Rivals strive to end Volker/Yokomo reign in ETS#9

fri_trackfish

The Czech Republic is the venue for the start of Season #9 of the Euro Touring Series this weekend (11-13 Dec) with the world’s best drivers descending on the small town of Hrotovice in their quest to win one of the sport’s most coveted titles.  A season in which the World famous championship will celebrate its 50th race, it is again Ronald Volker and Team Yokomo who everyone is out to beat, the successful combination targeting a sixth consecutive title.  Maintaining their long standing sponsorship of the ETS, Yokomo also remain as title sponsors for a sixth season.  The big change for the 2015/16 season is the arrival of Volante as the new tyre supplier for the touring car classes and the change has created an air of anticipation among Yokomo’s rival teams, none more than long running championship runners up Marc Rheinard and his Tamiya team.

Only winning 2 races on his way to his latest title, one of which was at last season’s opener in Hrotovice, Volker again leads the Yokomo assault but even within his own team the German, who has amassed 12 ETS wins, faces strong opposition.  Yannic Prumper enjoyed a win in Italy on his way to fourth in the 2014/15 standings however having been somewhat labelled as the team’s No.2 driver, he and his engineer Toni Rheinard are out to prove otherwise with a World Championship year coming up.  Last season would see former nitro touring car World Champion Meen Vejrak make a break through in top level electric touring car action and become a front runner with a podium finish in Riccone leading his team to extend the ETS programme of the Thai star.

Maintaining the mantle of being the ETS’ most winning driver despite having had to concede the title to Volker for the last 5 seasons, 2009/10 champion Marc Rheinard will again be one of Volker’s greatest opponents. A driver who was very vocal in the past about the influence tyres had on the racing, the 4-times World Champion will be hoping the switch to Volante will allow him to have a straight up race with his arch rival Volker.  With World Champion team-mate Naoto Matsukura withdrawing from Round 1, Tamiya’s other big hope for a successful weekend is Christopher Krapp.   2015 was the German’s first year with the team and as a former race winner he will be kicking off the 6 round championship by adding a second win to his tally.

With Hrotovice marking Bruno Coelho’s first ETS appearance and his first race on carpet, the Portuguese ace qualified only 8th on his debut.  Over the rest of the campaign however he would mark himself out as a real title contender for the new season.  Winning the final two rounds, he would finish third overall with carpet races having been his weakness, but as he comes up to complete his first full season as a professional driver with Xray, expect the recently crowned electric Offroad World Champion to be fighting for the win.  Team-mate Alexander Hagberg is a two time winner on carpet and now having a team-mate of Coelho’s caliber to work with, this should be Xray’s strongest title campaign to date.

Making a vey welcomed return to the ETS in 2015, inaugural champion Jilles Groskamp heads the challenge of the HPI Racing/HB team.  The former World Champion is still in his first year with his new team but having recently become Euro Nitro Series Champion with them, he travels to Round 1 with high hopes.  Another of the team’s new for 2015 signings, joining longtime recruit & former World Champion Andy Moore, Freddy Sudhoff has also showed promises with the PRO5. The German has been on the podium but the win has so far eluded the high rated driver.

Elsewhere Sudhoff’s old team Awesomatix come to Hrotovice armed with their all new A800.  Finishing 5th at last year’s encounter, fast Finn Viljami Kutvonen is the Russian team’s lead charger and has elsewhere shown well with the new car.  Having added Viktor Wilck to its line-up at Round 2 last year, Serpent will be hoping their first full ETS campaign with the Swede will get off to a strong start with team-mate Marc Fischer a former podium finisher at the Mibosport hosted event.

In the Xray Pro Stock class, defending 3-time consecutive champion Marek Cerny heads the entry but Czech driver struggled at his home race last year.  The race would instead be dominated by ARC’s Lars Hoppe setting up a title fight between the two drivers over the rest of the season. Joining the winners roll of honour last season as the only driver to beat Cerny and Hoppe,  Serpent’s Julian Borowski could be one to join the mix for title honours.

