Coelho again in Q2

sat_brunoTQ2

The second round of qualifying at the Yokomo Euro Touring Series in Germany was a repeat of Q1 as Xray again topped the time sheets with Bruno Coelho fastest ahead of team-mate Alexander Hagberg. Behind the Xrays it was Yokomo who provided the greatest challenge with Yannic Prumper completing the Top 3 ahead of reigning Champion Ronald Volker.  For championship leader and 2015 event winner Marc Rheinard, the round would again only net a P6 with the German needing to turn things around for the final two qualifiers.

sat_bodybruno

Getting his T4 up on two wheels at the beginning of the heat when he hit the curbing, Coelho said he was ‘a little lucky not to flip’ but other than that it was a ‘good run’.  Posting the fastest lap on his way to the only 23-lap run, the Portuguese  said small changes made to his set-up after Q1 left it ‘almost the same’.  While the car was again ‘really good’, as highlighted by his one & a half second advantage over Hagberg, for Q3 he said ‘we will try a few more things for the next one’.

sat_hagberg

Not happy with his driving in Q1, Hagberg described the second qualifier as ‘very good’.  Although he would make a mistake on lap 5, saying ‘I guess I was trying too hard’, he was particularly happy that he was able to recover the 1-second lost.  With his lap times dropping off towards the end of the 5-minutes, the 2014 event winner will make some changes to his T4 set-up to try and find more pace at the end.

sat_yannic

Describing his BD7 as ‘super good at the beginning’, Prumper said  ‘I could keep up with the Xrays but then they were just gone’.  Losing steering over the run, the German said his car was ‘too soft’ leading to ‘no corner speed’ and for Q3 he will change his shock set-up.

sat_backvolker

‘Frustrated’ was how Prumper’s team-mate Volker summed up his Q2.  A two time winner in Muelheim-Kaerlich, the German said he was in the fight for a P2 but then spun his LRP powered BD7 with 3-laps to go.  Admitting to ‘being a bit off the pace to Xray’, he said to get second would have been a good result.  Changing his set-up for the heat, he said while they improved the car ‘so did the others’.  Feeling they are still in the hunt against Xray he will make further set-up changes for the penultimate qualifier.

sat_kutvonen

Feeling he had good pace in the opening qualifier but spinning his Awesomatix three times on his way to a P10, a chassis change would see Viljami Kutvonen set the fifth fastest time in Q2.  Starting out with a carbon chassis on his A800 he said switching to aluminium made the car ‘much better’.  Happy with how quickly he has been able to find a ‘good base set-up’ given the 2-minutes of practice drivers got in the good carpet, he said he will now tweak this to try and get more steering.

sat_carrhe

Traction rolling on his warm-up laps, Rheinard said he had ‘too much grip’.  Having changed car for Q2, he said the roll lead him to drive a conservative heat but still he managed to crash hitting the board at the end of the straight which  caused his servo to move.  Running in front of Prumper on the timing screens for a time, he will try harder swaybars for the third qualifier.  Behind Rheinard, his TRF team-mate Akio Sobue set the 7th fastest time followed by the Serpent of Viktor Wilck, Xray’s
Dionys Stadler and the Schumacher of British National Champion Elliott Harper.

Coelho heads Xray 1-2 in Q1

sat_coelho2

Bruno Coelho led an Xray 1-2 this morning at the Yokomo Euro Touring Series in Germany, TQ’ing the opening qualifier ahead of team-mate Alexander Hagberg.  Having topped the times in practice yesterday, the Round 1 podium finisher would be 1.3-sec faster than Hagberg with reigning ETS Champion Ronald Volker completing the Top 3 a further 1.3-sec off the pace.  Winner of the Muelheim-Kaerlich encounter last year, Marc Rheinard would post only the 6th fastest time with his World Champion TRF team-mate Naoto Matsukura, who was second in practice, retiring from the qualifier with a bad handling car.

sat_bruno

‘Everything was good, no mistakes. I just tried to drive a safe round and I think it was good’, was Coelho’s reaction to his TQ run. |Describing his Hobbywing powered T4 as ‘really good’, the  22-year-old added it was ‘missing a little steering in slow corners’ and he will make a small set-up change ‘to improve this point’ for Q2.

