Rheinard wins Controversial A2

sun_brunomarc

Marc Rheinard has won a controversial second A-Main at the Yokomo Euro Touring Series in Luxembourg, the race determined by two key incidents the first of which means we will see the crowning of a new ETS champion for Season #9. A better first lap than A1, it was the second lap when the race would be turned on its head. With Top Qualifier Ronald Volker leading from Jilles Groskamp, as the pack exited the Laguna Seca section for a second time the reigning champion would get hit by Groskamp sending the Yokomo driver back to last as the Dutch continued as the new leader. Moments later the second incident would see Bruno Coelho attempt a pass on Rheinard, but there would be contact with the championship leader’s Xray flying off the track. No penalties called for either incident, Groskamp would lead from Rheinard before a spin from the Infinity driver allowed the Tamiya driver into a lead he would hold to the finish. With Coelho and Volker finishing 6th and 10th respectively it would be Xray’s Alexander Hagberg who would benefit most to finish 3rd behind Groskamp.

sun_rhegro

‘It was side by side in my opinion’, was Rheinard’s reaction to his incident with Coelho. Having got caught up in Volker’s first lap spin in A1, he continued, ‘It was a pretty ok start for all of us until Jilles & Ronald touched which gave me second coming onto the straight. Then Bruno tried to pass me on the inside at the end of the straight. I kept my line and we touched and for me it wasn’t my fault’. Taking the lead on the next lap after Groskamp spun his Xray he said once his former team-mate spun again having caught him back up ‘it was easy to the end’.

sun_cargros

‘I feel bad about the second final, I’m not sure what exactly happened’, said Groskamp afterwards. Trying to explain the incident with Volker he said, ‘He took a different line, I didn’t even take the opportunity to pass. It was a racing incident but I am angry with myself for what happened and I’m really sorry to Ronald’. Commenting the rest of the race, the former World Champion said, ‘I didn’t want to win the race after what happened, I drove pretty bad afterwards’. He continued, ‘I want the race to be decided fair & square in the third final’.

sun_ronald2

Visibly upset by the incident, Volker said, ‘This decided the championship, I’m out’. Having been chasing a sixth consecutive ETS Modified title, he continued, ‘after the trouble in A1 with tyres of course I didn’t drive 110% on the first lap but I felt my car was good to win but Jilles didn’t let me’. He added, ‘The line I drove is always the one I drive and he took me out badly from behind. Jilles is know for good sportsmanship so I feel very disappointed by this and the fact he yelled at me that it was my fault. It also frustrates me no stop & go was given. When it’s side by side I understand it’s difficult but this wasn’t even close to having any doubts over it’. Volker concluded, ‘it was definitely a tyre issue in A1 as my car felt great and my fastest lap proves this incident cost me the chance for the championship’.

sun_coelho4

Asked for his view of the race Coelho replied, ‘It easy to explain. I was taken out by Rheinard’. He continued, ‘We were fighting for 3rd and I was overtaking him in the inside. He had the curb on the right side but decided to turn left, maybe he had radio problems’. The Portuguese driver added, ‘the crash was so big I ended up in the middle of the straight and my race was done’.

sun_hagberg4

Having had a massive off at the end of the straight in A1 that ‘completely destroyed’ his car when a rear tyre came unglued, Hagberg was happy to finish third. Having to rebuild his car, the factory Xray driver said, ‘it felt weird’ in A2 adding he was ‘not 100% sure it’s fixed but I was still able to defend my position’. The European Champion added ‘I benefited from the drama up front and maybe I can do the same in the next one and finish up front’. Behind the Swede, Freddy Südhoff would again finish 4th. Having missed A1 due to work, local star Lucas Urbain would complete the Top 5 with his VBC from 7th on the grid.

sun_lars

In Pro Stock and Formula, there would be no dramas for the A1 winners as they repeated their earlier successes to sew up early the overall wins in Luxembourg. In the Xray supported touring car class Lars Hoppe claimed his first ETS win of the season with a perfect race from the TQ. David Ehrbar would do the same thing in the Serpent Formula class to also claim his first win of the season becoming only the second winner of Season #9, newly crowned & absent champion Jan Ratheisky having won the previous four encounters.