In the newly titled Serpent Formula class, reflecting the former class champions becoming a primary sponsor of the new season, Jan Ratheisky is back in search of four in a row.  Champion of the past three seasons, the Xray driver is again the title favourite but as the class continues to grow so to does the level of competition.  With 226 drivers registering championship points in Season #8, 86 drivers are making the trip to the Czech Republic where racers will have to run spec wing sets for the first time.  Continuing to race on a Ride tyre, expect Serpent’s David Erhbar, VBC’s Olivier Bultynck and multiple former Pro Stock Champion Alexander Stocker plus a few others to put pressure on Ratheisky.

5 in a row – Volker claims ‘hardest’ ETS title

sat_volkerchamp

Ronald Volker has claimed his fifth consecutive Euro Touring Series championship title, the Yokomo driver declaring that Season #8 of the world famous championship was ‘definitely the hardest season’ yet.   Coming into the event with only long standing arch rival Marc Rheinard able to deny him the title, Volker said this season the level of world class drivers at each of the six rounds was higher than ever and this was the title he was most proud of.  With the sixth & final round at the Hudy Racing Arena in Slovakia netting Team Xray its first ever 1-2 finish Bruno Coelho taking the win from Alexander Hagberg, Volker said while this weekend was not a good race for him he still got what he came for and he was delighted to win ‘a hard fought fifth title’.

sat_volA2

Finishing 8th at the season finale, his worst finish for four seasons, looking back over the 2014/15 season Volker said he was proud of his pace overall, highlighting that he never qualified outside the Top 2 at the previous five rounds.  The German added while the series has helped him a lot as a driver there is certainly room for improvement for next season pointing out that he ‘sometimes struggled on Sundays’. TQ’ing in both Italy and Luxembourg he would fail to make the podium come finals day. While he enjoyed his best outdoor TQ’ing three of the four asphalt races he said ‘the others definitely caught up this year’ adding that he would have to work even harder in their quest to get a sixth consecutive ETS title. Having joined Yokomo in 2009, he thanked his Japanese team for supporting his five successful ETS campaigns also adding this year was a particularly successful one in terms of the progress made with his long time electrics sponsors LRP.  Acknowledging that Coelho was highly competitive as a newcomer to the ETS he said HB’s Jilles Groskamp, Tamiya’s Akio Sobue and his own team-mate Meen Vejrak brought a new level of competitiveness to the A-Mains each round.

sat_marcbod

Finishing second to Volker for a fifth time, Rheinard said ‘I think I threw it (the title) away when I TQ’d Round 1 but couldn’t turn that into a win’.  Managing to stay ahead of Coelho in the championship, the race winner opting to do A3 to try and deny the four time World Champion the podium he needed in Trencin to hold his runner-up position in the final standings, Rheinard said he is more determined than ever to get the job done despite predicting the level of competition is going to raise to a new high with the likes of Coelho and former team-mate Groskamp set for full campaigns.

sat_brunoo

Finishing his first season of ETS third in the final standings Coelho said it was ‘amazing’ to arrive at the final race fighting for a Top 3 in the ETS.  Claiming his second ETS win in a month in A2, the 22-year-old would start A3 looking to further improve his championship position.  The Top Qualifier would however catch the curbing and roll his T4 onto the grass on the second lap. While he would rejoin the race it would be brief as on the second run down the straight he had a rear tyre explode sending him crashing into the barriers destroying the car.  The World Championship runner-up said while A3 didn’t go to plan he was ‘super happy’ with 3rd overall as he ‘didn’t expect to be fighting for a title podium this year’.

sat_hagberggg2

With ETS Italy race winner Yannic Prumper demoted to fourth by Coelho, Alexander Hagberg would be the highest placed non race winner of the season ending his campaign 5th.  A 2-time race winner, the Swede won A3 to secure second overall saying the Xray 1-2 was a great result to get at their home race and a great way to end the season.  The reigning nitro touring car World Champion said on a personal level while the competition was extremely tough he would have liked to have taken a win.

sat_marek3times

In the Xray Pro stock class reigning champion Marek Cerny would also successfully defend his title.  Having looked to a have thrown away his chances in A1 when he crashed out of the lead with 30-seconds to go and the prospects of rain meaning the cancellation of A3 the Xray driver would come back to win A2.  With daylight still available following the conclusion of the second leg of A-Mains, organisers took the opportunity to run A3 in which Cerny would finish second behind team-mate Jan Ratheisky, a result that was enough to give him his third win of the season and a third consecutive championship.

sat_f1ratheiskyyy

In Formula, Ratheisky capped off his title winning season with a win that would be decided in A3.  Having won A1, Ratheisky went head to head with Top Qualifier & A2 win David Ehrbar, the two making contact on the final lap. While Ratheisky would give position back to the Serpent driver, he would manage a clean pass at the end of the straight to take the leg and his fourth win of the season.