sat_namehagberg

Winner of the event two years ago with a dominant performance, Hagberg said, ‘I wasn’t driving too well and had two mistakes.  Without these I think it could have been a TQ run’.  Despite setting the fastest lap of the qualifier, the Swede also felt his ORCA powered T4 was a little lacking in corner speed.  Having changed his set-up when drivers were faced with running on the ‘old carpet’, he said when the new carpet was laid down while he changed the set-up he ‘didn’t go completely back’ to the set-up he ran in pre-event testing at the Hudy Arena and he will for Q2 and go with harder shock springs.

sat_volker

Tapping the boards at the end of the straight and suffering  ‘a surprise traction roll’ four laps later, Volker said considering this ‘finishing 3rd was OK’.  Feeling he only had the potential to get a P2 even with a clean round, the Yokomo driver said ‘we need to find something that give me a better feeling with the car if we are to catch Bruno’.  Not winning the season opener for the first time in his 5-year reign as the ETS Champion, Rheinard beating him in Hrotovice, Volker said ‘Marc ended up behind me so it could have been a worse start to qualifying but hopefully in Q2 we can challenge for a TQ run’.

sat_akio

Top Tamiya for the round, Akio Sobue would post the 4th fastest time.  The reigning Japanese Champion, who enjoyed a podium finish in Austria last season, said other than a ‘small mistake’ it was a ‘good’ run.  His first carpet ETS outing, the 22-year-old said on the new carpet he likes the track layout but looking for more steering from his TRF419 he will make a small change as he continues to get a proper feel for the carpet, having only had 2-minutes practice on the good carpet yesterday.  Team-mate Matsukura, whom he beat to the 2015 Japanese National title, said his Tamiya had ‘maximum high traction’ and he ‘couldn’t drive it’.  Saying ‘I need understeer’, he will change to a harder shock set-up and lower the upper arms.

sat_carprumper

‘Solid’ was how Yannic Prumper summed up his P5 time.  The Yokomo driver, who has been on the podium at the German round for the last three years, said he drove ‘too aggressive at the start’ and with his BD7 ‘a little tricky at the chicane’ this resulted in two mistakes.  As he ‘got used to the car being loose’ he said he was able to put in a solid run but planning a set-up change he is hopeful of a stronger showing second time round.

sat_rheinard3

‘That was not what I hoped for’ was Rheinard’s reaction to a disappointing Q1, the championship leader adding his car was ‘just not fast enough and difficult to drive’.  Leading away the heat and having to open up for Volker, Coelho and Hagberg, he said with the ‘pace just not there’ he will switch car for Q2.  With Tamiya Racing Factory team-manager Takayuki Kono bringing a new car from Japan for the event Rheinard, who ran his Hrotovice winning car in Q1, said, ‘this has some of Kono’s own ideas on it so I will try this’.  Behind Rheinard Olly Jefferies, who made his ETS A-Main debut at Round 1, would set the 7th fastest time followed by Xray team-mate Marco Kaufmann with the VBC of Lucas Urbain and Awesomatix of Viljami Kutvonen rounding out the Top 10.

Carpet issues force track rebuild at ETS

fri_trackfish

Having attracted a record 440 plus entries made up of some 360 drivers from around the World, Round 2 of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series threw up an unexpected drama this morning during practice as the copy of the 2015 layout through up a hidden problem. Ordering their renowned ‘Black ETS Carpet’, as is done every round, it would transpire that in error a different carpet was delivered to the Muelheim-Kaerlich venue. With the carpet fluffing up and having low traction, the record Formula entry in particular struggling to get their cars to work, the ETS organisers have made the decision to resurface the track with the correct carpet.

fri_carfluff

With the only hint during the build that there was to be an issue was that once rolled out the carpet had a plastic protective sheeting which was removed.  A massive under taking to rebuild the track during the World biggest race, on announcing the decision drivers gave a round of applause.  With the supplier a three hour drive away, practice will continue on the old carpet, until the carpet arrives after which a track crew of around 20 staff will set about doing a full track rebuild.  This is expected to take around 2-3 hours.  With the surface change and new carpet needing to be broken in, once the rebuild is complete, the layout staying the same, drivers will get a 2-minute practice round before qualifying getting underway, Formula 1 now the only class that will run a qualifier today due to the revised schedule.

fri_masami

Another , but somewhat smaller issue to face the organisers this morning was the highly anticipated ETS debut of Masami Hirosaka.  Set to run in Formula this morning, it turns out the 14-time World Champion is still on his travels from Japan after his passport expiry date was found to be too short to meet European entry requirements. Having to leave Narita airport and go get an emergency passport issued, he is now on his way but will now not land in Germany until tonight.  Coming out of retirement for the race, the announcement of his entry generating a huge reaction, Masami will now go in at the deep end with his first lap of the track set to be in the second round of qualifying.