Groskamp takes A1 from Coelho

sun_groskamp2

Jilles Groskamp has won the opening A-Main at the penultimate round of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series in Luxembourg. Starting from second on the grid the Team Infinity driver took an early lead when Top Qualifier Ronald Volker did a 360 on the opening lap with Marc Rheinard falling victim to the out of shape Yokomo. With this allowing Bruno Coelho through to 2nd, the championship leader would close the gap on Groskamp in the closing laps but each time he looked set to mount a challenge he would make a small error. Getting by Volker on his third attempt, the arch rivals making contact each time, Rheinard would recover to finish 3rd while Volker would end up seventh.

sun_jilles

‘Same as last year, now I have to keep it together’, was Groskamp’s reaction to A1 referring to last year when he won the opening A-Main but then rolled in A2. The Dutch ace, who is running an Xray chassis in Luxembourg, said, ‘Unlike Ronald I had good grip from the start and when he spun I was able to get around him but Marc hit him giving me an early break’. Setting the fastest lap of the race on his 3rd lap, the 2012 World Champion continued, ‘I then just tried to maintain the gap to Bruno but I had one moment when I lost the rear so was careful after that’. His first ETS outing this season he added, ‘It was nice to bring it home’.

sun_carcoelho

‘Not so bad after starting from 4th’ was Coelho view on finishing second. The Xray driver continued, ‘there was trouble in front and I was able to pass Ronald & Marc but Jilles pulled away over the first four laps’. Describing his T4 as ‘a little loose in the beginning’ he said when it came in he was able to close but on both attempts to set-up a pass ‘(he) made mistakes and touched the curbs’. With his car ‘much better than yesterday’, last year’s race winner said they just need to ‘try to improve (the car) for the start of the race’.

sun_backrhe

Showing just why he is a four time World Champion with the passes he made on his recovery back through the field, Rheinard said, ‘my car felt pretty good but I was unlucky Ronald spun and my car rolled over. It was not his fault’. Making his way back to the the top, the Tamiya driver said “I knew Ronald’s car was not good but I still lost too much time fighting to get by him’. Eventually getting by on the front straight when they glanced off each other and Volker spun out, he said by ‘it was too late to catch the others’. Looking to A2 Rheinard said, ‘I’m pretty sure I can fight for the win if I can get a normal start’. Outside the Top 3, Freddy Sudhoff would take his Awesomatix to fourth ahead of Serpent’s Viktor Wilck and the Capricorn of Marc Fischer. For P5 starter Alexander Hagberg his race would end with a huge bang as his Xray failed to turn into the sweeper at the end of the main straight.

sun_ronald

‘I have no idea why but I had zero traction’, was how Volker summed up a difficult A1. The reigning champion added, ‘at a quick glance the car looks fine so I can only blame the set of tyres’. With no balance in the car he added, ‘It was bad for the entire race and was just drifting around’. With A-Main drivers having a new set of tyres at their disposal for each of the 3 mains, he said hopefully the next set will be good adding ‘if we do change anything on the car it will be only small as the car worked all the times before’.

sun_hoppe

In the Xray Pro Stock class there were no issues for the Top Qualifier as Lars Hoppe took a tone to tone victory. The big battle of the race would be for second which would go to the Tamiya of P4 starter Christian Donath who demoted Olivier Bultynck to third. In Formula, Serpent designer David Ehrbar took the win in a race that would see no change in the top 3 starting order with Jacques Libar 2nd and Mike Gosvig 3rd.