Coelho takes Xray home win at ETS finale

sat_brunoverall

Having joined the Euro Touring Series’ elite list of race winners with victory at the penultimate round of the championship in Luxembourg last month, Bruno Coelho has backed that up with win number 2 of his debut ETS campaign today at the Hudy Racing Arena.  Securing a career first ETS TQ in Slovakia, the Xray driver secured the overall win at his team’s home track with an even more convincing win in A2 ahead of team-mate Alexander Hagberg.

sat_hug1

Happy with his LRP powered T4 in A1, when the winning margin was just 0.257 of a second, Coelho said his car ‘was amazing’ for A2.  Winning by 1.5 seconds, the 22-year-old said his car was like how it was in Q2 when he set a blistering TQ pace adding ‘maybe the improvement was due to a good set of tyres’. Able to drive ‘super safe’ he said he could still open up a gap over Hagberg.  An extra special win for Xray, the Portuguese driver, whose arrival on the electric touring car scene has injected new found interest in the category, said today’s win was big day for all his sponsors.  A relative unknown prior to the World Championships last October where he finished runner-up, it was this performance that catapulted him onto the international scene as Xray signed him up to head their team alongside Hagberg.  Coelho said after a ‘difficult beginning’ to his ETS campaign, him openly admitting nerves at the first few races were an issue, it was great to end the ETS season with two wins.  The only double winner this season along with champion Ronald Volker, he said with his debut season complete the goal next year was firmly set on lifting the overall title.

sat_hagberggg

On target to make it an Xray 1-2, Hagberg felt his T4 was not as good as the opening final. Putting that down to possibly his second set of tyres not being as good as those he ran in A1, he said the car was still good enough with third placed starter Meen Vejrak unable to catch him.  Setting the second fastest lap of the race just 0.062 off Coelho’s best, the Swede said his aim for A3 was to lock up an Xray 1-2, a feat the Slovakian manufacturer has not before achieved.

Coelho takes A1 at ETS Slovakia

sat_coehag

Bruno Coelho took a straight forward tone to tone win in the opening A-Main at the Yokomo Euro Touring Series in Slovakia.  Starting from his first ETS pole position, the Xray driver led home team-mate Alexander Hagberg for what could be a significant result for the team at their home race with the threat of rain making it likely at least one of the two remaining Mains will not be run.  Closest to the Xray duo, who were a class apart throughout the 5-minutes leaving the rest of the field behind, would be Tamiya’s Marc Rheinard. Starting fourth Rheinard inherited 3rd on the opening lap after a mistake from Meen Vejrak and then survived a challenge from Yannic Prumper to hold that position to the finish.

sat_brunoA1

Posting the fastest lap of the race, himself & Hagberg the only drivers to manage 17-second lap times, Coelho said it was a ‘super good race’.  Breaking away when Vejrak’s error delayed the pack on lap 1, the 22-year-old who is looking very strong to back up his maiden ETS victory in Luxembourg to match champion Volker as the only double race winner of the season, described the rest of the race as ‘controlled’.  While Rheinard would close a little, the Portuguese driver said he was always comfortable with the gap over both Hagberg and the German.  Looking to A2, which will end today’s action as heavy rain is expected in Trencin overnight, he said ‘I will just try to repeat what I did in the first one’.

sat_alextq3

Hagberg said it was ‘a nice clean race’.  Describing his T4 as ‘very good’ he said while he closed the gap a little to Coelho he never got close enough to be in a position to make a pass.  Asked if he thought he could mount a stronger challenge in A2 the Swede said he is very happy with how his car is performing and while he could push a little harder he ‘(doesn’t) want to risk (their) postions’.  The third year the Arena has hosted the ETS finale, Xray have never won at the track which is next to their factory and a 1-2 in front of what is a record entry for the World famous championship would then be a dream result.