Rheinard targets repeat win at ETS Germany

ETS_Rheinard

Having made the perfect start to Season #9 of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series with the TQ and win in the Czech Republic, Marc Rheinard will be targeting a repeat performance as the championship travels to Germany this weekend (5-7 February). Attracting a record 440 plus entries, Round 2 takes place in Muelheim-Kaerlich where the Tamiya driver has enjoyed two key successes in the past 12-months.  Last season the 4-time onroad World Champion ended a 5-year drought of ETS victories on carpet at the event and having claimed his first ever Euro Offroad Series win at the same venue just last weekend, the ETS’ most winning driver’s confidence couldn’t be higher.  Racking up his 13th ETS win in Hrotovice, Rheinard’s biggest competition is again set to come from Yokomo in reigning champion Ronald Volker and Xray in both Bruno Coelho & 2014 Mulheim winner Alexander Hagberg.

The first time in 6 seasons that he will arrive at the second round not leading the championship, Volker is ready to resume control of the championship and get his quest for a sixth consecutive title on target. Finishing second to Rheinard at Round 1 back in December, winning the opening A-Main with a great last lap pass on his arch rival, Volker believes having kicked off 2016 with a dominant victory at the DHI Cup that they have found what they lacked.  Three years since Yokomo has won the important German round, Volker’s team-mates Yannick Prumper, who has been a podium finisher at the event the last three years, and Meen Vejrak will also be aiming to be in the mix to give the champion manufacturer  it’s first win of their 2015/2016 campaign.

Having turned around his 2014 ETS debut performance at Hrotovice, when he just scrapped into the A-Main, to being in contention on his second attempt, Coelho is determined to add a first carpet win to his increasingly impressive CV.  Winner of the closing two rounds of last season’s championship on asphalt, the Portuguese star took over the lead of the EOS title race with his second 4WD win of the season in Muelheim last weekend, the location a good proving ground for Xray.  Hagberg was dominant 2-years ago topping all four qualifiers and wrapping up the win in A2.  The Swede hasn’t won an ETS encounter since but coming into the event fresh from victory at the Snowbirds in the US that could be about to change.

With travel restrictions forcing him to miss the season opener, reigning World Champion Naoto Matsukura returns for Round 2.  The Japanese driver’s first visit to the venue, it will also be his first ETS carpet outing with Tamiya and he would very much like to mark the occasion with a first win of the championship, his previous outings not even netting him a podium finish.  With the event last year marking his final outing with Kyosho, TRF team-mate Christopher Krapp will be hoping for a better Round 2 having missed out on the A-Main at the season opener.  A race where he has been on the podium, the popular former ETS race winner would like to mark his first full season with Tamiya with a strong showing.

One driver who could provide a surprise this weekend is Viljami Kutvonen.  While the Awesomatix lead driver made the A-Main in Czech, the Finn was disappointed with his 10th place finish.  The only one to challenge Volker at the DHI Cup, he is out to make amends and show the true potential of the new belt drive A800.  Kutvonen’s former Awesomatix team-mate Freddy Sudhoff will lead the HB charge this weekend. The German who had a character building first round will be joined by team-mate JJ Wang, the American/Chinese driver making his ETS carpet debut.

In the Xray Pro Stock and Serpent Formula class it is the same driver that the combined 249 entries of the two classes will be out to beat.  Double Top Qualifier and race winner at Round 1, the reigning Formula Champion Jan Ratheisky fresh from success at the Snowbirds will get the opportunity to race against one of the greatest legends of the sport.  Coming out of retirement for the event, 14 time World Champion Masami Hirosaka will make his ETS debut when he races in Formula at the controls of a Yokomo YR-10.  In Pro Stock, Ratheisky’s main challenge will come from his Xray team-mate & reigning champion Marek Cerny.  The Czech driver has been Top Qualifier and race winner in Germany for the past 2-years.