Volker claims vital TQ in Luxembourg

sat_voltq

Ronald Volker has claimed a vital TQ at the penultimate round of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series in Luxembourg tonight. Coming into the event third in the standings, the reigning champion needed the bonus championship point for the TQ and achieved it with a P2 behind Jilles Groskamp in Q3 which due to rain would become the final qualifier. With racers having to sit out most of the day due to the wet conditions the sun finally broke through the clouds at 18:00 allowing just enough time for a third round of qualifying with a number of drivers needing to put in a faultless run as 3 qualifiers meant that 2 counted for the grid. One such driver was championship leader Bruno Coelho, who after taking the opening qualifier yesterday pulled off in Q2 after struggling with a bad set of tyres. Managing only a P6 he will start fourth on the grid behind both his title rivals, Marc Rheinard securing third despite a bad final qualifier.

sat_volker2

‘This was really important for the championship’ was Volker’s reaction to notching up his 20th TQ at the ETS’ 5oth race. Commenting in the final qualifier, the original fourth scheduled qualifier scrapped due to a shortage of time following rain delays, the Yokomo driver said, ‘I shouldn’t have done a warm-up lap, the car was better on the warm-up lap than the opening laps and I lost it to Jilles as a result’. The German said, ‘Jilles is known as the Master of used tyres and he delivered what everyone expected’. He continued ‘For me it worked good because he’s starting second ahead of Marc and Bruno’. With many drivers unsure of what to expect in terms of track conditions Volker would make the switch from Protoform’s LTC-R to a Speed 6 which he said ‘was a good choice’. Describing his LRP powered BD7 as ‘feel(ing) very good to drive’ he is ‘confident for the mains’ and the only change he plans is a body change depending on track conditions in the morning.

sat_cargros

A driver who appears to be relishing the relaxed atmosphere within his Infinity team, Groskamp said his TQ run was ‘perfect’. Leaving his car unchanged having been very happy with it in last night’s Q2, he said he knew his car was good on second run tyres and the only thing he did was to extend the timing of his additive and tyre warmers. Keeping on eye on Volker he said he knew he could ‘cruise around at the end’. The Dutch driver, who challenged for the win in Luxembourg last year eventually finishing third, said ‘it’s really nice to start 2nd. I matched the pace of the others so I can fight for the win, it’s a really nice feeling’.

sat_marcrh

‘It started off really good but then in Laguna Seca I drove too much on the curbs and spun, then it was over’, was how Rheinard summed up Q2 adding, ‘3rd overall is ok but it could have been a TQ as well, referring to narrowly losing out on a TQ run in Q2 to Volker last night. He added, starting from pole would have ‘made for a very different outlook to the the race’ but the winner of the season opener, and third each race since, said, ‘I need to go for the win, it’s all or nothing tomorrow’.

sat_francibruno

‘Fourth is a little bit bad when you’re expecting at worst to start 2nd or 3rd’ was Coelho’s reaction to ending up P4, his lowest starting position this season. Making a set-up change to his Hobbywing powered T4 expecting conditions to be ‘super loose due to low traction’ the track ‘was not too bad’ and as a result of the changes his car was ‘too easy to drive and too slow’. With only one decent result going into Q3 he said he knew he had to do the 5-minutes with no mistakes and this too prevented him from pushing as he needed a Top 10 for the round to book his spot in the A-Main. Describing his starting position as ‘too much in the rear’, the Portuguese driver still intends on trying to win the title here in Luxembourg saying ‘for sure I fight for the win’.

sat_alexander

Also needing a good result from the final qualifier having done just a lap in Q1, Xray team-mate Alexander Hagberg also had to ‘drive safe to secure the A-Main’. One driver who did have a new set of tyres at his disposal, the Swede was also caught out by the better than expected track conditions. Expecting the track to be different to yesterday he said his ORCA powered T4 was ‘too aggressive to drive on new tyres’ and he had to drive with caution to ensure he got a good finish. Getting a P3 for the round this gives the European Champion 5th on the grid from where he said ‘there is a good chance of at least a podium’ adding ‘it’s going to be an exciting race with the Top 5 so close together (on pace)’.

sat_sudhoff

Completing the Top 6 on the grid ahead of local hero Lucas Urban, Freddy Sudhoff is another expecting intense finals saying, ‘it’s going to be exciting tomorrow’. Having rebuilt his car during the lengthy rain delay, the Awesomatix driver said his A800 was ‘on point (for Q3) but (he) totally messed up’. In Laguna Seca he would do a 360 saying his car ‘for some reason had too much power’ and after the spin he ‘took it easy’. With his car ‘easy to drive and fast’ he is looking forward to registering his best finish since returning to the Russian manufacturer. Competing the grid for Round 5 of the ETS will be Marc Fischer, marking a positive start to his Capricorn deal, Marco Kaufmann and Viktor Wilck.