sat_rhepru

‘Not too bad’ was how Rheinard summed up the race.  The German said he lost touch with the leaders on due to Vejrak. Encouraged by how he closed the gap towards the end, he added ‘it was too late’.  Looking to secure second overall in the championship, a position he has claimed for the last four seasons behind Volker, he said his focus was on finishing third overall today as that would be enough to stay ahead of Hagberg in the points.

sat_tobias

In the Xray Pro Stock class defending champion Marek Cerny threw away possibly the title.  With a mistake from Nico Catelani on the opening lap allowing the Xray of Jan Ratheisky to the front, the German would open the door to allow team-mate Cerny to take the lead.  With Helge Johannessen coming together with Ratheisky, this allowed Schumacher driver Tobias Seidl to hunt down Cerny.  On the last lap the pressure got to the Czech driver as he put his T4 on its side with 30-seconds to go.  A delighted Seidl took the win from Johannes Sperr as Cerny dropped to ninth putting the pressure on himself for A2 if he is to snatch the title from ARC’s Lars Hoppe who failed to make the A-Main after the fourth round of qualifying was cancelled due to weather concerns.  In Formula, Jan Rathiesky took a last night victory from the Serpent of Top Qualifier David Ehrbar with Mike Gosvig completing the Top 3.

Bruno claims home TQ for Xray

sat_brunoface

Bruno Coelho has secured a home TQ for Xray at the final round of the 2014/15 Yokomo Euro Touring Series.  Claiming his first win of the World famous championship at the previous round in Luxembourg, today’s qualifying result at the Hudy Racing Arena is the first time the Portuguese star has taken the honour of being Top Qualifier.  With light rain forcing the cancellation of the fourth scheduled round of qualifying going into the third round Coelho’s Q1 & 2 TQ runs meant he already assured of pole position.  Team-mate Alexander Hagberg however would go on to take Q3 once action resumed on a dry track compounding Xray’s celebrations as the result made for a 1-2 on the grid for the Slovakian manufacturer.  Behind Hagberg, Meen Vejrak had a strong qualifier to post the 2nd fastest time securing the Yokomo driver third on the grid ahead of Marc Rheinard.  For champion elect Ronald Volker he will have to lay claim to his fifth consecutive ETS title from 8th on the grid.

sat_brunobod

‘Super happy’ was Coelho’s reaction to claiming his first TQ. The 22-year-old World Championship runner-up’s first full season of ETS, he said it was nice to achieve this at what is ‘a special race for Xray’.  Commenting on his third qualifier in which he made two mistakes, the 22-year-old said his LRP powered T4 was amazing but he twice got too close to the curbing launching it into a roll each time.  Looking to the final, expected heavier rain over Trencin for Sunday meaning A1 & 2 will run later today, Coelho said the finals ‘will for sure be difficult’.  Potentially able to wrap up his debut season of ETS with a Top 3 in the overall standings he said, ‘For sure I want to win but Alex has found a good set-up and is super fast so it’s not going to be an easy race’.

sat_hagberg2

Surviving a bobble and then somehow missing an out of shape Viktor Wilck, a moment he said led him to ‘almost (have) a heart attack’, Hagberg said his ORCA powered T4 was ‘really good’ allowing him to control the race.  Setting the fastest lap of the round, the nitro touring car World Champion paid compliments to his team-mate saying the arrival of Coelho into the team has been hugely beneficial.  With a lot more information to share by having Bruno onboard he said his input has been very useful for the development of the T4 which he said they have improved a lot  on asphalt.  Asked about the final, Hagberg said he would just follow Coelho at the start and see what happens.

