having stamped his authority in qualifying on both Pro Stock and Formula yesterday, Jan Ratheisky continued his reign over both classes this morning by taking victory in both A1 encounters.  The German took a very easy win in the Xray Pro Stock class after an early mistake from Tamiya driver Simon Lauter gave him the chance to break clear of the field.  With Lauters’ mistake unsettling the field, the Awesomatix of 5th place starter Max Mächler would find its way into second.  Yokomo’s Martin Hofer would work his way through the field from 8th on the grid to complete the Top 3 just ahead of reigning champion Alexandre Duchet who started last.

In the Scorpion Power System Formula encounter, Ratheisky didn’t have as easy a win with reigning champion David Ehrbar keeping him in his sights throughout.  Making his first A-Main appearance British driver Luke Lee would complete the Top 3, the finishing order the same as they lined up at the start.  Olivier Bultynck was the biggest mover getting 4th from 7th on the grid ahead of former champion Herbert Weber.  In the new Infinity Masters Touring class, a Pro Stock rules based class for drivers 40 plus years old, Top Qualifier Thomas Oehler looked all set to take the win until a mistake on the penultimate lap which allowed Christian Drießle through for the win with the Top 3 completed by Miko Peter.

Rheinard cruises to A1 win ahead of Coelho

Marc Rheinard cruised to an easy win in the opening A-Main at the ETS season opener in Vienna this morning, the Infinity driver leading home Bruno Coelho and Ronald Volker.  Top Qualifier for the race, the German got a break on the opening laps as the pack bunched up behind a slow starting Viljami Kutvanen who then came under attack from Marco Kaufmann.  While they battled, Rheinard further extended his lead while contact between Kutvanen and Kaufmann allowed fourth place starter Coelho to take up the chase but with the pair matching lap times Rheinard maintained the gap to win by 2.5 seconds.  With the Kutvanen/Kaufmann incident forcing the following pack to take evasive action, Volker would tag the rear of Alexander Hagberg resulting in an exchange of words afterwards.  Hagberg came off the worst his car jumping the boards and needing to be marshalled as Volker continued behind Kaufmann whom he would eventually get passed to salvage a 3rd from his P6 starting position.

Reacting to his win Rheinard said, ‘It was a perfect start.  For me it was important to get a good first lap and try to get a gap. Viljami struggled so that gave me a good lead but then when Bruno moved into second I thought I might have a problem because he had good pace in Q4 but we were the same speed. One lap he would be a 1/10 quicker then the next lap I would be a 1/10 quicker so I could control the race to the finish’. Reverting back to the tyres he used in Q3 for the opening A-Main he said despite them now having done 4 runs he plans to stick with that set again for A2 adding, ‘I will just try and get the same start as before’.

After struggling in qualifying, Coelho summed up the first final by saying, ‘that was good’.  The reigning champion continued, ‘ Marco and Viljami crashed together and I could overtake them both but because they had been battling at the beginning I lost too much time to Marc and knew once I was in second I couldn’t catch so I was just managing the race to the end’.  On his T4 performance the Xray driver said, ‘today it is more balanced but it is slower than yesterday’.  With challenging for the win always going to be difficult from 4th on the grid, the Portuguese driver believes it is going to be ‘almost impossible to catch Marc’.

Summing up his race Volker said, ‘the warm-up lap was terrible, I could not get rear grip but as the race went on it got better but I also adapted to the behaviour of the car having so much steering’.  The Yokomo driver continued, ‘I put a lot of pressure on Marco and finally could make a pass. It seems then I was faster than the guys ahead of me but P3 was the maximum I could do’.  Setting the fastest lap of the race on the penultimate lap, asked about the incident with Hagberg the World Champion said, ‘there was nothing I could have done different and after checking the video I am definitely not agreeing with Alex’s opinion. There was just a bunch up between Viljami, Marco and Bruno.  Giving his view of the incident, Hagberg, who would finish 9th, said, ‘I tried to take care not not hit the drivers in front but he drove straight into me.  I don’t know why he did but I came off worse than him and he continued’.  Behind Volker, Kaufmann would hold off Kutvonen for fourth while Olly Jefferies completed the Top 6.

A clean sweep for Rheinard as he TQs final qualifier

It was certainly Marc Rheinard’s day today in qualifying at the opening round of the ETS with the Infinity driver pulling off a clean sweep by topping all four qualifiers.  Having wrapped up his first overall TQ in over a season in the penultimate round of qualifying, the German didn’t have the same outright pace as before but swapped the lead with Bruno Coelho until the reigning champion went flying off the track.  In the end Rheinard would TQ by half a second from Alexander Hagberg with Viljami Kutvonen third quickest ahead of Akio Sobue.  Having set the fastest lap Coelho would cross the line with the fifth fastest time, the Portuguese driver still not happy with his car.  Changing set-up every round but with the car still loose in the rear he said the only conclusion they can come to is that the issue is tyre related adding that they had come across the issue previously during testing at the Hudy Arena.  In terms of the grid Coelho starts fourth behind Marco Kaufmann who finds himself the surprised best Xray qualifier.  The only driver to beat Coelho last season, Ronald Volker starts P6 behind Hagberg with the A-Main grid in Vienna completed by Christopher Krapp, Akio Sobue, Olly Jefferies and Yannic Prümper.

Ratheisky opens ETS season with Pro Stock & Formula TQs

Jan Ratheisky is the Top Qualifier for both Pro Stock and Formula at the opening round of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series in Austria.  The former champion of both classes and only driver to win two classes on the same weekend of an ETS, the Xray driver secured his pole position double in the third of the four rounds of qualifying.  Having taken the opening two qualifiers, the German continued his form into the second half of the day with a third TQ run in the penultimate qualifier to secure his first pole position in 8 races.  The last time he took an overall TQ was on the same weekend he wrapped up the Season #9 Formula championship title.  In Pro Stock it will be Simon Lauter who will be Ratheisky’s main challenger off the start line with the Tamiya driver taking the final qualifier from the second fastest heat to jump ahead of Mustafa Alp who will line up third.  Former DHI Cup Pro Stock champion Tim Benson ended qualifying fourth for Serpent with Awesomatix pairing Max Mächler and Olivier Bultynck completing the Top 6.  For reigning champion Alexandre Duchet, who had a fairytale ETS debut at the season opener last year, it has been a tough qualifying with the Frenchman just making the A-Main cut, qualifying his Xray 10th.

In the Scorpion Power System Formula class, Ratheisky made it a clean sweep of qualifying taking all four rounds.  Defending champion David Ehrbar was to be the closest challenger finishing P2 in three of the runs and the Serpent driver will be hoping he can do something about his rivals domination in tomorrow’s finals.  British driver Luke Lee secured himself third on the grid with his Xray ahead of Infinity team driver Jitse Miedema and Matej Dobnikar.  A Season #10 title contender Team Shepherd’s Olivier Bultynck will start 7th on the grid before the season finale winner Benson.

In the new Infinity Masters Touring class, TQ runs in Q3 & 4 will see Thomas Oehler as the first ever Top Qualifier with Q2 pace setter Christian Drießle lining up second.  Having taken the opening qualifier Hungarian driver Miko Peter will start third ahead of Austria’s Christian Stöckl.