sat_lars

In the Xray Pro Stock class Lars Hoppe didn’t even need to run today to secure the overall TQ as he had the perfect score from yesterday’s two qualifiers. With the ARC driver making a mistake early on his Q3, this would leave the Tamiya of Christian Donath to TQ the round to secure the German 4th on the grid behind Awesomatix pairing of Max Mächler (P3) and Olivier Bultynck (P2). In the Serpent Formula class David Ehrbar is Top Qualifier ahead of Luxembourg’s own Jacques Libar who took the third qualifier, with Mike Gosvig completing the Top 3.

Volker claims super close Q2 from Rheinard

fri_volker5

Ronald Volker claimed what could turn out to be crucial TQ run in a super close second qualifier at the ETS in Luxembourg. The Yokomo driver snatched the fastest time on the final lap from arch rival Marc Rheinard, the German power houses separated by just 0.039 of a second. Having taken the opening qualifier Bruno Coelho would struggle in Q2 eventually deciding to pull with a suspected bad set of tyres. With the championship leader having problems it would be Team Infinity driver Jilles Groskamp who would be the top Xray taking his example to third ahead of the factory car of Alexander Hagberg.

fri_backvoltq

‘That was a super exciting qualifier’ was a very pleased Volker’s reaction after taking the second round. Disappointed to miss out on Q1 by 1/10th of the second, he said, ‘the car felt great at the start but half way through it started to lose some steering and Marc was catching me. Then on the second to last lap I messed up and made a mistake at the chicane, it was then basically a heads up last lap’. Admitting beating Rheinard made the result that bit more satisfying, the 5-time reigning ETS champion said, ‘Its great to be back in the game after our difficulties in controlled practice’. The fastest time of the two qualifier and with rain forecast for tomorrow he added, ‘Nothing is won yet but this run was an important one if it comes down to fastest time. The pressure is now on Bruno to TQ the next one’. ‘Happy the day improved a lot’ he said ‘its down now to the weather and everyone is telling me it will be raining in the morning’.

fri_marc2nd

Rheinard was clearly frustrated to miss out on an important TQ round. Asked about his run he replied it was ‘just shit, no TQ’. Commenting on his car performance, the Tamiya driver who sits second in the points standings said it was ‘not bad’ but it did ‘a crazy thing and went full power into the corner’ causing him to overshot and lose over 1-second. Packing up his gear he felt the glitch may have been caused by his receiver.

fri_groskamp4

‘I can be really happy to to finish just .6 off of Ronald and Marc, they were really killing it’. The Dutch driver who was on the podium in Luxembourg last year said his Orion powered T4 had a little understeer compared to before but he was still ‘super close’ adding ‘the pace is there’. Hoping it stays dry tomorrow so he can get one more round in, he believe with most drivers having used up their 2-sets of allocated Volante tyres he will be in good shape as his car has good pace on used rubber. ‘Super happy with how the day went’, this being his first electric event as an Infinity team driver, he concluded ‘there is a good vibe in the team and I feel very relaxed’.

fri_alexander

Having pulled off on the opening lap of Q1 after a mistake so as to save his tyres, Hagberg said his ORCA powered T4 was ‘pretty good after a small set-up change’. With no time for the first round he said he had to do a safe run and with a P4 now he will ‘push for a higher result tomorrow’. With still a brand new set of tyres at his disposal, the Swede could be well positioned should a dry round be possible. For team-mate Coelho Q2 would be frustrating. Having made no changes to his car, the Portuguese star said he had ‘zero traction’. Describing it as ‘like driving on ice’, he said even under braking the car was locking wheels and he can only put it down to bad tyres.