sat_meen

Claiming his best ETS qualifying result with 3rd on the grid, Vejrak was very happy wtith his final qualifier. Claiming his first ETS podium at Round 3 in Italy this season, the Thai ace said while his Scorpion powered Yokomo was good in Q3, helped by having new tyres, he needs to find more steering if he is to be able to race for position in the finals.  Having set the pace in practice, team-mate & ETS Round 3 winner Yannic Prumper will start 6th.  Starting from his worst grid position of the season, 8th, Volker said with his Q1 DNF and the cancellation of Q4 he knew he had to just finish his third qualifier.  He said he had mixed emotions as while he came here to win the championship, a goal he will complete, he would like to be capping off the season battle with a third race win of the season.  Still not happy with his spare car, his race car destroyed in the high speed off in Q1, he said they will make a big change for A1 adding he has little to lose but if it’s good he can hopefully make up places.

sat_rheinard

Another driver who needed to put in a clean run or risk not making the A-Main, Rheinard said ‘I took no risks and just cruised around’.  With this approach netting him the third fastest time, the Tamiya driver will start from 4th on the grid.  Aware that his second overall in the championship standings is under threat due to the two Xray’s starting up front, last year’s winner said he would just push for the best result he could adding calculating the various point scenarios wasn’t going to change the outcome of the race.

sat_viktor

Surviving a spin to finish the round 7th fastest behind Schumacher’s Michal Orlowski, that was enough to secure 5th on the grid for Serpent’s Viktor Wilck.  With a DNF in Q2 meaning he needed a good run to make the A-Main he said his S411 was ‘not so good’ as he struggled with ‘maximum push’.  He said considering this, starting 5th was ‘still ok’ adding if he gets ‘lucky with tyres’ for the finals he is confident he can fight with Rheinard and Vejrak while ‘Bruno & Alex pull away at the front’.

sat_catelanicar

In the Xray Pro stock class Nico Catelani claimed his first ETS TQ, the Yokomo driver topping the times for a second time in the third qualifer.  Behind the Italian, Xray’s Jan Ratheisky will start second followed by reigning champion Marek Cerny.  For championship leader Lars Hoppe, the cancellation of Q4 means the ARC driver will start in the B-Final meaning he can only watch to see if Cerny does enough to be able to snatch a third consecutive title.

Xray 1-2 as Coelho repeats in Q2

fri_coelhotq2

Bruno Coelho headed an Xray 1-2 in the second round of qualifying at the sixth & final round of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series in Slovakia. As darkness started to fall on the Hudy Racing Arena, Coelho backed up his Q1 topping performance with a super fast TQ time ahead of team-mate Alexander Hagberg.  While Coelho had a clear advantage in the cooler night conditions over his rivals behind him little separated the next three drivers with Yannic Prumper completing the Top 3 behind Hagberg with Marc Fischer only 1/10th further back. For title challenger Marc Rheinard and reigning champion Ronald Volker the qualifier would see both drivers lack pace to set the 5th and 6th fastest times respectively.

fri_brunotq2

‘Super good, I have never had a car as good as it was today’, that was Coelho’s reaction to his second run, which Volker was one of the first to declare is a time that will be impossible to beat in tomorrow’s remaining two qualifiers.  Having ‘super steering and super grip’, the winner of the previous ETS encounter, the biggest challenge of the qualifier was visibility but added ‘luckily my colour scheme is good for such conditions’.  The third time the Hudy Racing Arena, home to the Xray factory, has hosted the ETS there was plenty of celebration in the Xray pits with Coelho moving close to giving them a first home TQ.

fri_alexander

Hagberg said he was ‘Glad the car was OK after the hard Q1 crash’.  The Swede drove conservatively at the start as he struggled with the darkness but as his eyes adjusted to the conditions he said he was able to push harder.  ‘Surprised’ by Volker and Rheinard’s lack of pace he said he was looking forward to tomorrow knowing that he has a good base to work from adding he would push more in Q3.

fri_prumpercar

Making a mistake in the same spot where he rolled his Yokomo in Q1 only this time he managed to save it from going over, Prumper said driving condition were very difficult.  Running a number of different parts on his BD7 compared to Volker, he said the dark and high traction was challenging.  The 21-year-old said having been able to run the same pace as Coelho in warm daytime conditions, in the cold he can’t match the Portuguese driver.