Masami to come out of retirement for ETS debut

Masami to come out of retirement for ETS debut

Legend of the sport Masami Hirosaka is to come out of international racing retirement to make his debut in the World famous Yokomo Euro Touring Series.  Having officially retired from top flight competition after the 2008 Touring Car World Championships in Thailand, the same year the first season of ETS was completed, the 14-time World Champion will compete in the German round in two weeks time (Feb 5-7).  Having last raced in Europe during the 2006 World Championships in Italy, the multiple onroad & offroad World Champion will be one of 8 World Champions who make up the record entry in Muelheim-Kaerlich.

Having spent recent years giving something back to the sport through his work as a TV personality and as a JMRCA official, being the Assistant Race Director of last October’s 1:10 Offroad World Championship at the Yatabe Arena in Japan, Masami’s return to competition will come at the controls of a Formula car.  A class that is enjoying strong growth within the ETS and around the world, the second race of Season #9 attracting 130 entries, he will race a Yokomo YR-10 in his signature green, pink & white colour scheme.

Rheinard opens new ETS season with Czech win

sun_marcwinner

Marc Rheinard has won the opening round of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series in the Czech Republic.  The Tamiya driver claimed the victory with a win in the third A-Main over Ronald Volker and Bruno Coelho, that also being the final order they would step on the podium in Hrotovice.  After the thrilling last lap finish to A1, in which reigning champion Volker snatched the win from the Top Qualifier, A2 & 3 would be more straight forward for Rheinard despite Volker’s best efforts.  An event that has been won each season by the champion elect, the win is a major boost for Rheinard and Tamiya in their ongoing quest to win back the title. Last winning the race in 2009/10, the race has since been the reign of Volker & Yokomo in their run of five consecutive championship titles. With the bonus point for TQ and his 14th ETS win, Rheinard travels to Round 2 in German in February, where he took his only win last year, with maximum Championship points.

sun_finrhe2

‘Last year I TQ’d but only finished 4th, this year got the TQ & win so it couldn’t be a better start to the season’, was Rheinard’s reaction to his first big win since winning last year’s Reedy Race.  Asked about the importance of the race in terms of it always having been won by that season’s champion he replied with a smile ‘so we need to keep it going’.  Commenting on A3, he said ‘it started good and (he) got small gap again, then when Ronald had a small crash I hoped Bruno would hold onto second but Ronald pushed even harder.  Then I had one silly lap and he was able to close but luckily he crashed again’.  Commenting on the performance of his Much More powered TRF419 which set the fastest lap of A3, the 4-time World Champion said, ‘It looks like we are going in the right direction but we still have more work to do to’.

sun_finronald

‘One of the better second place finishes I have had’, that was how Volker summed up his weekend.  He continued ‘it was clear I always lose time at the beginning to Marc and always have to fight back.  I was catching him but then lost it in the chicane.  While I was still not out of the win this was probably the moment that cost us the win’.  Falling behind Coelho as a result of a roll over coming onto the straight as the race reached the final minute, he again complimented his rival’s ‘great sportmanship’ as the Portuguese ace didn’t force a block on his pass to retake position on the next lap.  The debut for the BD7 2016, Volker said ‘the car was always fast over the weekend but the balance and rear end traction hurt us in terms of getting the TQ and win and is something we need to work on but overall it is a step up on the old car and there is a lot more to come from all the team’.

sun_carcoe

Making his ETS debut at this event last year when he qualified 8th and finished 6th, Coelho was happy to claim his first podium finish on carpet.  The Offroad World Champion’s goal going into A3 was to secure 3rd overall. He said ‘that is why I opened up for Volker and let him retake me as it would have made no difference to my final position but if we crashed Alex (Hagberg) could have passed us and finish third (overall).’  Admitting asphalt is a surface he is stronger on, backed up by the fact he won the final two races of Season #8 on that surface, he said he needs to make the best result possible on carpet.  With it ‘super hard to overtake on such a (carpet) track’ the 22-year-old said ‘you need to make a good job in qualifying and that is something I must work on’.  Outside the podium, the Top 6 would finish as they qualified with Hagberg fourth ahead of Yannic Prumper and Dionys Stadler.  Starting 9th, Olly Jefferies would be the biggest mover finishing up his first ETS A-Main appearance in 7th.

sun_sspod

With Jan Ratheisky wrapping up the Pro Stock and Formula wins in A2, the third finals were about deciding who would join the popular German on the podiums.  In the Xray Pro Stock class, reigning champion Marek Cerny took a tone to tone win over Tom Krägefski, and that is how they would line up behind Ratheisky to make it an all Xray podium.  In the Serpent formula class joining the champion on the podium would be Christian Donath, winner of A3 with his Tamiya, and Belgian VBC team driver Olivier Bultynck.