fri_shellsudhy

Backing up his P6 in Q1 with a P5 in the days closing qualifier, Freddy Sudhoff said the run was ‘better’. Making a set-up change, the factory Awesomatix driver said this ‘improved the car a lot’ but the German said the cooler conditions also suited the A800 more. Overall a cleaner run than Q1, he said he ‘had one moment at the end of the straight when (he) hit the curb but nothing bad happened’. With most drivers now on used tyres for the scheduled 2 remaining qualifiers, Sudhoff said he is ‘looking forward to see how everyone runs on used tyres’ adding ‘I just hope it stays dry now to find out’.

fri_lucas3

Completing the Top 6 and therefore securing a place in the A-Main for what is his home race, French VBC driver Lucas Urbain said ‘At least I got the job done. It was so crazy tight, 5th to 13th was covered by just two seconds’. After a strong start to the qualifier he said ‘there was too much of a drop in the car’. Having to work in the morning until midday he is one driver who wouldn’t mind waking to rain tomorrow. Behind Urbain, Singapore’s Nicholas Lee got a P8 for the round followed by Capricorn’s Kyle Branson, Awesomatix’ Olivier Bultynck and the VBC of Yannic Prumper.

fri_lars

In Pro Stock Lars Hoppe continued his reign of the class as the qualifying top seed made it 2 out of 2 taking Q2 ahead of Bultynck and Xray’s Tom Krägefski. In Formula David Ehrbar recovered from a mistake to also make it two from two, the Serpent driver’s closest challenger being Luxembourg’s own Jacques Libar driving a Roche.

Coelho from Volker in Q1

fri_brunoo

Bruno Coelho has TQ’d the opening round of qualifying at the Yokomo Euro Touring Series in Luxembourg. The championship leader topped the times by just 0.135 of a second from reigning champion Ronald Volker with this year’s other title contender Marc Rheinard completing the Top 3. For Rheinard it initially looked like his opening qualifier would amount to nothing as his transponder failed to register once the qualifier started but in a sporting gesture from his rivals in the top heat they agreed to allow a manual correction of the result to reflect his P3 position on the track when he crossed the finish line.

fri_carcoe

‘A perfect run’ was how Coelho summed up Q1. Able to wrap up his first ETS title this weekend if he can win on Sunday, he said ‘I pushed first few laps and then just managed my lead. In the end it was a bit short to Volker but we got the TQ so its good’. Commenting on his Hobbywing powered T4, he said ‘we made a change to the car which made it more stable and it was still fast. It was more comfortable to drive than in practice’. With a second qualifier scheduled for tonight due to rain forecast for the morning, Coelho plans to run everything as is despite the expected cooler conditions.

fri_drivronald

Reacting to the qualifier Volker said, ‘I shouldn’t be disappointed, but I am because it was .1 of a second and my need to TQ this weekend’. Needing a TQ to keep his title hopes alive, the Yokomo driver used his second car from yesterday for Q1 saying ‘it was more stable’. Making small changes in the direction of team-mate Hayato Matsuzaki’s set-up this made the ‘balance much better’. Unfortunately having ended up P4 in seeding Matsuzaki would roll his BD7 on the first lap as he came on to the straight leaving him with P21 for the round. ‘A clean run’ Volker feels there was ‘not much missing from getting the TQ’ and for Q2 they will make small changes to try get more steering from his LRP powered DB7.

fri_rheinard3

‘Was pretty ok but the traction felt less’ was how Rheinard described Q1. Feeling he had ‘the same pace as Bruno at the beginning’ he said his transponder issue put him off a little. Not hearing his name being called in the running order, while he continued he would make a mistake that cost him around 1-second adding ‘otherwise it was pretty close’. Asked about the transponder issue he said, ‘A big thanks to the other drivers for showing great sportsmanship and allowing me to be given a result. The transponder registered in the warm-up and was blinking after the race but I will change it for Q2’.

fri_weightgros

Setting the fourth fastest time Jilles Groskamp felt he got caught out by two tyre related issues. Having taken his car directly from his pits to the track in practice he said having to go through scrutiny first for qualifying he got caught out by having no battery in his tyre warmers. The Team Infinity driver said he also discovered that his tyre cutter was damaged and this affected the tyre resulting in two slow opening laps with the tyre coming in very late. Once he got into his rhythm he said the consistency in the end was good adding ‘I’m happy with P4 as fourth in this field is a good start and to be 1.5 behind Bruno is not bad.’ Looking to Q2, the 2012 World Champion said ‘I’ll make sure I have a battery in my tyre warmer’.