fri_fischerq2

‘Very good but I messed it up myself’, was how Fischer summed up his run to the fourth fastest time.  The Serpent driver, having lost half a second off his practice pace in the first qualifier when he put on his first set of race tyres, said switching to his second set for Q2 transformed his S411.  Describing it as a ‘different car’ in Q2, the German said on hearing he was running second to Coelho but not knowing the gap ‘pushed way too hard’ to try and catch him but this caused the car to understeer and soon he was losing places. Having ‘relaxed after 3-minutes’ he said he ended the qualifying driving good again. For team-mate Viktor Wilck who was second in Q1, his second attempt would end up on the grass as he clipped the curbing with the Swede then opting to pull off.

fri_marcq2

Declaring his title hopes are over, Rheinard said ‘(I) just wasn’t fast enough’.  The winner of this event 12-months ago, the Tamiya lead driver said their car was better in the daytime and they knew the late qualifier was going to be difficult having lost pace in yesterday’s final practice when the temperatures dropped.  Third in Q1, TRF team-mate Akio Sobue would set the 7th fastest time with Christopher Krapp again 9th.

fri_volcarq2

Sensing a fifth consecutive title could be his at the end of Q3 tomorrow, Volker had to run his spare car in Q2.  Having destroyed his main car after a high speed off on the straight in the opening qualifier he said the second car, while decent in practice, was a little out of balance and he wasn’t confident with it.  Planning to do a complete set-up change for tomorrow he said hopefully they can try to improve and get a decent grid position.

fri_nico

In the Xray Pro Stock class emerging talent Nico Catelani TQ’d the second qualifier ahead of reigning champion Marek Cerny while Q1 pace setter Jan Ratheisky was only 5th fastest.  It was another troubled round for championship leader Lars Hoppe, the ARC needing to pull off a good Day 2 as he sits 31st overnight in the qualification rankings.  In Formula, Serpent’s David Ehrbar had the perfect day TQ’ing both qualifiers with already crowned champion Ratheisky getting a P2 in the Q2.

Coelho TQs opening qualifier in Slovakia

fri_brunodriv

Bruno Coelho has TQ’d the opening round of qualifying at the season finale of the Yokomo Euro Touring Series in Slovakia.  The Xray driver topped the times at the Hudy Racing Arena from Serpent’s Viktor Wilck as a number of drivers suffered heavy damage following offs.  Reigning champion Ronald Volker destroyed his Yokomo when it made contact with the barriers after flying off the track at the Arena main straight left hand kink.  Alexander Hagberg would suffer similiar faith.  The only driver who can deny Volker a fifth consecutive ETS title, Marc Rheinard would also crash out of the qualifying after a mistake over the curbing in the infield launched his Tamiya into a catch wall resulting in a broken wheel.  With Rheinard a DNF, it was Akio Sobue who would be the top Tamiya with the Japanese star completing the Top 3.

fri_coelho4

Opening the qualifier with his fastest lap, being one of only 4 drivers to do a 17-second lap, Coelho said his T4 was super fast at the beginning of the race.  Seeing both Volker and Rheinard crash out and then a mistake from practice pace setter Yannic Prumper, the Luxembourg winner said he switched to a ‘super smooth’ driving style so as to avoid any mistakes.  In the end the approach paid dividends as he took the round by 3/10ths from Wilck.  Very happy with how his car ran the 5-minutes he said for Q2, despite it taking place in much cooler conditions due to it being the closing run of the day, he would ‘just check it over’ and leave it unchanged.  Asked about his crash, team-mate Hagberg said he was just driving his ‘normal line and the car spun out without warning’. The Swede, who was holding P2 at the time, said his ‘tyres were ok’ and the only thing he can think of for causing the off is that he caught some air under the car.

fri_viktor

Wilck, while pleased to open with a P2 was also slightly frustrated by a loss of power towards the end of the run. The Swede said his Speed Passion motor had been a little hot in practice but going from 4 to 5-minute runs for qualifying the extra minute was enough to push it over the limit.  Describing his S411 as very easy to drive in anticipation of cooler Q2 conditions he said he will make a small set-up change for the night time run.