Rheinard takes comfortable A2 win

sun_rhevolcoe

Having had an A1 win snatched off him by Ronald Volker at the end of the final lap last night, Top Qualifier Marc Rheinard claimed a comfortable win in the second A-Main of the Yokomo Euro Tourig Series season opener in the Czech Republic.  Leading from start to finish, a late charge from Volker would reducing Rheinard’s winning margin to half a second, the Tamiya driver was never under real pressure as on Volker and Coelho took turns at rolling.  With the Top 3 breaking clear of the pack,  Volker would as the race entered the second half roll out of the 3-car train promoting Coelho to second.  That position change would only last a lap as Coelho would also roll his Xray handing the place back to the Yokomo driver, causing them to spread out and while Volker would take over a second out of Rheinard’s ending the race with three 12-second laps, the order remained unchanged with Coelho finishing 1.8-seconds back from Volker.

sun_marcA2

‘It started close until they rolled. I would be happy to have a race like this one more time today’, was Rheinard’s reaction to the win which sets the stage for showdown in A3 between two of touring car’s longest standing rivalries.  Suffering ‘one bobble’ which let his pursuers close within striking distance, he said after Volker and then Coelho made their own mistakes he was ‘just cruising’. Having suffered a roll in A1 which he himself said cost him the win, the 4-time World Champion said ‘the last few laps I was just making sure I didn’t roll again’. The former champion, whose winning 2009/2010 season included his last victory of the Hrotovice event, said his ‘car was pretty easy to drive’ and he would leave it unchanged for the deciding race including running the same set of Volante tyres. A3 is set to be the 8th run of the weekend on the same set.

sun_carvol

Having adjusted his tyre prep after suffering a very loose car at the start of A1, Volker said this resulted in an improved BD7 2016.  Describing the rear grip as ‘better than all previous runs’ he continued while ‘still not very easy to drive, it was at least predictable’.  Putting his roll down to catching a corner dot, he said after that all he could do was try to reduce the gap and with second in A2 securing him at least second overall he said it was going to end up ‘not too bad of a weekend’.  Winner of this event during each season in which he has reigned over the ETS, the 12-time ETS race winner said track conditions have been a lot lower than they expected and that was something they needed to work on getting the car suited to for Round 2 in Germany in February.

sun_bruno

‘Quite OK but not perfect’ was how Coelho summed up his A2 performance.  The Portuguese ace said the first few laps were difficult, something he was putting down to the tyres as the cars sat on the grid for a time while the Top 10 drivers were introduced.  After that his T4 ‘was good’ adding hopefully in A3 the race starts quicker.  Asked about his roll, he also said he ‘touched the curbs’.  Starting 4th team-mate Alexander Hagberg found himself 6th after just a few corners.  Last year’s race runner-up, he would managed to get back passed Dionys Stadler but couldn’t do anything about Yannic Prumper, the 2014 podium finisher holding on for fourth by half a second.

sun_jandominating

While the first Season#9 winner of the Volante Modified class will be decided in A3, Jan Ratheisky didn’t want to wait that long backing up last night’s Formula and Pro Stock A1 wins with another in A2 to kick off the 2015/16 season in perfect fashion.  Having also claimed the bonus championship point for being Top Qualifier for both classes, the reigning Formula Champion took an easy A2 win ahead of Christian Donath.  In Pro Stock, the Xray driver would again be put to work hard for the win by his team-mate and reigning champion Marek Cerny.  With no contact this time round, the German held on as Cerny threw his T4 through the chicane on the final dash to the finish.  Doing the double is a repeat of Ratheisky’s, then known as Amser, entry in the ETS record books as being the first and still only driver to win two classes in a single ETS weekend.