fri_lucas

‘I don’t know whether to be sad or happy’, was Lucas Urbain’s reaction after he posted the fifth fastest time. The VBC team driver continued, ‘I made a really good start, I was leading but then I had the classic chicane spin’. ‘There is a bump there but that is normally fine so I don’t know if I got nervous or just used too much throttle. Anyway for my own standard P5 is good’. One driver happy with the addition of Q2 to today’s schedule, the popular French racer has to work until lunchtime tomorrow having been unable to get the time off and with rain scheduled for the morning it could all work in his favour.

fri_sudhoff5

Completing the Top 6 Freddy Sudhoff said it was ‘a good start to the event’. With his team-mate Viljami Kutvonen suffering a shutdown before the end of his Q1 run, the Awesomatix the driver said in the end he messed up himself. Running wide twice the German said ‘they cost me two spots but overall P6 is good’. Describing his A800 as ‘a little too easy to drive’ he will make a roll centre change for Q2.

fri_marcfischer

Piping his old team-mate Viktor Wilck to P7, new Capricorn signing Marc Fischer said the run ‘was ok but just not in the beginning’. Starting ahead of Sudhoff he said ‘over the first 4 to 5 laps Freddy was catching’ and while the car was ok after that he will make changes for Q2. Considering a softer swaybar he will also ‘try a softer rear spring for more bite at the start’.

fri_carhoppe

In the Xray Pro Stock class it would also be the top seed who would take the opening qualifier as Lars Hoppe topped the times. The German ARC driver who finished on the podium here two years ago was fastest from Awesomatix’ Max Mächler with Olivier Bultynck completing the Top 3. In Formula Bultynck would get a P2 with David Ehrbar’s Serpent proving to be quickest.

Final practice sees big improvement for Rheinard

fri_marc2

There was a big improvement from Marc Rheinard in the final practice at ETS Luxembourg with the Tamiya driver improving from 10th the 2nd fastest as many drivers failed to better their opening timed practice times. Fastest for the second round, Rheinard got to within 4/10ths of Bruno Coelho’s earlier time, the Xray driver remaining the top seed for qualifying which gets underway this evening. With Rheinard demoting Jilles Groskamp who failed to better his time back to third, the third of the title contenders Ronald Volker would find himself demoted to P6 as his Yokomo team-mate Hayato Matsuzaki managed to get three laps together to go fourth fastest ahead of Lucas Urbain.

fri_carrhein

With 6 of the Top 10 failing to improve their earlier times, Rheinard said his Tamiya was ‘good again’ after ‘some shock changes’. Asked if his TRF419X was better, the German replied ‘its not as bad as before’ adding ‘it’s still hard to drive’. Describing it as ‘a little loose’ this made it ‘scary to drive’ but with a quick rain shower just after the final practice was completed he said, ‘now (he had) no idea what track will be like and for now I will stay the same’. In addition to Rheinard’s improvement it would also a positive round for his World Champion team-mate Naoto Matsukura. A driver who has lacked any consistent form since winning his Touring Car title 2-years ago, the Japanese driver managed a P8 time to put himself in the top heat for qualifying albeit being 1-second off Coelho.

fri_coelho

Summing up his final practice, in which he was 1/2 a second slower, Coelho said, ‘we tried something different on the car and they were not good so we will go back’. The championship leader added, ‘also the track was slower and not so good now’. Asked if he felt he had a good car for qualifying, the Portuguese driver replied, ‘for sure it will be difficult, its not so easy to do 5-minutes on this track but you have to choose the fast or easy, slow, set-up. I will go with the fast option for now’.