fri_akioback

Star of Round 4 of the ETS at Mattsee in Austria, Sobue was pleased with his TRF419 in Q1.  Running in the second fastest heat the Japanese driver said while he had ‘a clean run’ there was time to come from the driver.  Another driver contemplating a set-up change for the drop in track temperature for the second qualifier, he said in addition to the car changes he would drive the round more aggressively. Team-mate Christopher Krapp would post the 9th fastest time.  The German said going up in the rear diff oil instead of curing his oversteer made it even worse. Set to go back on the diff setting he will also switch to the same shock towers and shock set-up as Sobue.  Running 3.0mm thick towers on his TRF419, he will switch to the 3.5mm Sobue ran and reportedly make the car feel more direct to drive due to the extra stiffness.

fri_meenmachine

With Volker’s sudden exit from the track, it was Meen Vejrak who would be the fastest Yokomo for the round finishing 4th ahead of team-mate Loic Jasmin.  Describing it as a good start to qualifying, the Riccione podium finisher said his car was OK but pushed more than he would like.  The 2012 nitro touring car World Champion also reported a lack of ‘punch’ from his electrics and the Thai driver will change the settings for the next one.  ‘Suprised’ was Jasmin’s reaction to his P5 time.  The multiple French National Champion and Luxembourg A-Finalist said his BD7 felt both slow and strange to drive, something he put down to the hot weather at the time of the qualifier.  Admitting he didn’t drive the 5-minutes very well he said there is time to be gained there and he would also make a set-up change.

fri_hudy

A driver who probably knows this track better than anyone else, Xray designer Martin Hudy completed the Top 6.  With the office where he designed the T4 overlooking the track, he said the result was ‘better than expected’.  With his ‘car very good’, he said after a ‘super good start’ his driving would cost him some time.  Getting caught by Sobue, he started to overdrive allowing the Tamiya to pass him.  Once following Sobue however he said his driving improved again.  For Q2 he said he knows the car is good and he just needs to concentrate on his own driving rather than the other drivers on the track.

fri_yannic

Top seed for qualifying, Yannic Prumper said ‘I messed it up on my own’.  Setting the fastest lap of Q1 with a 17.816 lap time, the ETS Italy winner rolled over his BD7 on lap 6 costing himself over 2-seconds.  The Yokomo driver would also run the last three laps without any turbo, overheating suspected to have caused this issue losing him another second in time.  Giving his take on his off, team-mate Volker said he did nothing different to the lap before and he could only put the crash down to the car catching air.  He said ‘I had the fastest car on the main straight but probably it’s too fast and this led it to lose down force’. The German said one positive of the crash was that it happened in the first 30-seconds of the run and not towards the end so the tyres are still good.

fri_freddy

HB’s Freddy Sudhoff would lead the HB challenge in Q1 with Andy Moore going with him in the Top 10.  Setting the 8th fastest time ahead of Krapp, the German said his PRO5 was surprisingly good and he could have managed a Top 4 if it was not for a mistake over the curbing which cost him over 2-seconds.  He said the car was maybe too easy to drive and as a result he didn’t give it his full attention leading a lapse in focus and the mistake.  He said a change in direction with the set-up after practice was a big step forward and he was happy he now had a good base set-up to work from. Moore would also fall fowl of the curbing.  The British driver said his Hobbywing powered PRO5 ran well for the first minute but the set-up is burning up the front tyres and his pace then drops off so he has no choice but to make changes for the next one.

In the first round of qualifying for the Xray Pro Stock class title contenders Lars Hoppe and Marek Cerny both had issues.  While Formula Champion Jan Ratheisky would top the times from Nico Catelani,  championship points leader Hoppe would finish only 19th fastest while Cerny would break.  Hoppe said his ARC was not as good as in practice with the only change being a new set of tyres for qualifying.  Making a mistake on the opening lap he said after this his driving was also not very good.  For Q2 he will switch from a Blitz LSF to a GSF in the hope of improving the car.  Defending champion Cerny put his error down to his tyre prep.  Planning to be more ‘careful’ preparing his tyres for Q2 the Czech driver said he will also start off with a safer opening lap after which he is confident he will be able to push.

Prumper tops practice at ETS finale

fri_prumper

Yannic Prumper topped practice at the Yokomo Euro Touring Series season finale at the Hudy Racing Arena in Slovakia.  The Yokomo driver was fastest over 3-consecutive laps from team-mate Ronald Volker.  The only driver in with a chance of denying Volker & Yokomo their fifth consecutive ETS title, Marc Rheinard completed the Top 3 just ahead of former team-mate Viktor Wilck, the pair having claimed a TRF 1-2 at the event last year.