fri_groskamp

3/10ths slower second time round Groskamp said, ‘I think the track is slower than before but for me its still ok’. While the Dutch ace said it could be due to a change in track conditions he feels it could also be to do with the hand out additive. Having used his own shop bought additive in the morning practice he said once he switch to the same brand additive on the sauce table the car feels slower’. The Team Infinity driver said while the Xray chassis he has opted for on his first ETS outing with the for now nitro focused team ‘feels a little loose at the beginning it is still consistent’. For tonight’s opening qualifier, he said he is ‘looking forward to Q1 to see how everyone’s 5-minute pace is’, adding ‘Volker looks to have a good pace over 5-minutes’.

fri_hayato

Former 2WD Offroad World Champion Matsuzaki put his improvement down to the fact he was starting to finally drive his Yokomo like a touring car and not a drift car. Having spent the last 2-weeks in Europe attending the RC Drift World Championships, he said with all the teams trying different small changes each run the change he made for the final practice brought ‘good results’. Happy with is BD7 for qualifying he said he needs more practice for 5-minutes and to drive more consistent.

fri_urbain

‘So so’ was how Urbain summed up his latest run. The French VBC driver said a spin on his second lap meaning his 3-laps were not good but added ‘my pace was no good anyway’. Describing his VBC as having ‘felt different’, he said he is not sure whether there were drops of rain during the run. Having made only ‘minor tweaks’ to his D08 for the round he said ‘I hope it was the track and not the car’. On his P5 he said it was ‘much better than usual but there is more in the car’. Starting the first qualifier directly in front of Volker, he said, ‘Its a shame I’m in front of Ronald as he will be on my tail’.

fri_backronald

‘We didn’t improve the car at the beginning, it was worse, the car was too loose’, was Volker’s reaction after they tried a different tyre prep. The reigning champion continued, ‘mid run it was OK but I need better confidence in the car for the beginning’. Impressed by his team-mate’s improvement he said, ‘Hayato showed he is very quick and the car is good and we may follow in his set-up direction. Now we are running different set-ups’.

fri_hoppe

In the Xray Pro Stock class, outgoing champion Marek Cerny opting to race Modified this weekend and championship leader Jan Rathiesky unable to attend due to a shoulder injury, it was ARC’s Lars Hoppe who would top the times from local driver Dirk Rischard and Xray’s Mike Gosvig, the Dane also taking that position in Formula. In the Serpent Formula class Roche Jacques Libar was quickest ahead of Serpent’s David Ehrbar.

Coelho leads way in 1st timed practice at ETS Luxembourg

fri_coelho2

Bruno Coelho has set the pace in the first of the two timed practices at the penultimate round of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series in Luxembourg. Last year’s race winner posted the fastest 3-laps ahead of Jilles Groskamp stretching his advantage over the Dutch driver, the pair more evenly match in the morning’s untimed practice. Behind them it was local hero Lucas Urbain who would complete the Top 3 with a time 1/1000th of a second faster than defending champion Ronald Volker. A crucial weekend in the three way title battle, it wasn’t a great start to the weekend for Marc Rheinard as he found himself only 10th fastest over 1.4-seconds off points leader Coelho.

fri_bruno

‘Very good’ was how Coelho summed up TP1 adding ‘we improved a little the car making it more stable’. The Xray driver who claimed his first ever ETS win at Mini Circuit “Ville de Luxembourg” said, ‘the car is there, its just down to small things now’. Comparing the practice to the untimed morning practice, the Portuguese ace said ‘I think it was slower and there was more wind which made the rear of the car feel strange at times’. Comparing his lap times he said while his ‘three laps (were the) same as the morning’, the higher temperature meant the pace ‘drops a lot after 5-laps’.

fri_paintgros

Also at the controls of a Xray this weekend Team Infinity’s Groskamp summed up his TP1 with ‘not bad but Bruno a lot faster now’. He continued ‘the track changed for sure but I also changed the set-up a little and it didn’t feel as good as before’. 4/10ths off Coelho over 3-laps, the Dutch driver who claimed his first European Championship title in Luxembourg in 2009, said ‘compared to everyone else my pace is the same as the morning its just Bruno who has stepped things up’. He concluded the ‘first three laps are rocket but my car is good for the whole run so I’m pretty happy’.