Having topped free practice, Prumper backed that up by again topping timed practice and the 21-year-old will now lead away the top heat in qualifying later today.  A fan of the 320 metre long track, the ETS Italy race winner described his Much More powered BD7 as ‘difficult to drive but fast’.  Commenting that over the second half of the run he is able to run at between one & two tenths a lap faster than his rivals for the opening qualifier, two rounds scheduled for today, the German will run the car unchanged.

Describing his practice pace as ‘good so far’, Volker said ‘the Top 5 is all very close and it’s all about the tiny things in determining who will top the opening qualifier.’  Winner when the championship first visited the famed facility in 2013, the German added because of how close everyone is it’s going to be ‘hard to check out’. Although a fan of the layout he knows it is not an easy track and there is always the chance of having bobbles and this is going to be key to the opening qualifier.  Asked about his car he replied that they will make a slight set-up change as they try to improve the LRP powered BD7’s overall balance.

‘Everything pretty close’ that was how Rheinard summed up practice adding ‘no one is standing out as being faster’.  Having just made little changes between practice rounds, the multiple World Champion will keep his Much More powered TRF419 the same for Q1 and ‘just drive careful’. Last year’s Top Qualifier and race winner, he said the high grip on the curbing can easily cause crashes and he said qualifying will be determined by the driver who makes the least mistakes.

Fourth fastest, Wilck said his Serpent has been pretty good all day although for the final practice he had an issue with a vibration after changing to a new set of tyres.  Feeling he could have run a faster 3-lap pace without the imbalanced tyres, the Swede said while Prumper is a little faster after that everyone is really close.  Pleased with his Speed Passion powered S411 he said other than fit a new set of tyres he would leave the set-up unchanged for the opening qualifier.  Team-mate Marc Fischer would complete the Top 10 in timed practice.  Having ran between 4th & 7th fastest in the free practice rounds, the German said his car was ok until the final practice when while feeling good to drive it just suddenly didn’t want to turn in.

The nearest thing to a home race due to their cars being manufactured just metre away from the track, Xray’s Bruno Coelho and Alexander Hagberg posted the 5th & 6th fastest times respectively.  Registering his first ETS win at the previous round in Luxembourg, Coelho said his car was really good but the problem was all the mistakes he made.  Setting the fastest lap, with only Prumper also managing a 17-second lap, he said a little more steering would be nice but he will leave his LRP powered T4 unchanged for Q1 and instead ‘drive a little more safe’ than he did in practice.  Hagberg said ‘things are ok’ adding he is ‘not super fast but consistent’.  Describing his ORCA powered T4 as ‘easy to drive but lacking a little corner speed’ he said ‘3-laps are not the best indication’ of everyone’s pace and he is confident over 5-minutes he will be strong due to his consistency.  The Swede added that on new tyres it is particularly easy to flip on the curbing and he predicts a lot of drivers to make mistakes in Q1.

fri_krapp

Seventh fastest Christopher Krapp felt he has ‘pretty solid pace’ going into the qualifying.  The factory Tamiya driver said while he would like to find another tenth of a second in outright pace he feels over 5-minutes his Orion powered TRF419 feels really good.  ‘Maybe a little too easy to drive’, something he said is maybe not such a bad thing as a lot of drivers made mistakes in the practice rounds, he will go to a heavier rear diff oil for Q1 which he said should bring more steering.

fri_jilles

HB’s Jilles Groskamp would put in the 8th fastest time, the HB driver’s event not getting off to the best of starts.  Binding issues with his radio yesterday meant he lost two rounds of practice.  Switching from his Sanwa Exzes-Z to a borrowed older Exzes-X, the Dutch ace has overcome the issue but said he is still playing catch up to his rivals after the loss of the valuable track time.  Compared to Luxembourg, where he had race winning pace, the HB/HPI Racing driver said his PRO5 feels like it has something wrong with it with understeer being an issue.  3/10ths off on outright pace he believes he will be a lot closer when qualifying starts and it’s 5-minutes that count and not 3-consecutives laps.