‘It’s ok, it’s building up nicely’ was Urbain’s reaction to his P3 time. The French driver, for whom this is his local track, added ‘Bruno is really fast now and I felt my car better in the 1st practice’. With ‘too much understeer he said while the first few laps are good his D08 then suffers too much of a drop off in pace. Having adjusted the weight distribution for TP1, moving more weight to the rear of the car, he will go back as this just ‘cooked the rear tyres quicker’.

Needing to deny Coelho the win on Sunday to have any chance of making it six ETS titles in a row, Volker said he ‘didn’t focus too much on 3-laps’. Describing his BD7 as ‘good throughout the run’, the German added it was ‘very stable’. Admitting if it had been a qualifier such was Coelho’s pace over the opening three laps it would have been hard to recover the time and he will ‘try to make sure not to lose so much time at the beginning’. Planning to ‘make some changes for the final practice, he needs to discuss his options first with his engineer.

Having made his first A-Main appearance in some time at the previous round in Italy, Viktor Wilck would post the 5th fastest time. The Serpent driver was much happier with his 4-X after reverting back to his own set-up. Running that set-up in open practice yesterday for the first run today he copied the set-up of the car’s designer David Ehrbar but making the car ‘completely different’ he was quick to switch back to his own ideas. Describing the car as being ‘pretty OK’ for TP1 he said he just needs to fine tune it to ‘make it a little more edgy’.

Having just announced a deal to drive for Capricorn, Marc Fischer got that new partnership off to a positive start as he completed the Top 6 just behind his former team-mate. Having had little time with his new car, in TP1 the German said he finally found his way with it. Moving the front & rear shocks to a lay down position he said the car was now ‘more easy to drive’. Also rising the rear diff, he can ‘now go closer to the limit’ were as before if he went off the line it was ‘undriveable’. For TP2, he will focus on getting more corner speed through the sweeper.

The lead Awesomatix after the first timed practice, Freddy Sudhoff said, ‘so far so good, our second race that we show the car is good on asphalt’. Having been trying different set-ups each run, the German said ‘so far we have too much steering or not enough and we need to find an in between’. He added ‘with new tyres our hot laps are not that quick but we are good for 5-minute qualifying so we should be fine’. Runner-up to Coelho in Italy, Sudhoff’s team-mate Viljami Kutvonen was 16th fastest saying ‘I’m struggling a little bit’. The Finn added ‘Freddy’s car is quite good and mine feels ok but its missing something’.

Behind Sudhoff, Alexander Hagberg was P8 followed by Nicolas Lee and Rheinard. Rheinard who was in the top heat while Coelho was in the second fastest, said ‘seems our heat was a little slower but anyway we are not fast enough’. The Tamiya driver said his TRF419X was ‘better the round before’ adding ‘I guess track conditions change’. For the final practice the 4-time World Champion will try a different set-up in the hope of closing, by his standards, the considerable gap to both Coelho and Volker, his two title rivals.

fri_trackfish

Track Name – Mini Circuit “Ville de Luxembourg”
Country – Luxembourg
Location – Luxembourg City
Host – Luxembourg Model Car Club (LMCC)
Surface – Asphalt
Direction – Anti-clockwise
No. of ETS Races hosted – 2 (2014 & 2015)

The Euro Touring Series returns to what for many racers is Europe’s best track, Mini Circuit “Ville de Luxembourg”. The third year the ETS has brought the best electric touring car drivers from around the world to this small country of just 1/2 a million people. Built in 1999 and 310 metres long, it is the track’s Laguna Seca corkscrew style corner which has an elevation of approximately 2-metres that makes it a circuit revered by racers across the World. Another feature of the track, which many top racers describe as a ‘drivers track’, is a 10 degree banked corner at the end of the main straight.

A driver who claimed his first ever ETS race win at the track last year, Bruno Coelho described the track as ‘quite difficult’. Commenting on the tracks signature cork screw section he added, ‘I really like it but it’s super difficult to be fast through it’. With ‘many points (around the track) to gain time’, he said its a track where ‘the driver is a bigger factor’ in terms of a getting a quick lap time. Another challenge of the track are bumps which the Xray driver said ‘you need to learn where they are so you can adjust your lines to avoid them’.
